Numinous: A Dark Paranormal Romance Novel (Numinous Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 41 ratings

What if The Great Gatsby was a romance with a happy ending...set in Louisiana...where folklore meets dark magic?
It can be read as a standalone or with its prequel novella, SONGBIRD, available now.

Prophetic nightmares. Spirit possession. Dark magic.
“Don’t let it mark you like it did me.”

Julien:
I had the heart of a hustler. The American dream was mine for the taking.
My poor past would never be my future. Nothing would get in my way—or so I thought, until Blossom, my turquoise-eyed spirit, stormed into my life.
She bewitched me the moment I laid eyes on her.
But her curiosity was brazen. I warned her that spells and spirits would only bring trouble, but she didn’t listen.
Giving her up was the only way to keep her safe, as long as she remembered that she was mine.

Blossom:
America’s sweetheart. The virtuous daughter of a Southern politician. I was groomed to fulfill the family legacy and marry a man I could hardly stand.
But magic beckoned—the type I should have thought twice before conjuring.
Its pull was almost as strong as that of the dark and mysterious stranger who had crossed my perfectly straight path.
Julien was everything that was missing from my life: excitement, danger, seduction.
One kiss, and I was instantly his—until sinister forces threatened to rip him away.
Now, my only saving grace was something that I couldn’t explain—that feeling that they call
numinous.

Blossom and Julien met when they were young, but he disappeared from her life. Now they've come across each other again when she goes to a party at her house. Her family had convinced her that it was in her best interest to marry someone else, but she's airways had feelings for him. As things come to light with her family together they have a lot to overcome.

This book is dark, but don't pass on it. You won't regret it!

Dark and lengthy read with undercurrents rife with triggers. However, pleasantly shocked over the originality feeling I had upon reading this. What follows their storyline is one filled with a push and pull, heat, suspense, tragedy and is multi-layered with linked lives and lies.

Julien - Crawled through poverty and raised by his grandmother to become a part of the police force. Brought into a dark fold, pushing his wants aside for a rags to riches life on the coat tails of bribery and treachery.

Blossom - Louisiana's sweetheart, the daughter of a Southern politician. Suffocating from the pressures and immediately enraptured by Julien for years until she is pushed aside and darkly forced into a union of stagnation.

New to me author who creates darker romance without holding back on inclusion and diversity. Looking forward to reading more from them.

This book was inspired by the great gatsby and I loved the vibes. It also reminded me of trueblood a lot, (the settings is in Louisiana & there’s dark magic)

All of the reviews I saw all said how dark this book was, and while there are a lot of dark themes to it, a lot of it doesn’t go into major detail or is off page. That’s my take. But I also read a lot of dark romance. As always check the trigger warnings because we all have different opinions and potential triggers. The author does have a list in the front of the book & on her website.

The writing itself was beautiful and the story was unique and awe inspiring. If you like stories that play into the concept of soulmates, you’ll really enjoy this story.

Numinous, a dark paranormal romance, follows Blossom and Julien as they get trapped in darkness around them, full of spirit possession and crime.

My opinion on Numinous is a little mixed; on the one hand, I really enjoyed it and couldn't put it down. On the other hand, I was very frustrated by the plot. The decade jumps that occurred throughout the book fragmented what was happening with Blossom and Julien, and by part 2, all I could think about was The Great Gatsby (just with more of a BDSM twist to it). I'm a big fan of dark romance, but this one didn't really do it for me in that aspect. I will say that I read this very quickly for an almost 500-page book, which gives a testament to how it sucked me in from the beginning. I also did enjoy Julien and the way he loved Blossom even amongst everything he was involved in and the years they were separated. And the cover is STUNNING; can't forget that!

TW for sexual content, cheating, magic/possession, trafficking, racism, rape, references to miscarriages/infertility, alcohol/pill addiction, homophobia.

This was my first Victoria Woods read and really enjoyed it! Pnr but with occult themes. I liked the dynamic between Julien and Blossom throughout the book. The spice was good and had some bee dee s em elements to it. Overall, I enjoyed this!

