Never Let You Go: (inspired by "Hansel and Gretel") (A Modern Fairytale Book 2) Kindle Edition
From New York Times and USA Today Bestselling Author Katy Regnery comes a beloved collection of breathtaking romances based on the world's most well-known fairytales!
** NEVER LET YOU GO (Hansel & Gretel) **Regret, betrayal, kidnapping, loss, madness, abuse, passion, love.
In this modern retelling of "Hansel and Gretel," thirteen-year-old foster children Griselda and Holden escape from their abductor after three years of brutal captivity, and try to cross the Shenandoah River on foot. Tragically, one of them makes it to safety, but the other is left behind.
Ten years later, Griselda's boyfriend drags her to a fight club grudge match, and her world is turned upside down when she watches Holden step into the ring. Though the connection between them is fierce, bitter regret, simmering rage, and a tangle of physical and emotional scars lie between them, just as dangerous as the white water of the Shenandoah.
Never Let You Go is a story of fear and hope, defeat and survival, and two people--once profoundly broken--who discover that love is the only thing that can make them whole again.

From the Author
This book is a bit of a departure for me. It's dark. Not midnight black dark, but there is some serious darkness in this book. There is also...
Regret.
Betrayal.
Abduction.
Loss.
Madness.
Abuse.
Passion.
Reformation.
Forgiveness...
and True Love. ♥
This book is part of the same series of standalone modern fairytales that includes The Vixen and the Vet, and like The Vixen and the Vet (which dealt with the real-life issues of war, IED injuries and the treatment of returning veterans) this story will be a good deal edgier than my Heart of Montana or Blueberry Lane books.
However - of course, as always - I guarantee a happy ending.
I hope you enjoy Holden and Griselda's story.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2017Format: KindleVerified Purchase4.5 stars -- OK, I adore this author, so much so that I flew across the country to meet her this past weekend at an author signing, hence why I was trying to read her books beforehand. But as yet that love had only been concentrated on her Blueberry Lane series. I hadn't been enthralled by the previous two Modern Fairytale stories I'd read of hers, despite the rave reviews -- which bummed me out big time. But in all honesty, when I initially bought these ebooks a few years ago, this is the story that grabbed my attention the most. I'm not sure if it's the tragedy of it all, the horror of a kidnapping, or just the uniqueness of doing a spin on the Hansel and Gretel fairytale (which you have to admit, does NOT get retold very often), but I was drawn to this story. So to say that I was relieved that I fell in love with it is kind of an understatement. I know it's probably silly to put so much thought and angst into loving every story by an author, b/c even with my all time favourite authors I haven't loved EVERY story, but I really loved the concept of contemporary fairytale retellings, so I *WANTED* to love these stories. AND FINALLY I found my match!!
So after that long winded introduction, what did I fall in love with? Oh it's all Holden and Griselda. From the many flashbacks, both good memories and nightmares, to the truly long and arduous journey to their HEA. I'm not a huge fan of HIGH angst, and I wouldn't say this is HIGH, but it is higher... But there was just something about their obvious connection and love for each other that kept drawing me back in over and over again, cringing every time they hit a setback, and praying that their HEA was just around the corner.
I even understood all of their emotional turmoil, like Gris's inability to trust the people she loves not to leave her, and her attempts to isolate herself. And Holden sort of isolated himself as well, but in a bit of a different way. In all honesty, they both behaved badly at times to those around them, but I forgave them for it because of all they went through. And they both grew and changed and made really good choices in the end.
And come on, Holden was extremely swoonworthy. I can't even tell you how many times he made me rip my heart out and offer it to him on a silver platter. He was that intriguing mix of sexy aggressive protective boy with this wounded puppy who just wants to be loved, his devotion to Gris was just unmatched. And I felt like his stammer added something to his character and their experiences.
I loved the emotions that this book wrung out of me. The desperation, the grief, the despair, the way they would latch on to each other. OMG, I was just totally all in. And I loved that we got periods of bliss throughout, so that it wasn't all hardship over and over again. We really got to see their relationship change and grow depending on what was going on in their lives. I even loved the few sideplot loose ends that got tied up, that was an unexpected bonus.
So yeah, not my best review...that's what happens when I read a book on holidays. Not only do I have less time to read, so it takes me a few days to get through a book, but then I also find it hard to pin down my thoughts to more specifics, instead of just "I LOVED IT!" I did find that the book dragged in places, but because of not being able to devote time to the book, I wasn't sure if that was actually the case or more the circumstances of my reading. Ah well, you get what you get and you don't get upset. H+G Forever baby.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2015Format: KindleVerified PurchaseOh my, what an UBER emotional ride.. While the previous Fairytale of "Beauty and the Beast" was sweet and heartfelt, this one of "Hansel and Gretel" was heart breaking and angsty. It had a total different feel / vibe to it. I have to say, though I DO enjoy angsty novels, this one was stretching it a bit for me. I mean, I still really enjoyed it - I ached for both MC, waiting for them to FINALLY get what the SO deserved and yet, there were times were I thought that it's taking too long. I"m spoiled like that.. I"m not used to singular novels containing more than 400 pages. Mostly I don't see the NEED for such a long ride, maybe in a PNR and especially in a series when there is more back stories / sub plots and world building.
