Off the Record: A pro football, secret relationship romance (Nashville Fury Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 out of 5 stars 1,023 ratings

When you’re a female sports reporter, you have to work twice as hard. Prove your worth. Show people that you belong in the room.
The pressroom. Not the bedroom.
Oops. And there’s my first mistake.
In my defense, resisting Hunter McAvoy is easier said than done.
Professional football insiders call him the hottest up-and-coming coach in the league. Gossip columns rate him as the sexiest coach in pro sports.
But only I know that when he kisses you, you feel it in every cell in your body.
At first, I was strong enough to not fall for his Southern drawl or piercing blue eyes. But when a man who’s hot enough to be on the cover of fashion magazines praises your football knowledge while also telling you how beautiful you are?
Yeah…I was a goner.
There’s just one problem: Coaches dating reporters is forbidden.
It’s a conflict of interest for both sides. If either of our employers found out what we’re doing, we could both lose our jobs in an instant.
It’s stupid. Reckless. We’re putting everything we’ve worked for on the line.
But when you fall in love, you risk it all.
Even if you have to love in secret.

Off the Record is Book 1 in the Nashville Fury series. It features:

  • Secret relationship
  • Forbidden romance
  • Workplace romance
  • Close proximity
  • Coach and reporter
  • Pro football romance
  • Low angst

From the Author

When any reader asks me what my favorite book that I have written is, I will forever say "Off the Record." This is for many reasons. One, as a former sports writer, there is so much of myself in Sadie. Though I never had a secret relationship or a forbidden romance with a coach, for years I worked in a man's world. I lived with social media hate. I worked myself from dawn until dusk and never had a personal life. So in a sense, Sadie is the person I sometimes wish I became. I hope you enjoy her story with Hunter. It will always be my favorite.

Known for her witty sense of humor, Chelle Sloan is a former sports editor who after completing her Master’s degree in journalism, decided to become a romance author. You know, because that’s the normal path to writing happily ever afters.

An Ohio native, she’s fiercely loyal to Cleveland sports, is the owner of way too many — yet not enough — tumblers and will be a New Kids on the Block fan until the day she dies. She does her best writing at Panera, or anywhere that’s not her house.

When she’s not writing, she’s trying to learn to bake, fixing up her condo (badly and by watching YouTube videos), or falling in love with a book.

As for her own happily every after? Maybe one day...

    Bravo.

I really liked this book. The relationship between Hunter and Sadie is charming, cute and even mature. They fought for their relationship even when they didn't know they were in one.
I will surely read this author again, whom I thank for having left this book for free and thus allowing me to try her writing, so bravo.

✨I absolutely loved Sadie and Hunter. They were both super relatable and their relationship was adorable. I also really liked the twist on the normal sports romance, making it about a journalist and a coach. It did seem like at times I was being told about all these interesting things that happened after the fact, and I felt like I was missing out a little. A few parts were slow reading for me, but I think that goes back to my preference of reading through scenes instead of being told about them later. Overall, I really enjoyed this one. If you like sports romance, but are looking for a new spin, this sweet read should be just what you’re looking for.✨

Sadie Benson is a reporter for the Nashville Fury football team. She is great at her job and will stop at nothing to get the story out. Honestly, she loves her job more than pretty much anything else. Until she meets Hunter.

Hunter McAvoy is finally stepping out of his father’s football shadow by becoming the youngest offensive coach in football history. He wants to prove to himself, the team, and the fans that he was the right choice. What he doesn’t need is a distraction in the form of a beautiful reporter.

Sadie and Hunter know their relationship shouldn’t happen, but their feelings become too strong to ignore. So they decide to try to make it work without telling anyone, because neither Sadie or Hunter want to sacrifice their careers. Unfortunately, keeping their relationship a secret is harder than they expected.

The best part of this very good book is Sadie’s running commentary in her head when she’s trying to get her mind out of the gutter. Hilarious! She’s such a great character. Strong and smart. She has to be as a woman sports writer.

Hunter is to be respected. He’s a man on a mission. He’s handsome and caring and a fantastic secret boyfriend.

I love the way they navigate this complicated relationship. Some low level angst, but not enough to go from funny to sappy. The ending is great!!

I enjoyed the authors writing style and character development.

