Nine Ladies: A Pride and Prejudice Variation Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 855 ratings

How can Darcy and Elizabeth overcome 200 years of differences in this era-spanning love story?

The Darcy family has grudgingly kept the secret about the power contained within a nearby stone circle called Nine Ladies. Fitzwilliam Darcy is forced to contend with this secret when a young woman from the future appears at Pemberley. Until the opinionated stranger can return to when she belongs, Darcy is responsible not only for her safety, but also for ensuring that nothing she does threatens Pemberley’s well-being.

Elizabeth Bennet has returned to England to take care of her estranged father, and her life was off track long before she walked into that stone circle at sunset. She quickly discovers that, as a poor and single woman, she’ll have to rely on the arrogant Mr. Darcy. She tries her best to survive in the nineteenth-century until she can return home but, as she and Darcy grow closer, the truth she knows about his and Pemberley’s bleak future becomes harder to keep.

Will their love prove timeless as centuries and cultures collide in this time travel Pride and Prejudice variation?

I highly recommend this story to any reader who wants to have their share of a romantic time-travel adventure with Mr. Darcy!" 5 out of 5 stars - Meredith Esparza, Austenesque Reviews

"Nine Ladies is an epic adventure that readers will hardly forget. It is not the typical time travel story, and you will understand why once you've read it, but it is certainly one of the most compelling books of the genre I have read." - 4.5/5 Rita Deodato From Pemberley to Milton

An Austenesque Reviews Favorite Read of 2021! "(The) execution of this romantic time travel adventure was brilliant."

What would happen if a modern Lizzy were transported back to Regency England? Personally, I never asked myself that question - and did not know I needed the answer - until I read this wonderful novel. Heather Moll understands Darcy and Elizabeth so well that her novels are an automatic read for me. So, if like me, time travel/sci fi is not your thing but a well written Darcy and Elizabeth is, I highly recommend this book. I could not put it down! I did not see how she would work out the HEA, though I knew she would. I appreciated the twists and turns along the way. And I found the ending very satisfying!

I really enjoyed this book. I tend to enjoy the trope, but this one is done unusually well. Elizabeth was more of a feminist than usual, which caused some issues, but Darcy was extremely well done. I liked how they developed Georgiana and Mrs. Reynolds stories. I really enjoyed the romance development between Darcy and Elizabeth in this story. You were drawn in and invested. Darcy's reactions to modern times was authentic and understandable while also being character deepening and endearing. I liked the way the couple was able to piece together information about various events using tech and old newspapers. Also the concept of leaving things for the future and finding ways to ensure things played out properly was highly interesting. Well done!

I loved this story so much! The romance between Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy is well done. They start out wary of each other. Darcy is reluctant to engage with her at all, fearful that her presence will cause the truth about Nine Ladies to get out and wreak havoc on his life, reputation, and estate. But over time, because he is one of only four people who know the truth and only one of two she has the ability to talk to regularly, they get to know each other, and to care for each other.

One the things I love best about this novel is how the effects of time travel are handled. I haven’t seen or read every time travel book or movie out there, but in the ones I have, the characters so often seem to shrug off the differences in culture, mores, manners, and technology, aside from a brief comment or question when confronted with something new or different that’s usually played for a joke—then they’re off doing their adventure. And I guess that’s okay since those stories are about something else usually. But in this story, those things are given the weight they would likely really have. It’s no joke to have everything you believe and understand about how people should act and treat each other be completely different. Or to have technology that is so vastly different from what you’re used to in ways that affect the decisions you make. As a modern, 21st century woman, Elizabeth is understandably dismayed by how women are expected to behave and the lack of respect they are granted in 1811. She’s even more horrified by what passes as medical care. These become real roadblocks to the emerging relationship between her and Mr. Darcy, and Moll doesn’t shy away from letting those things be the roadblocks that they would realistically be. I like this because it is a real conflict that can’t be easily brushed aside or solved with one conversation. I honestly wasn’t sure how things were going to resolve into a HEA.

And that’s another thing that was great about this book. There were some plot points that I was able to guess at, but the ultimate resolution of the story? I did not see that coming until it was made clear. I had a solution in mind, but I was wrong. And interestingly, Moll has the characters address the solution I had come up with and dismiss it.

But this is, above all, a romance, and it succeeds extremely well at that, too. I really wanted Elizabeth and Darcy to find a way to be together, and not just because they are Elizabeth Bennet and Mr. Darcy of Pride and Prejudice, but because of this Elizabeth and Darcy, because of this relationship that they built together and the experiences they shared.

I really think that anyone who loves a good romance story would enjoy this book—you don’t need to be either a time travel fan or a Pride and Prejudice fan.

