• Part 3 walks through two detailed examples

- Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2015I have now read almost all of Robin Whaley's books over the past month, especially those books on Nik software. I have read other guides to software, but none compare to the clarity of these. He provides the essential details about how and when to use the software as well as an understanding of the principles and concepts that guide the use of the software. He employs ample examples show step-by-step how to achieve the most from the software. His writing style is straightforward, concise, and easy to read (without the cute attempts at humor found in other books). I have learned much from him. Now I am reading them again to engrain his lessons into my habits. I hope he will continue to produce such guides.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2015I have been using Nik's Dfine for some time now, and have not realised the full potential of this wonderful programme.
Therefore, I have a debt of gratitude to Robin for this simple, concise and very clear book.
The explanations of each step, control are clear and are sections that I can, and will, review, from time to time
- Reviewed in the United States on September 30, 2013A great comprehensive review of Dfine 2 with good screen shots of the tools and examples of their effect. This is complemented by clear and concise worked examples at the end of the book.
After reading the book I was immediately able to make an obvious difference in noise reduction on several of my own images.
Be sure to get Robin's Siver Efex and Viveza books as well.
Thanks Robin!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2014Nicely written but a bit short on content for the price.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2013I had no idea that Define 2 could reduce noise this refined, improving images so well as to mask what type of camera made them. Thanks Robin for explaining your hard earned process with everyone with this software plugin. I always had problems when reducing noise. The details would disappear, looking more like those from a banded 8bit jpg than a 16bit Tiff. Your example images are truly amazing!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2017The author of this e-book clearly understands Nik Dfine software, but the book is so full of grammatical errors that there are times one may struggle to determine what point he is trying to make. Also, many of the screenshots he uses to illustrate a point are difficult to see, even when zoomed to full screen. Not recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 12, 2014The author provides some excellent advice for eliminating noise at the time of capture. This book really shines when Whalley takes you under the hood of NIK Define2 and provides a no-nonsense approach to getting the most out of the plug-in with example images provided. And does it in a concise and easy to follow manner.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2013This is a great resource for those looking to get more out of NIK software. It is clearly laid out and explained. It also delivers great results. After reading this book, I understood the elements of Dfine 2 enough to really improve my photos.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!. I was hesitant at first
Brilliant!. I was hesitant at first, did I need another book on photography, well I am very pleased with my purchase this has raised my knowledge to another level, I did purchase the software that was recommended in this book, I can do everything in Lightroom but the Nic software does do a better job at removing noise and it does do it faster, but I will still strive to create my images without noise. I was able to go through my old images and rescue about 30% by completely removing the noise from them. I feel confident that images I take jjin the future that have any noise in them, I will be able to remove it with the knowledge learnt from this book. Am very pleased with my purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid instruction manual if a little dated now
Dfine is a clever program that needs some understanding to get the best out of it. While more modern software(DxO Prime, Topaz etc) do a better job for global noise reduction Dfine with its Nik control point selections and the ability to tell the software the sample points still has a role to play, especially if you already use other features of the Nik collection. It's not a tool you need to use on every image but when you do it's good to know you are getting the best from it.
In this book Robin Whalley goes through the basic operation then describes each control and option and concludes with some sample images(which you can download from his web site).

5.0 out of 5 stars Robin Whalley's books are comprehensive guides at low cost.
I have a number of Robin Whalley's books and this one like the others is well written and easy to understand. The author never makes the mistake of assumed knowledge of the reader and takes everything step by step in a clear and concise way. I take a lot of architectural photos and indoors, particularly in church's were the light is usually poor, noise can be a big problem so I found this book very welcome.

3.0 out of 5 stars but may provide a useful refresher. It was easy to read and understand
Very helpful guide, if your goal is about improving your knowledge and understanding this book can help. It will be less helpful to those with a greater depth of knowledge and understanding on the subject matter of the book, but may provide a useful refresher. It was easy to read and understand, well set out without being too complicated.
