Nature's Gold Paperback – June 1, 2012

4.0 out of 5 stars 15 ratings

This poetry collection is poetry to enjoy. Some poems will bring a tear to your eye and some will make you smile. One or two are a bit darker. It is a celebration of the beauty of the world and also a reflection on human life.

This is a lovely collection of short well constructed poems covering a variety of themes: betrayal, satire, humour, domestic abuse, getting old, and first love to name but a few. From the betrayal of a wife as she notices the smell of perfume on here husbands shirt to the hard-hitting satire on fox hunting, the author treats her topics with a gentle yet poignant tone.

Amid the joy and sadness of these poems, there are several varied reflections of life, such as being flattered at the hairdressers, but remembering not to give away too many secrets, and then on a more serious note the injustice of how different the lives of children can be depending where they are born, and back again to a more humorous tone, exploring the joys of being a grandparent (though I won’t spoil the ending to that one). I particularly enjoyed some of the more uplifting poems too, such as one about a young man finally getting the opportunity to flee the nest and the birth of a new baby. The author also makes good use of contrast and comparison within each poem when appropriate, especially so in Blue Planet and The Demise of the Country Fox.

Stylistically these are more of a prose style than the traditional rhyming verse, though the author does combine the two most effectively I would say. Most of the poems here tell a story, but again there are several more abstract verses that allow the reader’s thoughts to wander, reflect, and interpret according to their own memories and experience. A delightful collection I shall no doubt be rereading from time to time…

Here we have a selection of verse that is drawn from careful, everyday observation. The topics covered are as diverse as love, loss, birth, death, humour and routine situations. A sprinkling of natural history thrown into the mix creates a diverse collection which will appeal to many readers.
Although I have moved away from writing poetry to concentrate on short stories and novels, I can still appreciate the beauty and simplicity of a good verse. I’ve written several hundred poems and I tend towards rhyming verse as opposed to free verse, but within this collection there are some fine examples of both rhyming and free verse.
Whether new to reading poetry or someone who enjoys a short story in a contracted format, this is a good taste of what is available.
My three personal favourite pieces here are: ‘The Night Fire’, ‘Feeding Time’, and ‘Water Colour’.

A lovely selection of poetry from behind the eyes and from the mind of author Penny Luker. I am always at a loss when I try to relate what I have seen or heard but Luker has the gift to project her thoughts through words that ignite the imagination and conjures up vivid imagery.

The format is great and at the end of some poems Penny Luker gives us the provenance of some of her work - a lovely gesture to share with the readers.

Interesting and varied collection of poems going from beautiful nature to some in a bit darker genre. The author has put together an intriguing collection.

This is a delightful collection of poetry from someone who is able to write with her emotions as well as with her mind. Without a doubt, Penny shows that she has an excellent handle on the technicalities of poetry in many forms, but I enjoyed this selection mostly because they took me to places I may not otherwise have gone. Some of the poems are deeply emotional (Undeniable Love), others are light and easy going (Sneaky), a few bring a chuckle or two (Don’t Buy Me Apples). All of the poems are engaging, and it is clear they have been written from the heart with a profound sense of perception.

Like its companion volume "Autumn's Gold" - this is another most impressive eclectic anthology. Clearly Penny Luker is a very talented lady.
