Negative Zero: Soldier of Light Chronicles Book 1 (A Paranormal Urban Fantasy Novel) Kindle Edition
If you thought death was the end...you’d be dead wrong.
Life was barely manageable after my mom was murdered three years ago. I wasn’t sure what my purpose was anymore. But then on my twenty-first birthday, I drank a little too much and fell from the roof of my nine-story apartment building.
I died. Then... I un-died.
Enter Hayden, my really bossy (and hot) guardian angel whose duty is to train me to be the next “Soldier of Light.”
Sound fun? Well, it’s not. I save dead people, helping them move on to the World of Light. And to make matters even worse, they are all troubled souls stuck in the Dark Realm with the devil and his army of demonic creatures. They roam my city’s streets at night, waiting for me to screw up.
The Afterlife is one of Death’s best kept secrets, and I’m living proof. I’m pretty sure I’m the wrong person for this job, despite what Hayden thinks. Guess I’m stuck saving the dead.
“Paranormal elements, action, drama, friendship, struggles, mystery, life and death, romance….all put together nicely, and driven by a strong female MC.”
“Could NOT put this book down. An absolute must-read for fans paranormal romance.”
Negative Zero is the enthralling first installment in The Soldier of Light Chronicles. YA/NA paranormal romance with a strong female lead. A book full of intensity, supernatural adventure, and unexpected twists that will keep you guessing throughout the series.
Perfect for fans of Twilight, Hush Hush, and Fallen Angel Romances.

