Tragedy has befallen the Russian submarine, Ussuri. Without explanation, the vessel has been lost to the depths of the ocean, all hands aboard presumed lost. A team of deep-sea divers has been dispatched to investigate.

What they will discover is the infinity of depths and landscapes that become only more alien to them. And as the team themselves are stricken by yet another tragedy, they must face the increasing reality of the possibilities that lay below. That what awaits them could be the ultimate truth. Or madness.

Or both.

(I happen to have created the base cover image for this short story series, but that is unrelated to my feelings here as a reader)

I'll keep this short. I've always had a fascination with the ocean and its depths. One of my pinterest boards for conceptualizing is just images of sunken ships and other objects, I think because sunken things have a deeply haunting look to them. Something about the water and sediment, and also the lights needed to bathe them into visibility. I also grew up watching deep sea diving/mining films like THE ABYSS, DEEPSTAR SIX, LEVIATHAN, etc., which probably helped my fascination along.

This short captures everything those made me feel, then does something more. Won't spoil. Also, in remarkably short time. This is definitely one of those shorts that reminds why the form is still so vital.

Anyway, just read it. If this sounds interesting at all, I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Laura Mauro's new short story, NINGEN, surprised me by the way it crept under my skin so easily. She's a very good writer who knows how to chill you with her prose. Loved the tale and especially the ending! Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliantly atmospheric

A wonderful tense story which I very much enjoyed, is of a team of divers sent to rescue survivors of a Ussuri a Russian submarine in the depths of the seas off Japan. On their first excursion through the gloom the divers see grooves on the side of the hull, could these be from a Megalodon like creature still alive in the ocean depth.

The story follows Mike one of the most experienced divers on the team, as he comes to realise there is something in the dark ocean with them. Throughout the story there is a creeping sense of dread and tension as Mike pieces together the snippets of information. There are hints of a larger picture happening top side. The Ussuri has come to rest in an otherworldy  place, so well portrayed as being almost alien and hostile with the divers isolated in their heavy restrictive suits. A conspiracy theorist might think the Russians were upto no good and found what they were seeking.

5.0 out of 5 stars Eerie, and wonderfully written

I loved the strange descriptions of the "thing" encountered on the sea bed and, even then, Mauro doesn't give us everything, just enough that we can fill in the rest of the horror with our imaginations. I thought the characters were handled very well, too, especially with Mike reflecting on how comfortable he is while on a deep sea dive, and how this plays out in the terrifying finale. Fantastic story.

I first read Laura in Interzone magazine and I was blown away by her prose and her story. I am now trying to read all of her stories. This one is great. If you liked 'The Abyss' or maybe 'Starfish' by Watts, you'll like this Deep Sea short story.

This is a stunning short story, but then I have come to expect nothing less from Laura Mauro. The tension builds slowly as Mauro masterfully captures the claustrophobic dread of a deep sea dive done wrong. Fantastic stuff, and I can only agree with other reviewers that I wish it had been longer.

Pitch-perfect prose, strong characterisation, and a fascinating setting ripe with mystery. My only criticism is that there wasn't more of it - I wanted to know what happened beyond the story's end. I hope Mauro returns to this setting in the fuure.
