- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2021Nicolas, Marquess of Pennington, suffered the loss of the woman he loved several years ago, He vows never to fall in love again. Returning from the war, he must take over the title after the death of his father and brother. His promise to a dying friend to become the guardian of his children after his death, is an added responsibility. The oldest daughter must have a season to find a husband, but Carrie stills wants her freedom, unless she can find a man to love and be kind to her siblings. When danger threatens Carrie and her siblings, Nicholas realizes how much he needs Carrie and his biggest mistake would be denying his love. A very charming romance, a very sweet and giving hero and a perfect match for Carrie.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 31, 2021I've read book 1 in the series almost a year ago. This is a stand alone story even though book 2. Yes, you have cross over character's, but you will not be lost.
I liked the beginning, then the story dragged for me. Nothing earth shattering happens until over 1/2 way. So we have a lot of dialogue with no suspense or action. You get to know the h/H and the h's siblings, which added to the story.
There is a villain that is no secret, who does cause some trouble and it did seem realistic how it went down. The h is loving and kind, almost 21 and has been responsible for her siblings for a year since her father died. The H was best friends with the 3's father, who happened to be a professor the H had. He is 32 so he wasn't the age of their father. I had no problem with the age difference because the h was mature. The H becomes the guardian of the 2 youngest and is trying to give the h her Season.
The H fights his feelings way to long. Tragedy happened to someone he loved and he vowed not to love again or ever marry. But, the h slowly breaks the ice around his heart. They romance builds slowly which was nice.
Lovemaking within marriage, heat level 2.5 out of 5 and described briefly.
There are some suspenseful moments and I felt a connection to the couple. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, romance and a tad of spice. There is an epilogue but no glimpse of the future. (ljb)

Having made a promise to his friend and mentor, Nicholas was now guardian to his three children. Well one was not exactly a child. No, Carrie was about to make her come out as a debutante. Bella and Jeremy were the two younger.
Nicholas thought Carrie was lovely but was glad to have his sister assist with her come out! But Carrie has no with to marry without love and she is pretty stubborn can I say?
A charming story of love found when least expected with a little danger and adventure!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 2, 2022The story starts with a description of the heroine as a force of nature. Kind, capable, beautiful, yet oblivious to her allure. However, the moment she arrives at Elm Park, she demonstrates none of the expected qualities. In fact, she comes off as a teenager rather than a 21-year-old woman.
The hero also started out as an interesting character. Loyal, dependable but something of a recluse and prematurely grouchy. But then he becomes bland and brooding. In fact, both of them spent so much time brooding in their heads, it was excruciating. I started skimming after the halfway point.
There is as little in the way of romance. Not even a slightly steamy end-of-book wedding night scene could infuse real romance into the story.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 28, 2021Nice story to read, a little spicy in the end but a nice story. The story of Carrie and Nicholas is an interest story that show their love for the beginning, but because Carrie and her siblings were his wards it took hIm a long time to show her how much he loved her. It is a nice story but as I said a little steamy in the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2021I absolutely loved this book! Nicholas really stepped as guardians to these kids. However, carrie and Nicholas were destined to be together. By the time he discovered his feelings for Carrie, he found his life so much better with his 2 wards. Truly a HEA!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2021Maggi has perfected the art of the Regency novella! As usual, this did not disappoint - engaging characters, a suspense plot line to spice things up, and a romance you are rooting for. These books might be small, but they deliver a big dose of happiness!

3.0 out of 5 stars disappointing
This book started well, but then it got really slow. I had to flick through many pages. It got exciting at one point, and then it got really slow again, so I had to flick most of the pages to get to the epilogue at the the end. This book would be suitable for someone who likes a long slow Story the characters were nice , but the story was too long without enough excitement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nicholas’s world is turned on its head following a promise to a friend
Max was Nicholas’s tutor at university and then a good friend. So when he asks Nicholas to agree to be guardian to his three children should the need arise Nicholas agrees.
Some time later following Max’s death Nicholas takes all three of the children into his home. However, the eldest girl is almost 21 and ready for her presentation at court. At first Carrie’s reactions are somewhat hostile but gradually they realise that they each have genuine feelings for each other.
Danger presents itself on the return of Max’s younger brother who had feld to the continent years earlier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reluctant guardian, danger and romance.
Nicholas, Marquess of Pennington returns to England from the Napoleonic war. After a tragedy, before he joined the army, he never intends to marry. He will lead a quiet life managing his estate and writing history books. He is unsuited to family life but this changes when his friend, Max. dies, appointing him as guardian to his young daughter, Arabella and his son, Jeremy, who attends Eton. As though that is not enough to disrupt Nicholas’s life, he promises Max to ensure his daughter, Carrie, has a London season and marries a suitable gentleman. Devoted to her siblings, Carrie will not marry a man, who will refuse permission for her siblings to live with them, if she can wrench them from Nicholas’s custody.
When Nicholas first met Carrie, “if had expected a will-o-the-wisp clasping a volume of poetry to her chest he couldn’t have been more wrong. Beneath her dark eyebrows she was making a critical study of him.”
Before Max died, he warned Nicholas about his brother Simon, a criminal who might try murder Jeremy to gain the boys title and inheritance.
Nicholas takes Max’s warning about his brother, Simon, a criminal forced to flee from England. He fears Simon will try to murder Jeremy to inherit the boy’s title and fortune.
Never Dance with a Marquess is a satisfying romance, with conflict, humour, misunderstandings, and danger.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful continuation to the series
This is a wonderfully crafted second book that continues this great series. There is a bit of a thriller about this story which gets a little steam at the end. All of the characters are amazingly portrayed, in this very captivating story.
