The New Next One (Bethesda Barracudas Hockey Book 2) Kindle Edition
How much are you willing to give up for the man you love?
Best friends Nick Johnson and Tyler Jensen have the world by the tail. The eighteen-year-old stars of their school’s hockey team are looking forward to playing in college and hoping for careers with the pros.
Nick and Tyler know a lot about each other, but there are a few important details they haven’t discussed. To start with, neither man knows the other is gay. Making things interesting, Nick has a massive crush on Tyler, something he’s kept to himself for a long time. And although he’s never said a word about it, Tyler has wanted to date Nick since they met.
On a cold Minnesota night after a big win, Tyler finds the courage to confess his feelings to Nick. When Nick admits the attraction is mutual, their relationship turns on a dime. They skate around the challenges of a secret romance in an all-male boarding school, but what will happen when the stakes rise dramatically in a sport not known for being gay-friendly? Will Nick and Tyler make the easy choice or the hard one?
The New Next One is a prequel to the authors' book Nice Catching You. The New Next One is a new adult, friends-to-lovers romance featuring young athletes, plenty of steam, first times, coming-of-age angst, and a HFN ending. Besides learning the background for Nice Catching You, you will meet the main characters for the authors' book Fire in the Ice.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 20, 2024I really loved this awesome story of young first love between Nick Johnson and Tyler Jensen.
It has heart and some steam and some emotions as well. And as the saying goes, you never forget your first love.
This wonderful story has an HFN
- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2024I feel I should have read this book before I read "Nice Catching You" because it got me so turned around. But I do have to say that I feel this book was better written than "Nice Catching You" because of the wording. No "honey's" were uttered but that could be because Jacob didn't actually talk to Nick in this book!
- Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2024This might sound like a cliche` , But OMG thinking about Separate Ways by Journey
Truly pulls this whole thing together for me. Nick and Tyler are the friends that need each other for years in highschool. Then they learn totally different things about each other. There stories and history goes from there. ..
Separate ways 😔😭
Then grab the next new book.
Fire in the Ice
- Reviewed in the United States on April 4, 2024This book should be the first one in the series since the story predates the story in book 1. These stories are fine, short romances, but lack depth in both the characters and plot.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 28, 2023Nick and Tyler
Okay, so I did not pay attention that this book was a prequel to book one and an introduction to book three. I had to stop reading and go back to the blurb. Loved all the guys. Excited to read book three.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2022I read Nice Catching You (Barracudas book 1) first but I wish that I would have read this one first. Written in first person POV, all from Nick’s POV. Good amount of M/M sexy times (both guys are 18). This book does not have a HEA or even a HFN. It doesn’t have a cliffhanger but the expectation is that you’ll go read (or have read) Nick’s book and then Tyler’s book.
My issue is that this author likes the “epilogue dump” - like an information dump, he uses the epilogue to relay a bunch of information instead of letting the MC experience it. It was worse in book 1 but it comes across as an abrupt, unfinished ending.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 13, 2021This is a sweet prequel to Nice Catching You. Nick and Tyler are best friends and teammates. It's their last year of school before going off to college together. Nick has been secretly crushing on Tyler for years, but one night after a hockey game Tyler reveals he has been crushing on Nick too. Having to keep their relationship a secret can be tough, especially as the end of the year approaches and one of them is given an unexpected opportunity. I was nervous to read this since I had already read about Nick's HEA, but it was sweet reading about his first love. It also helped prepare for the heartache since I knew it was coming. But the heart won't hurt too long, Tyler's HEA is coming soon. I can't wait to read all about it!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2021I sure do love a hockey romance. This story of Nick and Taylor, the first I've read from these authors, was a good read. A few 🔥 scenes and some fade to black. If you're in the mood for a sweet college love story, give this a try.

update July 2002:
Just finished listening to the audiobook that just came out. Nick J. Russo did a wonderful job as he did with the other books in the series. It was sweet to hear tgis story narrated and relive how it all begun for these characters and the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written
We met Nick Johnson in Nice Catching You, where he gets his HEA with Jacob. This is a prequel to that book. When Nick is in college, waiting for his call up to the NHL.
Tyler Jensen has been friends with Nick for a while and unbeknown to each other, they both have feelings, but are scared to do anything. Once they step over the threshold, they have to keep their relationship a secret.
Kevin Moore also features in this book, as he is a friend of Nick and Tyler. Kev will have his own story.
Even though there is no HEA for either main character together, they do get their separate happy ever after with other people. This is about first love, and how they navigate a new relationship.
This is the second book in Ryan Taylor and Joshua Harwood’s Bethesda Barracudas series. This is another re-read for me.
Ryan and Josh are just favourites of mine, I will read anything they write. Their knowledge of Ice Hockey is excellent, you can tell they are massive fans of the sport.
“You're the sexiest man I ever knew. You're absolutely gorgeous, but more than anything, it’s you-your personality, who you are”.

5.0 out of 5 stars So Good
I loved this book.
Going into it you need to realise it’s a prequel to Another of the authors books called The New Next One.
Although these 2 don’t walk off into the sunset together it’s still a lovely story, the ending fit perfectly.
It’s a short story but packed with heart & heat.
I love all the books Ryan & Josh have written and this one was no different.
Highly recommend it