Okay, so let's talk about the novel already. Holder and Griselda are our modern day "Hansel and Gretel", Griselda has been living in foster care for most of her life and Holder is the new addition to the house she is living in now. They form a quiet connection on the first night he arrives so when she volunteers to walk to buy sandwiches for the whole family while on vocation he asks to join her. They meet with Caleb Foster on their way who convinces Griselda to take them back to the camp where they are staying, while Holder doesn't believe Caleb he rather stay with Griselda than leave her behind.
That's where their journey begin. Caleb turns out to be a very sick man, he sees in the 10 years olds his "lost" siblings - Seth and Ruth - who died long ago in a fire. Caleb is a very religious man, so after catching Seth and Ruth in a sexual act he is determined to separate them and make them repent. He calls Ruth a seductress and prays and begs for Seth to see the truth of it. Well, that was then, and yet now, he doesn't see Holder and Griselda, he sees Ruth and Seth and so he tries to make THEM repent. He doesn't allow them to touch each other at all, or even to hold a gaze, neither to talk when he is around. They sleep separately closed in a underground cellar, they are chained during the day while they work in the garden and they are beaten regularly for their "bad" behavior. It's as horrible as you read, even worse.
The short connection they form before they were caught by Caleb only grows stronger with Caleb's constant abuse, and so after 3 years of struggle which keeps escalating they realize it won't be long before he kills them. Eventually Griselda comes with a plan for them to escape yet Caleb surprises them and so she succeeds while Holder is (re-)captured by Caleb. Griselda runs for help and yet when the police finally arrive Caleb and Holder are LONG gone.
10 years later, Griselda is a broken young women, struggling to survive and mostly trying to save enough money to be able to hire a respectable investigative company to look for Holder. Holder is barely even trying to survive. First thing Caleb does is convince Holder he shot Griselda when she tried to escape, Holder believes him and yet even though Caleb becomes more "reasonable" from that point (the temptress being gone..) he also doesn't care anymore, Caleb seems the least evil or just the known evil and so he stays with him unwillingly and then in a way willingly until his demise.
A chance meeting brings everything back. They stand in front of one another and my stomach was clenching with the tension and my emotions were all over the place. OMG what a scene! It's actually two scenes in which I could barely breath. It was Epic.
They have a LONG way to go before they can actually BE with one another, first they need to trust in one another, then they have quite a lot of s***ty situations to deal with that keeps getting more and more complicated I was out of breath. I can understand why everything needed to happen, or at least why it was significant, but at a certain point, I was totally tired with the whole sub plot of Gema (Holder's ex). Though I have to say I didn't guess how it will end! (I liked it more than the things I had in mind..)
I DID like that both of them had a lot of growing up to do, and realizing that though they mean the WORLD to one another they both need to be able to live WITHOUT each other, even for a short while, to see that there is more to life than their other half. Yeah the past 10 years they were apart, but in a way, they were still together back there in Caleb's cellar, chained and working in the garden, or whispering hushed promises for a future the present doesn't seem to enable.
The whole story is told from both their POVs alternating also with memories from their time together with Caleb. It was disturbing, heart breaking and then loving and tender in the present when they attempt building their relationship.
The book truly tears you apart and puts you back together. The journey these two go through, alone and together, was breath-taking. I loved them together. Even though it WAS a bit sticky at times, it's a "fairytale love" so it makes sense, not to mention that after going through SUCH an ordeal together, life, emotions, aren't what we the "ordinary" people are experiencing.. and yet I can't say I truly liked Griselda. She was strong, she dealt with things her way and she was thrown in many horrible situations that she tired her best to survive. The only way she could in her mind.. She did mistakes, she tried and yet she was holding herself back - all that I certainly got. What annoyed me was how childish she could be at times. She couldn't trust Holder (?!) and HE surely NEVER let her down. She was constantly struggling to believe how serious he is about her and she was making it VERY difficult for him to manage the s***ty situations HE had to deal with. Not to mention near the end she expects something from him and she is bummed about it, and angry with him for not doing it. She was a TOTAL baby about it.
I did really enjoy this book and I DO recommend it! I just had my struggles at times with Griselda and I would have preferred the book to be a tad shorter.

