On the Rocks: An Age Gap, Small Town Romance (Becker Brothers) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 5,477 ratings

I'm the mayor's daughter. He's the town bad boy. I'm engaged to someone else... but my heart belongs to him.

Noah Becker is nothing but trouble.

That’s what Mama told me when I was a kid, kicking his pew in church and giggling at the games we’d play. It’s what the town said when his father died and the Becker brothers went wild. And it’s on repeat in my mind the day I walk into the whiskey distillery where he works to buy a wedding gift for my fiancé.

He's trouble.
Dirty, sweaty,
rude trouble.

No matter how many times I repeat it, I can’t escape Noah in our small Tennessee town. And the more I run into him, the more he infuriates me. Because he sees what no one else does. He sees me—the real me. The me I’m not sure I’m allowed to be.

I’m Ruby Grace Barnett, the mayor’s daughter. Soon to be a politician’s wife, just like Mama and Daddy always wanted.

Soon to fulfill my family’s legacy, just like I always knew I would.

Until the boy everyone warned me about makes me question everything, like whether the wedding I’m planning is one I even want.

Everyone says Noah Becker is nothing but trouble.
If only I had listened.

Bestselling Author Kandi Steiner delivers a gripping small town country romance about a whiskey barrel raiser and the Mayor's daughter he can't resist. An Amazon Bestseller and Book 1 in the gripping Becker Brothers series.

"Kandi Steiner mixes together the
perfect blend of heart and heat in On The Rocks -- a small town, Southern romance that'll have you thirsty for more Becker Brothers!" -- Author Dee Lagassee
"The chemistry between these two was so steamy, I felt like I couldn't bear to read another page if they didn't finally kiss. Kandi is amazing at that, writing a love so powerful, a chemistry so hot, that it just burns from the pages.
It was heartbreaking, it was agonizing, but it was so worth the wait." -- NJ Penny Book Reviews
"I fell hard for this town, for the people, because
there's nothing I love more than a small town novel that sucks you in and makes you feel like you're a resident not a visitor." --Patricia Rohrs, Words We Love book blog

"I have been a fan of Kandi and her books for about 4 years now. Every book she writes, I am hooked! This book is no different. I love how when she writes, you can picture the scenes so vivid in your mind, the characters, what they are wearing, their facial expressions, the scenes around them. PICK THIS BOOK UP!" -- Jacey Becker, advance reading copy recipient
"
Just when you think you know how a story might end, Kandi changes direction, leaving you breathless. This isn't a book to shoot straight down but better to read, reflect, and meditate on what matters most to you." -- Jessica Perez, advance reading copy recipient
"
I am so obsessed with Noah Becker. I want to have his babies. Never have I read such a kind hearted fictional boy that truly wants that all consuming love of an impossible woman. He is so kind and loving and he loves his momma and his brothers and his town and I just want to hug him and pet his hair." -- Laura, Goodreads Reviewer
"Kandi Steiner once again proves that she can make you laugh, cry, and swoon at the same time. On The Rocks was
so much more than I expected." -- Jan Cassi, Goodreads Reviewer
"On The Rocks is
superbly written, skillfully crafted and 100% addictive!" -- Chelé, 4 the Love of Books
"Steiner nailed everything about the genre that I love.
Undeniable chemistry, fantastic banter, a lovable girl next door and a swoony, sexy hero that makes my heart beat a little faster. I am absolutely obsessed with these two." -- Sasha Erramouspe, advance reading copy recipient
"THE QUEEN OF ANGST HAS DONE IT AGAIN." -- Kenzie Mooney, advance reading copy recipient
"She's done it again, and once you've had a taste of these Becker brothers it'll leave you burning for more. Five golden whiskey stars!" -- Author Kathryn Andrews
"Some authors tell a story, but a truly talented author creates a world. A world that assaults the reader's senses and entrenches her so completely in the story that the characters are forever in her heart. With beautiful sunsets, close-knit families and a colorful cast of supporting characters, this is the world Steiner creates, and I never wanted to leave! I loved every aspect of this book, down to the smallest detail -- from the gossipy citizens and a loveable, hilarious, meddling octogenarian to the most memorable wedding the good folks of Stratford have ever seen.
With a dose of angst, a sprinkle of humor and a great big bunch of heart, this book held me captive from beginning to end." -- BookAddict
"Page by page, Kandi builds a world deep in the heart of Tennessee, where whiskey flows, and the difference between Miss and Ma'am is prominent.
I knew from the moment I read the synopsis, that this book was going to be one of those that stuck with me, and I wasn't wrong." -- Passionately Plotted