I pulled an all-nighter to finish this book! It was that wonderful. Totally worthy of a physical hate copy purchase. I am prancing about the house today because I read a REALLY good book last night/this morning.
I am not one to write a full story recap. But let me say that I was extremely skeptical about the time travel story. The star reviews don’t lie- it was so good. I am also not one to pick apart a story if the story has pulled me in. This story definitely grabbed me. The author could have gone in so many different directions but her choice was perfect. The time travel theme was not ridiculous, campy or trite. In the most basic level it was just E + D trying their best to manage their attraction all while living in a completely different century.
I loved ODC! Elizabeth and Darcy were likable people. I felt their struggles, I laughed and cried right along with both of them. The supporting characters (new + old) were original and creatively drawn. Loved Georgianna, Charlotte and Mr. Darcy’s steward.
My next step: planning when to re-read so I can really savor the story a second time! Enjoy!

Where did I find out about Nine Ladies? In an unlikely place..A non fiction book, Generations, by Gene Twinge.
Everyone who loves novels by Jane Austen has been disappointed when authors try to imagine a sequel to one of her novels. Nine Ladies succeeds creating a Pride and Prejudice remake which reads very well.
Warning, you must know the story and characters to really enjoy this book

This is a most unusual variation that simultaneously engendered several different emotions. It took a good portion of the story to get drawn into the time travel plot in a positive way. On the other hand, I am impressed by the details of 19th century life and language that provide amusing contrast to their 21st century versions. The emotions and reactions of the various characters-Elizabeth and Darcy of course, but also Reynolds, Georgiana and Col Fitzwilliam-caused tears as often as smiles. Definitely worth reading especially for time travel fans, but not one I will read again.

    This was a gripping novel.

In it, Elizabeth from 2011 accidentally falls back in time through druid ruins and ends up in 1811 Pemberley. After a rocky start, she spends 3 months over there until the next solstice when she can travel back. All of this, knowing that future Pemberley is in ruins and Mr Darcy dies that year. SPOILER: He gets sick at the end of her 3 months, when Elizabeth cannot bear to see him die, so she brings him to the future.

    The story eventually ends happily.

I liked the writing styles, the meticulous care with time keeping, the back and forth with the time while discussing the reactions to events and at the same, the facts that led to it. It was really well done.

I thought the modern Elizabeth was too much at the beginning, sometimes becoming angry at not much, exaggerating some slangs, etc. Perhaps the author meant to show her distress through too much impertinence? In any case, I loved how kind she was, particularly towards Georgiana.

I think the explanations to forge his way back were enough to make it believable without becoming taxing. I found it interesting that the Bingleys fled when Darcy was very ill. I thought keeping the gowns were good idea. However, the easy way that Darcy took the modern things without refuting because of god is different, and perhaps some explanation about that would be nice. And some explanation to what happens with Jane and Mrs Bennet would also be appreciated.

I have always loved time travel books. I have often wondered what would it be like to go through a time portal and walk into a Pride and Prejudice scene. How do the authors of P & P variations think up all of these story lines. I for one are very grateful that they do. I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. It was a great story and if you like to escape into a story at the end of a busy day, then this is for you. This is the first book I have read by this author but it certainly will not be the last.

5.0 out of 5 stars A bit of emotional roller coaster... Beautifully written!
Reviewed in France on January 30, 2021
French call it 'montagnes russes' and it IS just that!
A beautiful story, full of emotional ups and downs, although I wouldn't call it exactly angst. I never doubted the HEA (stress the EA in this phrase😉) but I did need a tissue or twenty all along.
I even needed them when I read about Pemberley being in ruins ( not to mention the fate of the owner! and this is all the spoiling I would give)...

I loved the surprising Mrs Reynolds' and Georgiana's tales and how almost all of the other characters faded to leave place for D&E ... Yes, there are almost all there (Mrs Bennet, Mr Bennet, Jane, Charlotte, Collins, Wickham, Caroline, Bingley, the Colonel etc), some only mentionned others with heavier impact. Some are missing ... But what I Absolutely loved was the fact that everything was about Darcy and Elizabeth ! A lot of conversations, a lot of teasing, a lot of witty repartees, a lot of tenderness, awkardness, heartwrenching farewells and most of all a lot of LOVE!

I found Elizabeth in the beginning obnoxious and petty and agressive and too ready to think the worst of Darcy .... But this is exactly what I always thought about her... !
Her feelings will of course undergo such material a change... and I was particularly touched by how Darcy was sure of her love in order to plan everything!
But then.... Darcy is absolutely without fault throughout !😉💜
(I am Not biaised at all)

I thought all along of all the routes this story could take us... And while I am Absolutely Happy with the outcome, I can't help but Wonder what the other way round would be ... Might we persuade the author to write and alternative ending? I would surely love to read it! 😍

Somewhat fixed on not giving anything away as spoilers, I almost forgot to mention the humour and wit resulting from Darcy's sometimes anachronical manners and language as opposed to Elizabeth's modernisms and americanisms ... Of course, Darcy has also a dry witt and plays this anachronism wonderfully!

And I have to thank the author for expanding my English ! Callipygian indeed! :-)

Both a fantastically original P&P retelling AND a top notch time travel saga - absolute must read (read it in a single sleepless night). It's hard enough to find such a high quality read to match it in either category, but amazing it does both simultaneously with so much credit. It'll probably be my favourite book of the year and its only January.
