Old Desires: An unexpected inheritance reveals old love affairs and devastating secrets. Kindle Edition

4.0 out of 5 stars 234 ratings

"And you have the pleasure of sleeping in my four-poster bed."

"Your bed?" The image of his dark head against the lace-edge pillow brought a slow burn to Holly's cheeks.

"Does that bother you?" Joshua asked. "No," she said, quickly. "Why should it?"

"No reason. But I would have thought an enquiry as to whether I was still using it before you answered was advisable. Or maybe you're not that fussy."

Joshua Kent infuriated Holly - he was cavalier, overbearing and convinced she was a good-for-nothing gold-digger. Far worse was his bombshell that her past was a complete fabrication.

A new identity - and the inheritance which went with it -meant that Holly could embark on a new life. But where did Joshua fit into the scheme of things - was he just using the desire which flared between them to manipulate her?

Only time would tell...

Imagine opening your door to a sexy stranger coming to deliver news of a death in the family. Or worse you attend the will reading of the deceased and major shock follows ...she was not your aunt by your mother!

This is the start to the fabulous book by one of the best authors of all time. The chemistry and rough moments of some very delightful dialogue between Joshua and Holly was splendid and so much fun to read.

I loved how the author used little tricks here and there to bring these two characters to a fiery duel of romance.

What I especially loved was the mystery behind the identity of Holly's father. It added to the allure of the book and in the end brought it all together for me as reader.

This is one of Liz's earlier books re-released with a new cover. But the book was certainly not old fashioned in any manner, the author still delivered a stunning romance. I was left with a everlasting impression of love found in unexpected places under rather suspenseful and unnerving circumstances bringing forth a revelation of another kind.

The author achieved her goal of awakening desires with a explosive flame !
    Nicely done Liz!

A vintage Liz Fielding novel which made me realize something interesting. Since returning to reading romance novels several years ago, I've come to understand that Liz Fielding is a romance novelist on top of her craft. Reading this one has made me understand that she's been on top of her craft for a very long time indeed. She knows how to give a reader a good time - to make you laugh, cry and make your heart leap with the very intimate and tender emotions that only new love can bring.

The two main characters, Holly and Joshua quickly become familiar - Holly, a loving, vulnerable young woman who lost her beloved mother in recent years and who has been struggling along as an art teacher and Joshua, cold, forbidding and judgmental. Prejudiced against poor Holly really. Holly's struggle to come to terms with her parentage and the gradual melting of Joshua's prejudice. As the story gradually moves towards the realization of the truth, the reader is right there with her.

Interestingly, the point of view is all Holly's. Unlike many of the romance novels of today, we don't get the male POV. And do you know what? We don't want to either. It's very much Holly's story, and the story of her engagement with the reader.

Highly recommended. A warm, lovely read.

    Quite an unexpected book.
Nothing like I have ever read before.
Holly gets an unexpected visit by a very rude man.
This rude man changes the course of her life.
She goes through a series of life changing events and ends up again in a quite unexpected state.
    So good!

I downloaded this book on my kindle because it was free and I liked other books from this author.
    I didn't like this story.
I think the fact that you only know what holly is thinking and feeling, doesn't work good in this story. Also it leaves many issues unfinished.
I think it was boring, it laked depth and you don't see anywhere how the characters fall in love.
I'm glad I didn't pay for this one!

Wonderful characters, fabulous writing, what more do you need. I hate her book covers, because they make the books look like they are taudry, when in fact they are wonderful stories about great characters. I highly recommend it.

I had this book for quite some time and today I read it all.
I’m quite glad I did. It’s about a young woman who believes that her cousins passed away when the young man managed to get her to the memorial service and the reading of the will she’s forced to dig into the past. Only then she realised she was not a cousin but the daughter.

    Touching story

I absolutely adored the nod to all 'net-twitchers', which I confess, I am. Good inspiration for writing! "...Already attracting curtain twitching from a window opposite..." Ha ha!

    Anyway, the review...

This story is mainly set in Devon in the UK. Devon is personally one of my favourite places on this Earth and Liz created such a wonderful picture, I will be visiting again soon!

Joshua Kent is the definition of "...Iron self-control..." A brooding, complex character. Who can be as harsh a viper's bite but as tender as only a man in love can be. As Holly soon comes to realise "... He would be very easy to love..."

Holly Carpenter, "... She looked like some half-mad gipsy from a Victorian melodrama..."

Holly had the complete essence of a free spirit, trying to claw her way out of the constraints of this world. Shackled by not only financial burdens but of the loss of her parents... Loss that found her too soon, not once, not twice but three times!

"Holly knew he was going to kiss her. Knew without a doubt that she wanted him to kiss her..."

Dialogue is captivating and the conflicts are emotionally moving, some very unpredictable conflicts that were entertaining and highly emotional.

"I forgot the first rule of the game, Holly.’ His voice was ragged, his smile a little crooked. ‘If you’re going to make love to a woman before dinner, it’s wise to cook it yourself."

Liz Fielding is becoming one of my 'go to' authors. Her writing is swift but gentle, evocative yet sensual and she tackles sensitive issues with such care. A highly recommended read for any #Boonie or Liz Fielding fan. 4/5 stars from me.