An alumna of the University of Central Florida, Kandi graduated with a double major in Creative Writing and Advertising/PR with a minor in Women’s Studies. She started writing back in the 4th grade after reading the first Harry Potter installment. In 6th grade, she wrote and edited her own newspaper and distributed to her classmates. Eventually, the principal caught on and the newspaper was quickly halted, though Kandi tried fighting for her “freedom of press.” She took particular interest in writing romance after college, as she has always been a die hard hopeless romantic, and likes to highlight all the challenges of love as well as the triumphs.

When Kandi isn’t writing, you can find her reading books of all kinds, talking with her extremely vocal cat, and spending time with her friends and family. She enjoys live music, traveling, anything heavy in carbs, beach days, movie marathons, craft beer and sweet wine — not necessarily in that order.

On The Rocks is a well penned heartfelt story of Noah and Ruby Grace. During their rocky journey, your achy heart will be right along side of theirs while they're controlled by the puppeteer of life. The seemingly untouchable life that's just within their reach if only they could just reach out and grab hold of the strings that bind them without all of lifes unsuspecting yanks and tugs that keep them from getting what they want.Your heartstings will be played with. They will be loosened sending your heart soaring when they discover what it's like to experience and feel desire for the life and love they've truly longed for. But suddenly when the strings are tightened beyond control, it will constrict and leave you begging for release. This Kandi Land journey is one you must experience and take a shot at on your own to see just where your heart will land. However, I'm certain it'll be right next to mine.

“Anyone can lead an ordinary life, child,” she’d said to me one lazy afternoon. “But the best adventures are reserved for the ones brave enough to be extraordinary.”

First I have to say that I am normally not a fan of the more straight forward romances.....meaning I need more than just a little angst to fulfill my cold dead heart, I need the dark and twisted side of love. I also tend to stay far away from "Southern" romance because they usually depict my "home" inaccurately and think adding in as many ya'll's as possible makes the character authentic. But the cover of this one kept dragging me in and when the blurb promised a bad boy and whiskey.....well it was just enough to make me take my first shot with this author. Im happy to report that it was worth the risk and blew all my misconceptions up in my face.

"He was a lightning storm, fun to watch from afar but dangerous to dance with. I wasn’t going to toy with that line of danger."

Told in dual POV and set in a small Tennessee town known for its famous whiskey, this story is about finding true love in the one person you aren't supposed to. Its about risks and sacrifice, about family and betrayal, about love and being selfish for happiness. It is a standalone, although there are promises for other standalone installments featuring other Becker brothers.

"My heart was trained to love whiskey long before it ever learned how to love a woman."

Noah Becker has spent his life around the whiskey that made this town famous and the distillery that is responsible for his fathers death. He is one of the best barrel raisers in the business and has devoted his life to securing his family's legacy in the Scooter Whiskey history books while being the best son to his mother and there for all his brothers. His dreams are simple---he just wants the love his parents had, a few kids, a dog, and a modest home. The problem? The kind of love he wants requires the perfect woman for him....one he hasn't seemed to find in his endless string of one night stands. All that changes when Ruby Grace shows up at the distillery looking to buy her fiance the perfect wedding gift.....

"You’re not meant to be a puppet in some man’s sideshow, Ruby Grace. You’re meant to be his entire world."

