One to Six, Buckle to Sticks (Grasshopper Lawns) Kindle Edition
Save over $3.00 by buying the first three books in this popular series bundled into an omnibus version
Ideal for anyone who has read and enjoyed one of the later books out of sequence, or claimed the short story offer on the http://elegsabiff.com website and decided to try the series. The books are whodunits in the cozy tradition, fun to read, with engaging characters and nicely-plotted murders.
The four main characters are in late middle age, and are enjoying early retirement with gusto: Grasshopper Lawns is a retirement village in Scotland for people over fifty five who have had interesting lives and want to continue to do so. It got even more interesting when the murders started...
The first book, One Two Buckle My Shoe, introduces golden girls Edge Cameron and Vivian Oliver, lifelong friends and now neighbours, who aren't at all surprised that Betsy Campbell got murdered. They're definitely intrigued, but in the end solving the murder requires joining forces with the outrageously charming William Robertson and a sardonic new neighbour, Donald MacDonald
Three Four Knock On My Door puts the amateur sleuths back to work, as strangers come knocking, and not even Death is exactly who he seems to be. Problem dog Maggie inadvertently lends a paw in solving the murders.
Five Six Pick Up Sticks dives gleefully into the deep end of internet dating for senior singles, where the predators lurk. Looking for love has proved a dead end for some, and Police Scotland want to know why. Sergeant Kirsty Cameron's Aunt Edge is ideal to play the face of their investigation, and she'll be monitored at all times. Nothing can go wrong...
The books are fun, light-hearted, fiendishly plotted and true to their whodunit formula: every clue is tucked away in clear sight, so the armchair detective knows exactly as much as the characters do and can solve the mystery for themselves. Game on.

About the author

After fifteen years in Scotland Elizabeth Lamprey upped sticks in 2017 and moved to the Costa Tropical in Spain - proof of the dangers of thorough research, which had taken her there several times.
Her usual style is cozy and she has said, when asked to compare her books to others, "The Hamish Macbeth series is probably the closest with a Scottish setting, and the gentle rambling is a bit No.1 Ladies Detective Agency..."
She also says of herself 'One of the best, absolute best, things about being an autumn rose, is that I've pretty much paid my family dues, done my bit, seen out my responsibilities and now it's my time. Time to live out dreams, tick those patient items on the to-do list, take on new challenges - time to seize the day.'
As EJ Lamprey she wrote the Grasshopper Lawns series of whodunits (set in Scotland), but also writes a bit of SF as Joanna Lamprey. She also, under the tongue-in-cheek name of Clarissa Rodgers-Briskleigh, writes novels and how-to books about the constantly expanding world of mature singles, a subject she has researched with fascination and enthusiasm since Five Six Pick Up Sticks, in which Edge Cameron deliberately joins a singles website to attract the attention of a genuine ladykiller.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 20, 2014Format: KindleVerified PurchaseThis omnibus comprises the first three novellas in E J Lamprey's Grasshopper Lawns cozy mystery series. The stories are set in a "retirement" village near Edinburgh. Yes, the residents of the village are in their mid-50s and older, but they are retired only in the sense that they don't drive to a job every day. The premise of the village, set up by a wealthy benefactor, is that each resident be financially stable, in good health, and, the most important factor for the stories that they be "interesting." Interesting indeed they are. There are folk who have been opera singers, science-fiction authors, actor/ choreographers, spies and private detectives. They most assuredly are not sitting in their rockers tapping their feet to big-band music, and reminiscing about those good old days when TVs were small and transmitted only black-and-white pictures. Rather, they are comfortable with and readily use
iPads and MP3s, are very cosmopolitan and can enjoy dating one another. The main group in the stories are two men and two women, who becme involved in solving a murder, and proceed from one story to the next, deepening their relationships , frequently through the course of solving more murders. Their characters are not caricatures, but realistic people with virtues and foibles, who become close friends, looking out for one another over the course of the three stories here.
The plots are well-constructed and airtight, no authorial cheating, and serve well all the sturctures of cozy mysteries. Given the brevity of the novellas, there is a heady mixture of suspects, clues, motives and leads. These are no armchair detectives. They poke about the environs of Edinburgh (whose geography is well-represented) when required, and Lamprey delivers very adept side-glances at their ongoing lives and interests when they're not not solving mysteries. The murders are not simple, but Lamprey is excellent at laying out what is known and unknown at every step, and the reader never feels either bored or cheated.
Finally , Lamprey is an excellent stylist, building on a base of clear exposition , well-leavened with good insights about details of the residents' crafts in their former occupations, and wise, well-written observations on human behavior exhibited by people of any age.
Highly recommended for devotees of classic murder mysteries, especially those set firmly in modern times.

This is a 3 in 1 book. The first 3 stories in this "cosy" mystery series, which is brilliant! The best I've ever read in this particular genre.
Set in an upscale retirement community in Scotland, the main character, Edge (short for her middle name), her friends Vivian, William, and Donald solve mysteries that generally come their way via Edge' s niece, Kristy, a police officer.
New friends and their animals are introduced with each story, but the stories are written so well that you have no trouble keeping up with friends, neighbors, pets, etc.
I plan on reading the entire series, and the author is busy expanding the series as we speak. It's wickedly fun, and the clues are great, but pay attention so "you'll know who done it."
