An Ocean of Light: Beyond the Pale, vol. 2 Kindle Edition

4.7 out of 5 stars 32 ratings

Following closely on the events of A Touch of Lightning, Jake and his 18 year-old son, Ben, try to make a place for each other in their own lives, as well as for Jake's fiance, Fox. A honeymoon-slash-graduation gift in Las Vegas leads the men down a path of intrigue when a young man named Eric--a Lycan--comes their way, desperately looking for a way out of his curse. Ben's instincts to protect kick in as his attraction to the careworn drifter evolves, especially knowing that Eric is being pursued...

Will the men find common ground on which to build a life from? Or a home? Is home possible when all one has known was fear and hunger? What do the fates have in store for Ben--the son of a powerful alchemist whose blood has been imbued with that same power?

Kit is a number of things--an Air Force veteran, a stage director, stage actor, stage singer, karaoke enthusiast, sugar-fueled author and a devoted cat-dad. More times than he cares to admit, Kit likes to pretend that the things he writes about are real. If you're quick, you might catch him trying to use the Force on inanimate objects--or even people.

In all seriousness, the sum of Kit's life travels, as far east as the Philippines, and as far west as Iraq, end up as fodder for his writing. He graduated from the University of California, Riverside in 2012 with a degree in Theatre Arts, which is serving him rather well as a substitute teacher for his local public school system. If he's not in rehearsal, he's performing. If he's not performing, he's writing. If he's not writing, he's working. And if he's not working, he's probably dead.

Kit currently resides in Southern California, where he is a part time educator and mindless traffic zombie. Drop him a line sometime!

This book continues from A Touch of Lightning left off. It can be read as a stand one but it is way better if you read the first book and also easier to understand. Ben has now joined his dad Jake and Fox in their adventures, never a dull moment. Alchemy to learn, werewolf to cure, images to avoid and definitely trying not to be killed. This book also has a lot more sex scenes, since now Ben has found his partner, we get to read about both couples (not gonna lie and say I didn't skip some cause I did). But definitely still an interesting series that I'm gladly following.

An Ocean of Light beautifully examined the delicate and complex nature of healing trauma in both body and soul. The author beautifully and respectfully captured the nature of self depreciation and doubt that are common in victims of abuse, all while painting an honest environment of healing. Furthermore, the combination of languages and various forms of lore bring the magical elements of the story to life. The book is masterfully crafted in story telling and following the journey of healing, truly an excellent read.

    voluntary review of arc
An Ocean of Light by author Kit Fortier is the second book in the Beyond the Pale series. In some ways, this book is the best so far and in others, I was frustrated with this one. I am not really into cliff hangers or a happy for now, that is what this book is. Other than that, I loved this book!! This series keeps getting more original every time.
This story has us catching up with Jake and Fox. How they feel about where they left off in the last book, and where they are going now.
Also, this is a book about Ben, Jake’s son. He has graduated from high school and is going to college. He is also experiencing his first love. I like Ben he is very naïve in some ways and wise in others.
Eric is a Lycan looking for a way out of his curse. He has been through hell and back. He really deserves a love like Ben. He has been at the bottom of humanity and finally has found people to trust.
Overall, I loved this one, the ending not so much but just leaves me wanting more! I cannot wait for book three and see what happens next.

New action and intrigue are abound in Kit Fortier’s An Ocean of Light! Jake, Fox, and Ben are looking for something of a normal life as they travel to Las Vegas for vacation. Unfortunately, normal isn’t in their family’s magic genes as they encounter Eric, a lycan who is being hunted and looking for refuge. I love Fortier’s blend of steamy romantic intrigue with epic supernatural battles! This series has always managed to offer thrills of one type or another, something that hasn’t slowed down with the sequel! The journey doesn’t stop here, so I’m excited to see where this crew heads next and how their dynamic evolves from here!

    3.5 🌟 hesitantly rounded up

This book was almost a DNF from the first couple of chapters. The story felt forced, stilted, and unnatural (more so than being supernatural). I was really disappointed because I enjoyed the first book so well, but I had to give it a bit more of a go, even if it did seem like the story was starting out a little predictably.

I'm glad I stuck it out; not only did the writing get better, but the storyline became more entertaining. Of course, we now have Jake and Fox who have reunited with Jake's son, Ben. And, Ben has his own emotions and hidden powers, which play a large part of this book's plotline. Then, we have the lost and broken Eric, who wins the innocent yet strong, still facing un-dealt-with feelings regarding his absentee father, and precocious alchemist, Ben.

Eric presents his own complications, and although Papa Bear grumbles and growls, he worms his altered little self into all the men's hearts. But he also brings danger to their new little family, but some interesting things transpire. A little Aether and a bit more alchemy are the only true fantasy aspects to this book, aside from a lycanthrope and a new mystical creature.

The rest of the story is mainly focused on Ben and Eric's relationship, and Ben's ambition to embarrass his dad as often as possible. Fox doesn't help with that much, but he keeps Jake's head on straight. It felt like there was a lot more angst in this story, mainly because of Eric and his past and feelings of self-worth, or lack thereof. There were also plenty of sexy times for both couples, but nothing in constant comparison to the first, IMO.

There were a couple of things that bothered me besides what I have already mentioned. It was my belief that I was receiving a final proof ARC copy, but I really hope that wasn't the case. There were a lot of errors, but the way they appeared, it seemed as though the book was in the editing process, so I'm just going to hope that is that. I noticed the second issue in book one, but it wasn't so redundantly in your face, or maybe it was because the author did it with both couples?, but the whole "big guy/little guy" and the like got really old, really quickly.

Overall, I was entertained, so I will be giving the next book in the series a try if I come across it. I also read this while my 10 year old daughter and I were both sick, so keep that in mind... I may have been a bit harder on it than I might normally have been. But, it does continue the story where book one left off, and it definitely sets the stage for the next installment. However, I wouldn't call this a HEA; I'd say it's more of a wesurvivedthisbutOmgoodnesswhydothesethingskeephappening, ending.

    Happy reading!

    * I received an ARC of this book and I am leaving my honest review. *

In this story we are meetiing Ben, Jake's son and Eric, and we discover how they are learning to know each other..
It's a great book, and Elsborg know how to flash out her characters in all directions. I like the worldsetting in this book, and I also like her writing style. THe plot is as good as it can be, and of course Elsborg had to do magic again.
I highly recommend this series because of all the great elements that are present.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great second book

    This was another great.

I loved the multiple POVs and the relationships that develops between all the men.

I really enjoyed Ben and Eric's love story. Eric's back story was hard to read at times, and I loved the way Ben tried his hardest to be there for him and show him everything he could be.

Like in the first book, I really loved how the supernatural part of the story intertwined with the love story.

The end was lovely and heartbreaking all at once. I can't wait for the next book