Ruby Grace Barnett, mayors daughter and wife to a future politician, is living the life she has been groomed to live. So what if she has to put her plans and dreams on the backburner? She knows that is part of the job marrying her handsome fiance Anthony. She finds herself back in her small town planning a wedding that is just 6 weeks away. She never imagined the one person that would have her questioning everything is the same boy who she played games in the pews on Sunday mornings. The more time she spends with Noah, the more she sees that maybe this isn't "it"....but the Becker boys are trouble and this is what most little girls dream of right? She isn't so sure anymore, but when secrets come to light and loyalties are tested Ruby Grace must make a choice.....one that has consequences no matter what she chooses.

“If you were mine, Ruby Grace, your dreams wouldn’t come second to anything.”

Noah and Ruby Grace's story does end with a HFN ending but with plenty of room to expand within the other brothers stories. If you think this will be a simple romance from start to finish, you are in for a surprise because there are a few twists you won't see coming.

"If he was a dream, I would sleep, just so I could keep him a little longer. I’d sleep, and maybe — just maybe — I’d wake on a day where I got to keep him forever."

Overall, I was very pleasantly surprised by both this author and this book. It had a slow burn that was paced just right, perfect for building up the tension while making me crave more. It has so many dynamic elements that made me eager to know anything I could about almost every character. The angst is definitely present in this one as is a few pretty heartbreaking moments as well. Kandi was able to authentically capture a Southern town and its citizens without making them look backwoods and uneducated. She created an entire universe surrounding the Becker brothers and Scooter Whiskey that makes you CRAVE more. If this author's other books are anywhere near as fantastically written as this one is.....well count me a FAN!

“Whatcha thinking about, Noah Becker?”“Just you, Ruby Grace,” I mused, meeting her gaze again. “Always you.”

On the Rocks is that small town, slow burn, age gap, swoony hero book that you didn't know you needed. And it burns so good. Kind of like the Scooter whiskey that Noah barrels there in Tennessee. :)

Ruby Grace, the Mayor's daughter, has just become engaged and comes back to her small town in Tennessee to put her wedding together. When she visits Scooter Whiskey to buy her husband-to-be a barrel of whiskey, she runs into one of the towns local bad boys, Noah. He's the good ole boy that loves the ladies, but doesn't settle down. But what people don't see is that he loves hard and he's a family man at heart. He's just waitin for the right woman to saddle up.

I have to admit, at first I was a little concerned we were getting another book about an unavailable woman and the guy that was going to steal her away. It sounded a bit familiar. Fortunately, it wasn't just that. It was a book about friendship, family and pursuing ones dreams while being a team. Supporting one another as opposed to one person supporting the other and not getting any support in return. Ruby Grace was that person. She was just supporting her fiancé in his bid to become the next political icon. But he never once asked her what made her happy. What made her click. And Noah recognized that on day one. He was the swoony hero to ask her what SHE wanted. What would make HER happy. He got me from the get go. Literally taking the shirt off his back for the comfort of another. He was a true small town gentleman. But Ruby Grace couldn't see what was right in front of her. Her young 19 year old mind may have been clouded over. But sometimes it takes the words from a wise and aged person to make you see the light.

"Anyone can lead an ordinary life, child. But the best adventures are reserved for the ones brave enough to be extraordinary."

Ruby Grace and Noah had an undeniable connection. There was a bit of push and pull when it came to the two of them, but it was obvious they had chemistry. A beautiful and radiant spark. Ruby Grace's personality just shined from the pages. She's the type of woman you appreciate and want to know more about. She shined. She had a love for others that was so strong you could feel it.

"You are the heroine just as much as he is the hero."

And Noah. What can I say about Noah? I could feel his heart. I could see his smile. I could grip onto his soul through the words. You could feel his emotions literally dripping from the pages. He was still a man's man, but he also loved his mama and his brothers like any good southern boy should. He is the man you want to be yours. He is what book boyfriends are all about.

