Who's Killing the Alchemy Winery?: Old Guys Murder Mystery #6 Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 155 ratings

The bride said yes.

Then she sipped the most expensive wine in the world. Then, alas, she dropped dead.

Somebody was trying to destroy the legendary Alchemy Winery by knocking off some of its best customers. One by one.
Charlie and Ben step in. They don’t know Pinot from Thunderbird. But they know murder.

In this sixth hilarious and twist-filled adventure, Charlie and Ben find themselves deep inside the castle-like estate of Alchemy Winery, navigating a maze of suspects, secrets, and vintage deception.

With the help of their sharp-tongued crew--yep, including Pettise--they uncover betrayals that go back decades—and a killer who’s just getting started.

This mystery is clever, intriguing, full of old-guy charm, and just plain fun to read. You’ll laugh. You’ll gasp. You may never sip wine again without thinking of the Alchemy Winery.

If you’re a fan of Richard Osman, Robert Thorogood, Janet Evanovich, Carl Hiaasen, or anyone who knows murder should come with a side of mischief—welcome to the club.

This is a fast read. Old guys like things fast.

I’m still trying to get my head around the fact that ‘Take Out’ can mean food, dating, or murder.

Somewhere squishing around that thought, I write murder mysteries about old guys solving murders. If you’re under 40, you should pass on these novels. Wait at least ten years, then you’ll enjoy and appreciate them more.

If, however, you’re over 50, these mysteries might hit your sweet spot, well worth the try.

I’m a Wall Street Journal best-selling author, having written nine novels and four non-fiction books. The Old Guys Murder Mystery series has been, by far, the most fun.

The Old Guys Murder Mystery books are fast reads. Old guys like things fast.

I love this series. The chatacters are realistic and memorable. It's truly sad when one of them dies. The plots are great (I haven't figured out any of them in advance) and the scenes are like over-cooked steaks -- well done. Everyone over fifty should put this series on their required reading list. I bet I'd enjoy the series even more if I liked golf.

This is another great book in the old guys murder mystery series. A lot of the familiar characters are in the story and they do not disappoint but it is the new characters that make this book such fun. The ending will really be quite a surprise.

Despite a definite need for more proofreading, I much enjoyed Old Guys Murder Mystery (OGMM) #6, Kindle Edition---and the other five, too. It was as comfortable as an old shoe to pick right up with Charlie and Ben’s familiar lifestyles and uncanny abilities to solve another murder. Since I annotate nearly every book I read, and can well identify with the aging theme, I noted some of the quotes from famous people about aging which appear at the beginning of #6’s chapters, unfortunately absent from some books in this series. I also waxed nostalgic at the mention of Wally Phillips and Larry Lujack, whom I often listened to, growing up in my parents’ home, and “…two-buck chuck” (Charles Shaw) vs the $5K (pre-torching) Alchemy. The wry humor throughout the OGMMs was refreshing, especially this clever chuckle from #6: “…’Take Out’ can mean food, dating, or murder.” I’m looking forward to #7, and after reading the Do-Overs teaser at #6’s end, that too, Jon.—DM

This is a reasonable yarn - but: rather drawn out; with a lot of characters
THEN - the ending reads like the author had enough and had decided to end the book… It quickly finishes with a contrived, convoluted series of explanations, some w-a-y out of left field!

The old guys are at it again. When a bride is killed on her wedding day at one of the priciest locations available for weddings, another bride wants to get married there, but she's afraid. The old guys (my favorite term for them) are asked to investigate. They can't resist the golfing venues offered to them. It's a wild ride with excellent wine and mysteries galore. It was another fun read in the series.

The formula still works pretty well, but the writing seems to start plodding just a bit. And maybe, just maybe, the roof finally does get fixed
