The Good Neighbor: A psychological thriller with a shocking twist Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 2,913 ratings

Sometimes the past just won’t stay buried.

When 14 year old Brittany disappears one night, her parents are devastated, certain she has been taken.

They can’t bear to think about who has done this and what might be happening to their precious girl.

Even worse, the police seem to see them as suspects, implying that they may have had a part in their own daughter’s disappearance. Only their neighbor, Taylor, is a rock. She organizes search parties, feeds the volunteers, works night and day to help them find Brittany.

But as this affluent California community becomes focused on the hunt for the missing girl, it slowly becomes clear that her disappearance is linked to terrible secrets from the past.

Secrets that must be kept hidden at all costs….

The Good Neighbor is a gripping psychological thriller that twists and turns as it races towards its nerve-shredding climax. Perfect for fans of K. L. Slater, Teresa Driscoll and Mark Edwards.

Since I discovered this author, I've read nothing else. I'm glad she's written a lot of books! This one had all the ingredients I appreciate in Cathryn Grant's work: easy pacing, true depiction of human nature, characters that take on a life of their own, unique theme set in suburbia where things that look "normal "never are.
I'm not sure what the "shocking twist" was supposed to be in the story. I don't think it needed one. I like the way the story unfolded; I like how each character revealed him or herself. I also like the way this author's stand alone novels end in just the right place.
If you like this author, this book will not disappoint.

Four stars for keeping me glued to my Kindle, three stars for an unsatisfactory ending. Everything about the new neighbours seems normal, but the daughter, the only child, seems far too young for her age. Then the unthinkable happens. The story unfolds, and the reader realises that things are not what they seem like on the surface. The next-door neighbour tries in her way to be helpful and supportive during a tense time. Eventually it all unravels and ends in a triple murder. And this is where I kept thinking, "If I had written this book, I would have changed the ending." A few things are inexplicable: how a child could be stolen, and for 10 years the bereaved mother seemed to have done nothing (or not much) about it. Then, the murders are a little overly dramatic and out of character, at least for some of the people involved. And maybe the most unbelievable bit is the attitude of the daughter. Instead of being traumatized out of her mind, she seems to accept what happens ... I'd have thought she needed a few years of trauma counselling. Read it and decide for yourself. It's nonetheless a gripping tale!

A teenage girl is missing. Did she run away or was she kidnapped? There’s a neighbor who is determined to get at the truth, but this family has a lot of secrets. The book is pretty good, but definitely not a “can’t put it down” page turner.

I have read several of Cathryn Grant books, I thoroughly enjoy her twists and find that the endings are quite clever. I don’t even come close to guessing the ending of her books and this book was quite the ride! I was sucked in from the first chapter. I stayed up late reading this book. I have read several of the authors books back to back and have followed her devoted to reading her other books as I have enjoyed reading her other psychological thrillers. Her characters suck you in, you are cheering on the individuals and are caught off guard by the twists. It is so refreshing to not predict the end of the story. All the twists kept, me reading late each night and I didn’t want to put down my iPad until exhaustion made me! The twisted relationships the author describes in detail so that you easily connect with each character. A great escape during the pandemic!

Though this is the first book I've read by this author, I will certainly be reading more. I felt like I was on the edge of my seat through the whole book. Especially the twist close to the end and the ending scene of the book. I was like holy crap, deep breath. Read this in one day, quite the thrill ride. If you are looking around for a good physiologic thriller, this is a great choice. Highly recommended.

this has a very slow build, to the shocking conclusion! Although it starts slowly, you will hang on every word. This is very addictive! A mom, simply checking on her sleeping 14-year-old daughter. However, at this time, everything goes horribly wrong! This is just the beginning. How far will she go to keep her secrets? You will not believe how this ends! someone lost, leads to someone found. Trust me, this is not going to be what you expect. secrets from the past began to surface. As each secret comes to light, worlds are slowly being torn apart!

I stayed with a four for this book because I really liked it for about 75%. It had a good hook and lots of possible scenarios to what had happened to 14 year old Brittany seemingly abducted from the new neighbors' house during the night. The descriptions were good and it felt like the neighborhood was real. To me, though, the book couldn't rate a 5 because of the way it all played out. It just seemed way too outlandish for it to end that way after the way the rest of the book had been.

New neighbors move into a tight community in California. Although the daughter, Brittany, is 14 years old, she is still being treated as if she were 7. Her old bed and other non-teen things still adorn her bedroom, she is home-schooled, not allowed to have friends outside of the home-school group, and only can go online with a parent present. Brittany ends up missing - she is all her mother has in her life. Taylor, a neighbor, sets up a FaceBook page to help find Brittany. The police are facing roadblocks with the investigation - particularly when they mention to the mother, that the case looks like a runaway.

Meanwhile, the FaceBook page Taylor is hosting for Brittany has people coming out of the woodwork and not to forget - a few threats...

    A NOT TO MISS read!

Many Thanks to Inkubator books and NetGalley for a superb read!

Amazing story! I love when author's head up each chapter with the character's name. It makes it so much easier to follow the narrative. I was hooked from the first page. Sadly, there really are parents who micro-manage their kids and have a twisted idea of what good parenting is, as in Moira's case. The injections to keep Brittany from growing up, totally creepy. There were lots of twists and turns and my feelings about each of the characters changed as time went on. As for Taylor, I changed my mind about her at least 3 times. Her choice at the end was brilliant, a perfect twist. I wanted the story to continue. I could picture Brittany outing her at some point later on. It was a fantastic read. Ten stars!!

This was a very gripping read! I loved it. There was a very claustrophobic feel to the 'ordinary' suburban street, and I was pulled in to the story straight away. The characters are intriguing and I kept changing my mind about them - but never in a million years would I have guessed what was really going on!

I also loved the writing style, which managed to be engaging and witty while at the same time building tension and creating a real sense of unease.

    A real page-turner!

I loved every moment of this book. Nothing is what it seems in this neighbourhood. While the residents seem nice on the surface, there is something slightly off about the way they live. The description of the street with the garden in the middle is fabulous - despite this community feel, the houses have tall gates and courtyards in front of them, essentially shutting them off from the world. The unsettling feeling I had when I started reading this book grew as I read on, until I reached the end and was horrified by the reveal. Five stars.