"I just see you with my eyes." "No, No, you see me with your soul. And I feel you with mine."

Ahhhhh....This book was just beautiful and emotional and set the stage for the 4 Becker brothers. Although it was slow to get to our HEA, I enjoyed the tension and chemistry between the two main characters. I also enjoyed the wise and sage advice from the elders of the book. Some of the characters I could have strangled a bit, but that's to be expected. Kandi Steiner took us on a journey of self discovery and love in a small town where everyone's in your business and she did it with finesse.

Grab on to this book and enjoy a young woman's discovering her worth in the world and the man that will give it to her willingly. It's a fun yet emotional journey that will definitely please the romantic in you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tennessee, whiskey, and summer heat make for a fantastic read
Reviewed in Canada on July 26, 2019
**I did sort of an acrostic style poem review. An acrostic poem is a style of poetry using the first letters of a word or words to describe what you are talking about. For example, I used the title On The Rocks. With each letter I told a bit about the book and what I thought of the book.

On a hot summer day in June a man and a woman’s relationship is on the rocks and whiskey is not far behind
Noah Becker is a whiskey distillery worker. He loves his whiskey, it’s the first thing he thinks of when

    Tennessee comes to mind
He thinks whiskey and his family is all he needs, but it isn’t until a girl or should I say a woman, with flaming red hair, strawberry smoothie lips, “and heels that made her legs stretch on for days” (his words not mine) that makes him rethink
Everything. (Just one word, sums it up, don’t you think?)

Ruby Grace Barnett is the mayor’s daughter and about a decade younger than Noah, (she used to kick his pew from behind in Church and have a crush on him)
Oh and one small detail I forgot to mention...she is engaged to a politician she thinks
Cares for her and, maybe he does but not like Noah. Noah sees the real Ruby Grace.
Knows what she really wants to do with her life and what matters to her most.
Stubbornness is one thing that makes this an “on the rocks” romance and so many other things including whiskey, (can’t forget about that good ol’ whiskey ya’ll) that if you want to find out, I recommend you read this wonderful story that has beautiful writing that made me highlight multiple pages in my kindle!

Ah, and don’t let me forget there is also a great side character! Need I say more? We book lovers love great side characters and this one was no exception. She made me laugh and learn. The best kind of side character I think!

***This book tells you how to drink whiskey properly so that it actually tastes good. I guess when I try whiskey for the first time, I will know how to drink it and I will not throw it back like a shot.

On the rocks is my first book of Kandi and I am glad I got hold of her books. Banter between Ruby Grace and Noah is everything. Ruby Grace is young beautiful inside out and Noah is old and oh very sexy. They shouldn’t get attracted to each other given their circumstances but they fell for each other anyway. I love both of them and I love becker’s family. Cannot wait to find out about others .

4.0 out of 5 stars a beautiful series of 4 books
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 23, 2021
This whole series was delightful and I recommend reading them all in order.
#1 On the Rocks - a sweet story about 2 people who get the wrong impression of each other when they first meet, but are clearly perfect for each other - it just takes a series of missed opportunities and mistakes for it to all fall into place.
#2 Neat - this story is much more passionate and steamy than the first. The couple find a passionate love but that their families struggle to support and leads to difficult decisions over loyalty. I enjoyed this even more than the first book.
#3 Manhattan - this a friends to lovers story but it has its own unique take on this idea.
#4 Old Fashioned - this is the final book and the love story is tender and deals with racial identity and domestic abuse. It also concludes the mystery of the death of Mr Becker senior - this mystery is woven through all of the books with little clues dropped throughout the series (do not just read book 4 because you will miss the gentle build up and subtle clues). There is no plot twist, and by the time the mystery is unveiled I had pretty much worked out the details, however this is not a criticism, I enjoyed piecing the clues together and anticipating the ending.
Need to make a mention of Betty - this character in her 80s is just delightful and has some of the best lines (book 3 especially) and I just loved this character!
