Who's Killing the Serenity Cruise?: Old Guys Murder Mystery #7 Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 125 ratings

Getting murdered on a dream cruise is more than random bad luck.

It’s crazy.

One hapless passenger is going to get whacked unless Serenity Cruise coughs up one million bucks.

Charlie and Ben are undercover (sort of) to ferret out the killer. There are some undercover FBI agents (kind of) swarming around. Any one of the 800 passengers and 200 crew could be the killer.

Charlie and Ben enjoy this maiden voyage (definitely) of the Serenity Cruise. It’s 16 days long, weaving around ports in the Caribbean, going through the Panama Canal, and then going up the Baja Peninsula to LA, giving Charlie and Ben no rest in their quest. (Full transparency: not quite true; as you know, Charlie and Ben have fun anywhere.)

There are some obvious candidates who the killer is (you’ll know them), and some non-obvious ones that would fool anybody. There are some rumored secret rooms on Serenity, which makes this a jigsaw puzzle with too many pieces.

This is a quirky mystery novel that tosses sharp twists, dry humor, zero cursing, and a hero who refuses to age quietly into the same blender.

If you’re a fan of Richard Osman, Robert Thorogood, Janet Evanovich, Carl Hiaasen, or anyone who knows murder should come with a side of mischief—welcome to the club.

This is a fast read. Old guys like things fast.

WHAT READERS SAY

***** “I so enjoy these characters, they are smart, funny, and they take a murder mystery to a new level. I really enjoy the way this writer writes, there is wisdom there.”

***** “It has a great cast of characters that one would love to have as friends.”

***** “I must admit out of the thousands of mysteries I have read, none have ended this way. Well done!”

***** “A fast-paced, imaginative, and laugh-out-loud funny mystery.”

***** “I’m in love with one of the old guys. I’m not telling which.”

“I was thinking of another book series to compare this to. The 1st that came to mind was the Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman. Both series feature old people as protagonists. Both are fun to read. Both are mostly cozy mysteries. The one element I like better in Spoelstra’s series is that the main characters are American with American humor. This is not to swat at the British, not at all: the Old Guys Murder series is just more fun for me, as an American, to read. So there it is plain and simple: I’m reading not to make myself smarter, but for the fun of it all.”

I’m still trying to get my head around the fact that ‘Take Out’ can mean food, dating, or murder.

Somewhere squishing around that thought, I write murder mysteries about old guys solving murders. If you’re under 40, you should pass on these novels. Wait at least ten years, then you’ll enjoy and appreciate them more.

If, however, you’re over 50, these mysteries might hit your sweet spot, well worth the try.

I’m a Wall Street Journal best-selling author, having written nine novels and four non-fiction books. The Old Guys Murder Mystery series has been, by far, the most fun.

The Old Guys Murder Mystery books are fast reads. Old guys like things fast.

Charlie and Ben just keep getting better with age. Their latest adventure on a cruise ship is anything but a cruise. Although they do sneak in a few rounds golf. They are joined by several interesting characters and the final twist was far from predictable. Jon Spoelstra even got in a mention of one of my favorite movies, Eddie and the Cruisers. As with the other books in this series, this one is an enjoyable read. Enjoy the adventure.

Once again Jon Spolelstra did not disappoint. Fast moving, highly entertaining, and a great story line. Another book that made this old guy laugh and read jokes to his wife. Keep the good work Jon!

I've read the entire series and feel like I know these guys and gals...from their favorite food and drink to favorite game (golf). The author never fails to deliver a book that I can enjoy. None of the books will be considered great literature, but they're all fun to read.

I like this series, I really do, but honestly somebody needs to proofread these before they go to press. Examples: On p. 59 the captain of the ship is introduced as "Captain Xavier X. de Leon", but everywhere else in the book he is referred to as "Captain Cesar X. de Leon". On p. 114 Jane is in the bathtub in Charlie's suite while he and Ben are in the living room talking to Reggie on the phone. During the call "Jane" speaks several times - even though she's still in the bathroom, because near the end of the call on p. 116 Jane "steps out of the bathroom". Kristen has a butterfly tat on her leg, but then Ben refers to the turtle tat on her leg. Errors like these are annoying and disrupt the story - which is a shame, because it's a good story. Hopefully the next book will have better editing.

This is a wonderful series. It has mystery, murder, humor, romance, a great cast of characters, great writing and so much heart and soul. If these old gents were real I would love to be their best friend. What a bunch of gentile, fun loving characters! I cannot wait for the next in this series.
