If you're looking for a fast paced medical thriller then this is the one for you. With this thriller a pharmaceutical company is in play. Insider trading that leads to murder and death all to cover up a strategic plot that masterfully created by Author Rose Edmunds. The characters are developed to perfection in what I think is an enthralling book that had me up until the wee hours of the morning. This is my first Rose Edmund book and I think I will have to try out her suspense series next.

(Spoilers included) I got this book for free - which is great! I've come across some great books and authors that way. This one for me was actually hard to follow. Who was calling who, who worked in which company, and how did they fit into this big acquisition. And then it made it more confusing that some of the conversations were with "the bad guy" and we didn't know who that was yet, so there were no names referenced in the conversations so it was even harder to follow. Maybe if each character had more of an introduction it wouldn't have been so hard for me to follow. I kept going with the book, I thought the theory was interesting that the big pharmaceutical companies were hiding a cure for cancer because then they wouldn't make money on their drugs and treatment. The writing was fine, but sometimes European authors need to remember that Americans may not know what their abbreviations mean. I believe one of the characters had a parent that was a GP. I'm not exactly sure what this is. And just to be nitpicky, I don't like the cover. (Update 6/11/15 - they changed the cover! its much better) Best wishes to Rose Edmunds, and I applaud you for following your dream of becoming a writer. Let me know when the next book is - and I'll give it a try.

I do enjoy a conspiracy story and this book didn’t fail to deliver. Ms Edmunds strong knowledge of the finance world is evident in the storyline and the portrayal of the characters. The two main characters were easy to visualise and relate to, though I must admit to disliking Hugo Fleming for being a twat however, his naivety and ignorance did work well with the plot.

I have some understanding about insider trading but learnt a lot from reading the story and the added twist with the pharmaceutical dealings was well researched and plotted. If you like delving into the world of finance, dirty dealings and intrigue at every turn, this is a must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling, informative mystery, with lovable protagonists

This is a conspiracy theory thriller with a difference. When an elderly research scientist threatens to expose the fact that a pharmaceutical company suppressed a cure for cancer years ago, all manner of skeletons start rattling in cupboards all over the world. The key protagonists are sexy sassy and decidedly feisty young journalist Claudia Knight (let’s hope we see more of her in future novels) and posh boy handsome Hugo, who has faults aplenty, but is essentially lovable, hopeless in some ways, but underneath his inadequate exterior is someone who is decent, resourceful, kind and has integrity. This unlikely pair, working both alone and together, begin to unravel the mystery, that spreads in all kinds of unexpected directions, in London, New York and Brazil.

I don’t know much about big business, hedge funds, takeover bids and so on, but Ms Edmonds obviously does, and she introduces facets of high stakes business arrangements and dirty deals with pizzazz and style. So that takeover bids, venture capital and ‘due diligence’ research and other such things are explained in a no nonsense, unobtrusive interesting way, so that you’re never ever bored and always informed with crystal clarity. Be ready for a dark devious plot with lots of twists and surprises, several murders and a attractive hero and heroine who plunge into and out of many difficult scrapes.

Going into more details might spoil the story, so it’s easiest just to say that if you enjoy cleverly crafted conspiracy mystery thrillers, with lots of thrills and surprises, this is for you. The protagonists are attractive, flawed in many ways, but unlike in some thrillers, you care about them and you really want them to succeed. It’s an easy read, accessible and thoroughly enjoyable. I hear that Ms Edmonds’s is writing a second novel and I cannot wait to read it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Slick, polished thriller.

I was pretty impressed with this; the plot is very well put together, with few of the traits so often to be found in a debut novel. I was interested in the subject matter anyway, ie, a conspiracy to prevent the widespread knowledge about a cure for cancer, much of which I am sure goes on. It was obvious that Ms Edmunds is well versed in the ways of the high-flying financial world, too. The whole story was very convincing.

A clever plot is nothing without great characters, of course, and although I found some of them a little one dimensional, one of the two main characters, Hugo, a reluctant and atypical city boy, was marvellously portrayed, and carried the whole book, making it more than just a thriller. He was very likeable and I found myself pleased when I got to more 'Hugo bits'.

If you like stories with plenty going on and no superfluous detail, especially those about the world of high finance, I'd say this should be right up your street. Well done, Ms Edmunds!

    5.0 out of 5 stars A first-rate corporate thriller
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 16, 2014

This is a conspiracy theory thriller, set in the world of big business and corporate finance. I used to inhabit this world myself so I found the book very easy to relate to and it is clear that the author also knows a thing or two about this world.

The central thread concerns the supposed suppression of a new wonder cancer drug by a pharmaceutical company who may have much to lose if the new drug is allowed to surface. The plot moves along swiftly and it soon becomes clear that there are many players involved, each with different, and often competing, agendas. The twists and turns which ensue are enough to keep any avid thriller reader engaged, even if they don't have the keen interest in business and finance which I do. The principal characters (of which there are quite a few) are richly drawn and it doesn't take long to relate to each of them separately - some in a positive and some in a negative way. As the mystery unfolds, it's not easy to spot who are the true villains and I certainly didn't predict the ending.

The book is very well-written, with near-perfect grammar, spelling, punctuation, and phrasing throughout (unlike - sadly - many other recently-published books).

It's a damned good yarn. I enjoyed it probably more than any other book I have read this year. Highly recommended. I can't wait for Rose Edmunds' next book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read and recommend it to lovers of fast paced thrillers.
The complex plot is intriguing with plenty of twists and turns. The action is based around the suppression of research to ensure a successful take over by a pharmaceutical company. With the involvement of insider trading and hedge fund companies there's pressure for it all to go smoothly whatever it takes, including murder. I was very impressed with how the author kept on top of the different players while still keeping up a smooth, fast pace.
The reason I love this book however is the characters and the interaction between them. There's a full cast of interesting and wonderfully flawed characters from the frustratingly naïve and spoilt, the feisty and headstrong to the cold and calculating manipulators. Each character, including the minor ones is portrayed consistently.
    Great read.

4.0 out of 5 stars A writer to watch!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 3, 2013
I thoroughly enjoyed this fast-moving, well-written debut crime thriller, set with humour and surefooted lightness of touch in the working worlds of hedge funds, corporate finance and pharmaceutical giants.
The book's greatest pleasure for me was the duo of flawed but endearing heroes: Claudia, a young black journalist determined never to apologise, and Hugo, a hapless financial analyst out of control of his love-life and credit cards. Attracted to each other but unable to co-exist without rowing, they are drawn into investigating a series of unexplained deaths and soon feel the danger themselves.
A book I couldn't put down, and a writer to watch!
