Of Shadow and Stone Paperback – February 24, 2015
Purchase options and add-ons
Gargoyles were created centuries ago to protect mankind, but something went horribly wrong. Now only the sentinel―a mortal chosen to control the stone beasts―stands between them and their human prey.
When the latest sentinel is killed, Kate Mercer is destined to take his place. But Kate has enough going on in her life―like a skyrocketing film career, a delusional ex-boyfriend, and a crazed stalker who will stop at nothing to get to her. But the powers that be have decided, and Kate is transported to Shadow Wood, a mysterious castle that serves as a sanctuary for the supernatural. Although beautiful, Shadow Wood is no safe place for a mere mortal. Yet Kate is drawn not only to the gargoyles but also to Ian McGuire, a charming novelist who might be in the greatest danger of all.
As Kate decides whether to accept the most perilous role of her life, she discovers there are more secrets than answers within the castle’s walls. Her survival and Ian’s depend on her ability to master the gargoyles before time runs out. Is fate really cast in stone?

About the author

Michelle has always loved storytelling. When she was a child, her favorite stories were of monsters and things that lurked in the dark. Telling stories often frightened her classmates and got her into a lot of trouble with her teachers. They had no sense of humor.
As an adult, Michelle traded her love of writing for the corporate life where she was an IT professional. Today, she's doing what she loves best - writing and storytelling.
Michelle loves chocolate, dogs, changes of season, and people who have a sense of humor.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2015Really enjoyed this story, not you're everyday, story about werewolves, vampire, and warlocks, and there's even gargoyles in the mix. The story revolves around an "inhabited'", castle in Scotland, the "country club" if you will for all creatures supernatural, and a mortal paranormal writer and mortal actress, who together manage to take out a deranged stalker, and fulfill her role at the castle as the sentinel of the gargoyles.
The pace is fast, there's a bit of romance, mystery, and a bit of supernatural all mixed in together, that makes for an interesting read.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2015I couldn't put this one down the minute it downloaded on my Kindle. A unique premise, strong characters, and fast-paced plot ultimately make a well-written, fun read. I'm a fan of PNR when written well, and I liked Kate and Ian's relationship. I also loved the action - Kate was a kickass heroine. I'm guessing this is a standalone? But will say that I hope there is another one to build more on the characters (like Ian's deal!) and backstories, including the gargoyles. They're interesting and I would love to know more about them. Muto really has a gift with words and I enjoy her writing style, too.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 11, 2015The story is engaging in terms of plot because it's new (at least to me) - but there is little depth. The characters are two-dimensional because they have only their most recent experiences mentioned. There is nothing to explain why they are the way they are - to include the fact that pretty much everyone in the story, with one exception, is very attractive. The problem that faces the main protagonist is drawn out to the point of silliness; it really isn't faced until close to the end of the book. There is the implication of sex without any really being mentioned, and this gave the book a feeling of being more for teens even though all the characters are adults. I'm not looking for porn - but it's mentioned and nothing more. Any nudity has to do with extenuating circumstances, not mutual attraction. The violence, while present, mostly involves supernatural beings - so in some ways, it's a given.
The proofreading and editing are pretty good. There are a few basic issues that should have been caught since the proofreading is so good, to include using the word "repelling" (the opposite of attracting) when what was meant was "rappelling." A character says "I'll be doggone!" when it should have been "I'll be doggoned!" "It's gold-flinted eys" should have been "It's gold-flecked eyes." Also, there's the point where a character who is supposed to be a best-selling author says, "Together. You and I." Argh. It should have been, "Together. You and me." And a best-selling author would have known that. At least gosh, I sure HOPE a best-selling author would know that.
I read this over the course of two evenings, and I'll admit to skipping some paragraphs of description here and there. It's a very easy read because there are very few details to track (alas). All in all, it isn't a bad effort...but it isn't a great one, either. This could have been a very compelling duology if the author had taken the time with it.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2018LOVED this book. Michelle Muto is one of my favorite authors for a reason. Well-crafted writing, imaginative other worlds, characters that are easy to like and relate to, dialogue that is believable. This book is a very unique take on a world where gargoyles live. You will never look at them the same way again.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 20, 2017Of Shadow and Stone by Michelle Muto is a book about vamps, weres, a warlock, gargoyles, and the hunt for a human to be the next leader for the gargoyles. The gargoyles need to pick this leader, they have a psychic bond with them. Two humans have come to the castle picked by the warlock and others, one will be chosen from the two. What happens is so exciting, well, who wouldn't be excited to be hitching a ride in a gargoyles mind as they track down bad guys? Although the girl does get a bit squeamish with the gore, not me! Oh dear, what does that say about me? LOL. Been a nurse too long?
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2015I love this book. Shadow Wood sounded so romantic and mysterious At first I thought Kate would end up with Declan but I loved Ian from the start and am so happy for them. I won't tell the secrets but it is wonderful and should be read and enjoyed. Thanks Michelle for sharing your wonderful talent with us your loyal readers.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2016I like gargoyles, so I was looking forward to reading this book, but the ones in this story were pretty scary, only held under control by the sentinel from attacking and killing humans. Kate Mercer, a popular film star, is chosen to become the next sentinel, but she’s not sure any of this supernatural stuff is even real. She already has a crazy stalker, an ex-boyfriend who won’t take no for an answer, and a demanding career, and now there is a whole supernatural world revealed to her and she must make a decision soon whether to accept her new role or not. The story seemed all over the place, with werewolves, vampires, blood thirsty gargoyles and assorted other supernaturals running around Shadow Wood, where Kate has been brought. For some reason this story just didn’t quite hit the mark with me, most of the characters seemed pretty one dimensional and I didn’t care for most of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars like the love interest
Of Shadow and Stone was both what I was expecting, and what I wasn't expecting. There are some elements to the novel that I didn't expect at all, like the love interest. I expected Of Shadow and Stone to be action-y and while it *was* I just wish there had been more action than there already was.
Nevertheless! Of Shadow and Stone was a great read for me. I enjoyed getting to know all of the characters. I wish there was a second book! Haha.