I stumbled upon this book on Amazon and the blurb sounded good - I love a good sports romance and when I find a smartly written one like this - chef kiss! This isn’t just a good sports romance it’s fantastic!

The relationship between Sadie and Hunter is complex because their jobs are a conflict of interest for each other, but they both feel more than attracted to each other so they agree to secretly date for six months. I loved how they could laugh and have fun, be supportive of each other, and understood each about the challenges and workload of each others jobs so easily, and the attraction between them was combustible.

The hiccups in their relationship were believable and organic, no contrived angst to torment readers before a happy ending.

I will definitely be reading more books by Chelle!

    4 1/2 stars
Firstly I loved that this sports romance didn’t involve the sports players, it revolved around the part of the industry that probably isn’t written about nearly as much – the coaching staff and sports reporters. This is my first @chellsloan book and it certainly won’t be my last.
So much happens but the story isn’t rushed or lacking detail, everything that happened in their journey had time and detail and development. Hunter and Sadie are such strong characters but they aren’t without their flaws, demons and vulnerabilities. Both of them are working so hard to excel in their careers, Sadie to be respected in a male dominated industry and Hunter to be seen for his skills rather than who his father is, so deciding to see if their relationship will go anywhere is a big risk. Their relationship faces so many hurdles which are believable rather than over the top or unrealistic and makes the story so hard to put down. There are so many little parts of this story that I love – Sadie listing gross things to change her thoughts, Hunter’s physical reaction when Sadie talked football, Hunter’s gentlemanly manners especially the extended epilogue, their steamy chemistry but also their curl up together and watch Netflix moments. This is a brilliant start to the Nashville Fury series.

Okay, let me first start this by saying I am not a big football fan. I follow it enough I guess but never really drawn to it. I picked up this book to read strictly based off Chelle and her social media presence. Because I thought damn, this is a woman I want to be friends with, drink with, book club with and genuinely enjoy her interactions. That being said, as a romance author myself I am usually a very supportive yet harsh critic. I have nothing but great things to say though. Not only is Hunter dreamy and embodies that sexy guy next door we all not so secretly crave but his character in general is a great secondary lead. I say secondary lead because well...come on. Chelle created a badass, break down barriers, hardworking, power house woman. She is a true lead character and easily one of the best female characters I have read in the last 10 years. She breaks the norm. The wit, humor, charm, sex appeal, romance and sexual tension build up to the climax...1000000000/10 would recommend.

Just like Reformation, I loved this book! I absolutely love the way that Chelle writes and the characters she creates. I love the concept of this story, and the fact that the characters go on real dates and have consistent adult convos.
My only little wish is that the resolution was a little less neatly wrapped up. I appreciated that one of the main characters says that, after the grand gesture, they had a long conversation about their future, but I would have LOVED to have actually seen that conversation. It would've made the forgiveness a little more meaningful, especially after the fantastic final climax/conflict the couple faced.

First book I have read by this author and its a good read for those who like romance and a sexy story. Sadie lives for her job as a sports reporter and she stands out as not just being good at her job but also she is the only female so gets a lot of stick from the men. She gets headline news when luck has her in a cafe bar when the handsome Hunter walks in. She thinks he is gorgeous and knows who he is. Hunter flirts with her and cant believe he is in the news the next day when he has been interviewed for the coaching job. He cant resist her and their jobs mean they shouldnt meet but he treats her as his soul mate but there is always a time when a wrong conclusion is made and their love is put to the test.

I was craving a fun sports romance and that’s exactly what I got with Off The Record. It was such a great time.

Featuring a sports journalist and coach, I enjoyed the conflict surrounding the romance a lot. Sadie is constantly bombarding with men in the industry assuming her knowledge in sports is subpar. Hunter, newly hired by the Nashville Fury football team, is officially the youngest offensive coordinator in league history. Both continually feeling the pressure to prove their abilities, I really enjoyed the way these two uplifted and challenged each other.

Due to conflicts of interest, Sadie and Hunter agree to hide their blooming relationship. Their cozy nights at home—many ending up in the bedroom—were so sweet. Despite her love for Hunter developing, it was great to see Sadie continue to publish the truth, never feeling the need to apologize for doing her job. She stays true to herself the entire way through.
