Of Secrets and Wolves (Winsford Shifters Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 2,215 ratings

Rowan
My whole life, I’ve been taught to despise shifters. So when I’m hired to track two escaped convicts, I’m suddenly thrust into the world I hate—or thought I did. Yet I’m inexplicably drawn to the alpha of the pack whose land the convicts may be hiding on. He’s different than any shifter I've ever met—laid back and quick to laugh, caring and protective, and makes me feel complete for the first time in my life. As secrets are revealed, I start to wonder if everything I’ve been raised to believe was a lie, though it may not matter because it seems like someone wants us dead.

Quinn
I’m no stranger to prejudice from humans, but it’s different when Rowan comes into my life. Though I shouldn’t let myself be distracted, I’m captivated by him. At first, he’s stiff, fighting to keep his misconstrued beliefs intact, but as I break down the wall he’s created, I’m able to show him a place among the fun chaos of my pack. After one of my pack goes missing, it leaves Rowan and me racing to bring them home, but the only way we’re going to survive this is if Rowan learns to accept the bond that’s growing between us—a bond that could give us the strength to put aside our reservations and give in to what both of us want.

Of Secrets and Wolves
is an action-filled romance with a dash of comedy. It’s the first book in a series with a continuing storyline and an HFN.

Being a huge fan of shifters, I was excited to see how Alice would build her world. She didn't mess around, because of the overall prejudice against shifters, there was immediate conflict. I was a little wary about how much hatred Rowan seemed to have toward the shifter community. How was she ever going to make him fall in love with Quinn? Sure, the attraction was there but his hatred seemed to be very deeply ingrained. Too deeply ingrained. But this is a romance and she wielded her mighty keyboard, tossing them together over and over until they couldn't deny their bond any longer. I loved that she made us wait for them to realize they were mates. She teased us. Quinn kept teasing Rowan. Rowan kept running away. And coming back. And running away again. All while trying to figure out what's happening in the woods and why Quinn's pack is being threatened. Like any Alice Winters book, there's an element of humor that helps to lighten the seriousness of what's happening. This book had me glued to my kindle. So much so that as soon as I finished, I immediately downloaded the second book and started it. I'm so glad I don't have to wait for more of this story.

The roller coaster has come for Rowan and Quinn and the tumult and sweet bond go hand in hand with the circumstances they're dealt. We know they get an HEA, we know we'll likely see some ridiculousness, we know their road won't be easy, but how everything plays out is the thing to really dive into.

With book one we were introduced to the beginnings of the crazy and to two men who absolutely needed one another. There were light moments of humor and shenanigans with a spark and a bond. And then there were so many questions and so much intrigue that kept getting deeper and more dangerous with each passing chapter.

I think Ari is growing on me. At first I thought he was cute, but then he would go too far in his teasing and annoy me, and by the end I'm half in love with what he brings to the book. His loyalty to Quinn and his ability to lighten the mood and tone of the story is something this series needs and I'm sure his teasing shenanigans are only going to get worse. I can't wait to read his short story.

The danger and intrigue is definitely forefront in this one, though I have to say there are threads that keep getting dropped in the drama and I'm wondering how that will all work out. Overall I'm excited for where this may go and the depths we might achieve with Rowan and Quinn's evolution individually as well as together as they face some pretty evil characters.

This is probably one of my favorite Alice Winters series. I love ROWAN and Quinn the main characters and the side characters. This series has friendships, humor, suspense, action, romance, sex and unexpected twists. I was on the edge of my seat in some parts. I could tell Alice put her heart and soul into writing each book of this series. I do agree Alice seems to go a bit overboard off and on with some of her characters making them more cartoonish than "real". Think it could be toned down. Each book was a good length with great thought, creativity and depth. I did not want this series to end.

I often love Alice's work, but this just wasn't working for me. A lot of it is pacing in how the story does a lot of nothing conclusive. It feels like it seriously derailed from the original idea and morphed into something that I'm only going to really appreciate as I read on. And I will read this whole series, but it's off to a lackluster start. The story is, for the most part, very readable. Rowan's adorably clueless for the first half of the story and lovelorn for the second half. Quinn's a great Alpha character with a good pack dynamic. The moments of romance between Rowan and Quinn, though, feels so out of place with the more serious topics presented, though. Given that this book doesn't have an end and leaves much for the second book to cover, I wish that this installment had been more focused on establishing the relationship and then building up the action and mystery for the next installment. Instead we get too many conflicting moments of cutesy relationship building amid a situation that rapidly escalated into plot elements I never expected from the blurb. The stakes just kept getting raised in ways that didn't work for me, especially when it came to a cartoonishly evil villain like Mercer. I'm hopeful that the other books improve everything, especially with Emery's story looking very interesting and hopefully all the groundwork done here for the next book to just come on and deal with all the plot threads.

Just... Wow! This book is everything I was hoping for and so much more! Alice Winters is a freaking genius with words and I'm completely addicted to this new world she's created. Quinn is the snarkiest, most irreverent Alpha ever and yet he's absolutely devoted to his created pack. Rowan is the perfect compliment to Quinn, even when he can't quite reconcile to his shifter nature, but once he stops fighting his other side he and Quinn are just the perfect Alpha pair. I'm a little bit in love with Ari and his completely unfiltered mouth. I literally laughed out loud at parts and was on the edge of my seat for others. It does end with a HFN - sort of - but it fits within the parameters of the storyline. I can't wait to start the second book and I'm 100% recommending this series. Perfection!

I loved this book! Theres something about it that drew me in right away, and kept me hooked the entire duration. Its different than any other Alice Winters book, yet it has the same spark of humour and the charm we are used to with her! Quinn and Rowan had insane chemistry and were great main characters. They were different yet similar and I loved how they grew together as characters. All the side characters were great and id love to see a prequel about Ari. The plot was very interesting too! A little bit dark and very mysterious I was guessing the whole time and so curious about everything! I need another book ASAP! This was a great book to end January off right for me. 5 stars

1er roman de shifters d'Alice Winters et c'est une réussite. Un univers développé, des personnages travaillés et attachants, un rythme juste et, comme toujours avec Alice Winters, beaucoup d'humour. Hâte de lire la suite.

    What a Roller Coaster!

The resume already got my attention but I still could not realize how cool this book would be.

The plot is extremely rich, going from strong and solid family relationship, passing through society preconceived values and secret pharmaceutical plans and experiments.

Simply mix all these with true mate love stories and you will have this amazing series of books that I would absolutely recommend.

Thumbs up for the author’s creativity and fluent writing.

Alice Winters writes books that makes you laugh out loud and smile and stay glued to the pages.
This series is funny and has a strong suspense part. It might be a bit less hilarious than her Hitman series but - for those who knows this highly recommended series, we all know that Leeland is the most hilarious character ever - it's still full of funny and entertaining moments.