About the author

Ireland Gill is now a best-selling author, and has spent well over a decade preparing the story line for her first Urban Fantasy series: Soldier of Light Chronicles. It was originally created back around 2001 with intent to be a graphic comic book, but instead turned into a full length novel....and just kept growing. Having experienced the sudden loss of her father as a child, Ireland's fascination with the idea of the afterlife grew along with her imagination throughout her adulthood, which further inspired memorable characters whose stories had to be told.
Having been diagnosed with MS on Friday the 13th of September, 2013, Ireland decided she would no longer sit on already-written story. Eleven months later, "Negative Zero" (self-published) is not only the first book of her book series, but also her debut novel which hit Amazon as of August, 2014. The second book, Absolute Zero, was published just one year later. (the rest of the series is on its way! But a REBOOT of the series was necessary. New covers and new blurbs have been created, and the first reboot published in July, 2019.
Both Negative Zero and Absolute Zero were accepted by Library Journal into their curated system and their Self-e Selection. Ireland has since been named a Self-e Ambassador for Library Journal and Biblioboard. She has been a featured author on panels at a few events, including Indie Author Day 2016.
Ireland is a happily-married early bird and nightowl whose further inspiration comes from her husband, three daughters, and lots and lots of music - particularly the band RED. In her free time, she does acrylic painting and plays piano, but especially loves finding new hiking trails with her family.
Oh, and one more thing - she adores llamas, alpacas and gargoyles.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 12, 2015The overall topic of this series is intriguing and very well written. The characters are dynamic coupled with a unique storyline! The first four chapters of the book were VERY hard for me to listen to. We meet Evika who is very much alone and lonely on her 21st birthday. She struggles with depression and sorrow from the murder of her mom three years prior and her only person, her best friend, has recently moved to another country for school leaving her with nobody to be with on her supposedly special day. Evika was a hot mess of emotions, with grief, despair, angst and a complete lack of regard for her own well being. She was on a one way track to her own demise- which I guess is what happened, but it was a much better life she had once she died (ironic!) Keep in mind the story is still very dark, dealing with evil spirits and ghosts and such (including a description of a terrible child sexual assault), but it was much easier to deal with (for me, the reader).
Evika was an incredibly reactive character, acting on impulses with no thought. Even after her traumatic event in the book she was still so dangerously impulsive, which made me want to shake her! Every time something happened she did not like or could not process, she would literally run away, like a petulant child. She had a lot on her plate and some strong dark emotions so I will cut her a break and hope that she can mature as a character in the next book in the series. She was hard to relate to with her self-destructive behavior and attitude, I saw that she was experiencing pain but I still wanted her to make better choices and learn to cope since she had ZERO coping skills. Hayden aka the guardian angel was a great character, real yet ambivalent and so freaking patient!
My favorite part of the book was the world building and I feel like this book is just touching on the tip of this dark, interesting and incredibly unique supernatural read. These are not your mother's angels, instead they are moody, drink bear and drive a harley (but they are still very attractive!) I loved that while this was an angel book, it took a different origin for the angels and there was no real religious overtone which I loved about the story. I can't wait to see which direction the story and world will take next.
Overall this story was something very different from anything I have read before and I look forward to more of the world unfolding as well as a forbidden love connection finally happening (I hope!!). The audiobook narrator gave Evika personality and depth, really portraying her feels so that I experienced them too. I recommend this to anyone who loves angel stories, angst and heartbreak as well as a scary new kind of supernatural.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2016It is hard to believe that 'Negative Zero' is Ireland Gill's debut novel, as it was so accomplished. On reading her author bio, I discovered that she had spent a decade creating her fantasy world, and her level of dedication really shows. She really does transport the reader to the afterlife with captivating writing, allowing you to see things from the character's perspective. Her descriptions are so clear and vivid, and her characters are so 'real', with complex emotions and eternal struggles.
There is darkness and there is light, just as there is good as there is evil, which our strong female lead Evika, must get to grips with in the afterlife, if she is to fulfil her role as Soldier of Light. But, as she learns about her task of saving troubled souls, she also learns secrets from her past, and that things are rarely what they seem. Will Evika thrive or will she be torn apart by all the things she though she knew.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2020I really enjoyed reading this story, and had I not been a stickler for grammar and the like, this book would have been higher up on my star-ratings. As it is, this book was still good enough to get me to pick up the second one. The worldbuilding and story is impressive, there is immense potential for this series!!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 27, 2016From the synopsis, she had me. Negative Zero by author Ireland Gill, the book could turn the pages for you. You will be hooked. Well written, developed and delivered. Evika has died on earth, yet as her mortal life passed into the afterlife, one ending is another’s life beginning. Evika meets her guardian angel Hayden in the afterlife, and what Hayden reveals to her, will even have the Devil himself, clamoring to stop her. Get this YA storyline and strap in; heaven meets hell in an attempt to save souls for eternity.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2020I tried really hard to try and get into the story because I liked the idea from the summary, but I just couldn't get past 20%. Part of it was that the MC is so needy and whiney. The other was that it feels like a rambling monologue with too little or too much detail depending on the moment.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2019I watched the book trailer and I thought to myself.. “I must get my hands on this book!” The story intrigued me from the beginning till the end. Evika struggles daily. I followed Evika throughout her journey in the story and at times I thought she was a little selfish but I feel like that feeling is part of her journey...Of her discovering her TRUE self. Luka is my fave character. He just seems like we could be best friends. I hope to see more of him in the future.
Audio:
I felt like the narrator, Elizabeth Anderson did a fabulous job portraying Evika. I felt like she was Evika. Her voice was perfect. She portrayed the male characters well too. Five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... sense Negative Zero is a novel that focuses on good and evil
In a simple sense Negative Zero is a novel that focuses on good and evil. But, instead of focusing on the very black and white nature of the concepts, it goes into the shades of grey that exist between the two. Not only does this come through in the brilliant fantasy plot, it is also evident in her characters – the 'good' characters still have their flaws and their demons, and the 'evil' characters sometimes seem to have justification. It is safe to say that Ireland Gill has created a YA novel that is so different to all the others I have read before, because she has taken a 3-Dimensional approach to her plot lines and characters.
I loved the afterlife setting of the novel, and the idea that when you die on Earth, you may have another life to live elsewhere. Definitely a novel that I would recommend to all fantasy fiction lovers, adult or teenager.

3.0 out of 5 stars IT'S OK
I thought this book was okay, but it was a very slow start and had me wondering when it was going to get to a more exciting part of the story. Unfortunately, it took nearly to the end before that happened. I persevered though and managed to get to the end. I found the main character's relationship with her guardian annoying and the tension between them became tiresome. It didn't inspire me to purchase subsequent books in the series. Sorry. Not for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great YA book, great new series
Young Adults particularly will enjoy the 'beyond death' mixed with judgement, penance, wrath and redemption. Should a soul be punished, or even forgiven ?
The audio book track is also really great listening.