Numinous by Victoria Woods is a dark romance novel.

Prophetic nightmares. Spirit possession. Dark magic.
Childhood obsession turned irresistible passionate affair.
How does a sweet girl from Louisiana get tangled into a web of horror and lies? **Trigger Warnings***
This book includes themes of cheating, magic/possession, underage/child trafficking, racism, orgies/sex with multiple partners, rape, references to miscarriages/lost pregnancies/infertility, horror themes in the context of fables and folklore, and using religious elements, assumptions about religion, substance abuse (opioid, benzodiazepines, alcohol) to numb mental illness, and suicide.

It’s heavy, tormenting, and DARK in all senses of the word. You’ve been warned, so please proceed with caution

I rated Numinous 5 out of 5 stars. The characters are interesting and relatable. The story engages with betrayal, lies, surprises, and twists. My heart ached for the characters and how life tossed them around, and how the evils of the world stole their happiness. They had an instant love bordering on obsession, but sometimes it isn't enough. Despite everything, they have a second chance, but this time, they have help. I enjoyed the addition of spiritual themes and the belief in deities and possession. The story had a bit of a slow start, but at about a quarter of the way through, I couldn't book the book down. I had to know what was going to happen. The anticipation was brutal, with all the emotions I felt swirling around. This is one of those books that touches something deep inside you, and you can't forget it. The story has a lot of dark themes that it borders on. Please check the content warning if there are topics you prefer not to read. However, if you love dark stuff, skip the warnings and enjoy the ride. This book is for adults only due to the graphic scenes and sensitive topics included in this book. If you like dark romance with some urban paranormal themes, this second-chance romance is a must-read.

You know the saying, ‘The lady doth protest too much, methinks’? Well, in this case the lady (lady in the loosest of terms *snorts*) that doth-eth is moi. In the past I would have sworn blind that dark romance wasn’t for me, but you know what? That inner darkness of mine hungered for Numinous and together we gorged ourselves on Julien and Blossom’s story.

Some of my friends have likened my mind to Headquarters in Inside Out and, hey *shrugs*, they ain’t wrong *smirks*; Fear was nearly in a dead faint after reading the TWs but Joy and Disgust (she can be a bit twisted) were having none of it and had her hogtied from one page to the next *cackles*.

Numinous is a story of a love that won’t be denied where power corrupts, and revenge is sweet. This haunting retelling of The Great Gatsby chewed me up and spit me back out and I loved every dark twisted word.

Living is… ‘A symphony of chaos.’

We all know my moral compass (in reading… obvs) doesn’t exactly point due north yet there were still times I was reaching for my metaphorical cushion to hide behind. My heart was hurting (vague much, Laura?) and I was questioning what I knew to be true. Like any good virtual wingwoman I was collating my own list on Blossom’s behalf for when the reckoning began.

Let’s not even discuss my anxiety which was through the roof as the suspense and tension built throughout the book. Coupled with the ‘Holy Hotness!’ of the seggsy times and I. Was. A. Woman. On. The. Edge!

    *blows out breath*

Six months down the line and I still can’t forget this story. Considering this was my first Victoria Woods book what kind of state will be in if I’m brave enough to pick up another?

    *rubs hands together*

    Let’s find out, shall we?!

Now for me PNR goes one of two ways and Victoria Woods captured my mind, soul & heart with this read.

Blossom is one fierce and sassy character, her inner monologue is utter perfection *chefs kiss* she absoluely slays and captivates.

*Well, none except for that guy I lost my virginity to at my senior prom a few months ago , and I’d hardly call that minute-man a lover.*

Nicks banter, friendship, love and perspective flows effortlessly with Blossom.

The twists, turns and mystical and mysterious theme to this book leaves you devouring. Questions fly by but with each page it falls together. I am absoloutley hooked on Julien & Blossem!

The second half of this book sky rocketed for sure. For me the first half set the scene and story perfectly and is exactly what you need as a reader. I dunno why but i feel Beau's death was cowardly but he also i feel had more to his side of the story.

I absolutely DEVOURED this book and yet again Victoria has written a book I'm in love with!
