- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2017This is my first book read by Kath Middleton and I was very surprised. Usually I found that books set in this time period are slightly boring but this wasn't the case for The Novice's Demon. It was a fun short read that had a lot of character driven moments.
While the story didn't finish as much as I would have liked it was still a very well written book. The characters as well seemed to have a lot of great moments and if the author ever decides she could easily revisit the story and make a second work of art to show just what happened to the poor Benedictine Sister.
Very well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2017I really enjoyed this spooky well written tale. Takes you right back to another time and will keep you reading to the end.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2017I'm intrigued by grotesques and gargoyles, so was attracted by the cover of this book. I can imagine this story being told as the legend to explain why one of these carved figures looks as it does.

4.0 out of 5 stars Perfect when you just want something quick to read
The Novice’s Demon is a short story and took me about half an hour to read. Perfect when you just want something quick to read.
The story flicks between Breage, a young novice who has become a shadow of her former self and letters between Father Joseph and Mother Prioress who are concerned for her well being.
Poor Breage really is having a hard time of it. She is only eighteen and has set her sights on living the rest of her life as a nun. Due to unwelcome visits in her dreams, she is becoming withdrawn and causing concern for the people around her.
The Novice’s Demon is a mix of horror and suspense. The reader to a certain extent is as confused as the people concerned about Breage. I didn’t know what to believe, was it Breage’s imagination or something beyond our beliefs? It’s up to each reader to decide that for themselves.
Overall a good little read and would certainly read more by the author with this being my first book by them.

5.0 out of 5 stars A chilling little novella...that will make your mind wander..
In the Fourteenth Century, eighteen year old Breage a novice from Cornwall still to take her holy vows has a visitor in the night...This visitor terrifies her..haunting her dreams and leaving her in fear of her life..Gone is the sweet happy young girl who entered the convent. Now Breage is a ghost of the girl she once was.., pale ,emaciated and frightened.Mother Everild the Superior is at a loss how to help her..so she writes to Father Joseph for help.Father Joseph agrees to see Breage...with Breage confiding in him about her night terrors..As Bteages nightmares continue the nuns fear she is losing her mind ...then whispers are spread...Breage is given extra duties...In the garden where she loves here she can watch the stonemason at work...Then one day when Father Joseph arrives at the convent Breage is nowhere to be found....I enjoyed this short story ...I felt for poor Breage as her life was plagued by nightmares....I also liked the conclusion of the story....as for this you will have to read this little novella yourself....A chilling little read....

5.0 out of 5 stars Good vs evil told in a very different way
A mystery of good vs evil told in a very different way. I was completely engrossed in the story and could not stop reading.
I found the ending was perfect. We can guess what happened at the end but I think if readers were asked, there would be a lot of different responses.
That is what makes this story so good. To have an absolute explanation would detract from how the story was told.
For me this was a true mystery and I loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Offering
Fresh on the heels of the excellent novella ‘Beneath the Ink’ Kath Middleton switches horror sub-genres and brings us a creepy ghost story from the 14th century. Breage, a young nun, is plagued by the night-time visits of a malign presence, and a terror that grows more profound as the story develops. As the characters struggle to deal with the mystery of Breage’s predatory spirit visitor, she herself begins to experience something of a sexual awakening…
The authenticity of the period and setting ring true and the author employs an effective narrative device whereby parts of the story move along in letters between two of the major characters. I found the tale enjoyable even though I generally avoid ghost stories, much preferring my horror to be a little more literal, but that’s only a mild personal gripe.
In all, another excellent offering from Kath Middleton.