5.0 out of 5 stars „All hope abandon, ye who enter here“ (Dante Alighieri, The Divine Comedy)
Format: KindleVerified Purchase"Never Let You Go” 's path to paradise begins in hell!
For me “Hansel and Gretel” have always been one of the darkest and most terrifying fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, but Katy Regnery's adaptation teaches us fear - as Stephen King could not have written it better.
About the story:
Griselda's natural, childlike wariness of strangers is untermined by the foster care program, which requires from childen to entrust themselves to the "care" of utterly stranger “mothers” and “fathers”. That's why Griselda commits a fatal mistake based on a misunderstanding - for which she will torment herself all her life. Abducted at the age of 10y, Griselda and her foster brother Holden endure the unimaginable. They help each other through years of torture, terror, and agony. In order to escape certain death, they try to flee. But the Shenandoah River becomes their Acheron. Who of the two enters the realm of the dead that day? Whose soul lives in eternal damnation?
Katy Regnery leads us into hell. A hell that is swept into the souls of the two lost children by the floods of the Shenandoah River, and poisones their lives, drownes their spirits. < Spoiler > Until, in a fairytale-like way, they find each other again, and the love - which carried them through years of imprisonment - leads them back to life, because "You came back from the dead and brought me back from the dead with you."
And this love is so great, so endless that as soon as "he lined up his heart over hers" we readers melt away (sigh)!
What an overwhelming, amazing, and excellently written love story, which let its characters "go to the ends of the earth for you ... to make you feel my love".
A wonderful fairy tale about “second chances, finding what you want and losing what you love”. In evil as in good - 5 stars!

5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must-read!!!
Format: KindleVerified Purchase“She loved him like the tide loves the sand – trapped together, one lost without the other, pushed and pulled, but never ripped apart.”
What a beautiful, emotive and well-written novel!
Holden and Griselda are foster children and are abducted during an outing with their foster family. Caleb Foster is not quite right in the head and thinks they are his sinful twin brother and sister. They spend three years in captivity, mistreated and beaten, until, one day, they make an escape bid, running through the cornfield and across the Shenandoah River. However, only one of them makes it across safely.
Ten years later, Griselda is dragged to a bare-knuckle fight and her world tilts off its axis, again.
Holden and Griselda are fantastically drawn characters. Both survivors, they are alive but not really living. When they are reunited, the love they had for one another as children burns into something brighter, deeper, and intensely sexual. The belief and devotion they had for one another left me breathless. Holden is absolutely all in from the moment he realises that she’s truly alive. He wants to be a better man and live a better life for Griselda. Griselda, having lived all her adult life with a barrier between herself and the rest of world, is beyond thankful and happy to find Holden again, but their situation is not without complications. Living with guilt of having survived without Holden, she also has to learn to accept that people can love her unconditionally and truly.
So much happens in this novel – it really kept me on edge, and it really keeps you wondering if they’ll ever get their happy ending. Holden’s unwavering love for Griselda was a real anchor for me. There were so many heart-wrenching and beautifully-written passages – SO MUCH FEELING!!!
This book is an absolute must-read (especially if you’re a fan of Mia Sheridan).

5.0 out of 5 stars Omg.
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseI don't know what to say. I was glued to this story from start to finish. I cried and laughed, hurt and cringed with H & G. I loved every moment. I wanted to scream at H to run faster and jump with G but he just didn't have the strength. I cried. And everything he went through with CF omg. I still feel like he should have killed him. So happy when they found each other.
Freaked when S&R where found at her school. Like omg.
OK enough, I could keep going because I really loved it. I live the ending and I was very sad to see it end. I cried so much at the end and I would love to read it again.
Thank you Katy for such a awesome story.
Hugs Carrie

5.0 out of 5 stars Took me some time
Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThe story was heartbreaking at times. Also the trauma that they experienced and the impact was nicely captured.
It got a bit heavy here and now but happy to see how everything came together at the end.

Format: KindleVerified PurchaseA story that is poignantly heart wrenching at times and other moments pure delight filled with the wonder of love. There are challenging scenes in this novel and with it the reality. But Regnery also lets us see the marvellous strength of love. Amazing story.
