'In her debut women's novel "On Turtle Beach", Lynne Fisher knits astory elaborate as Oriental lace and deep as the Mediterranean Sea...

I am happy to have discovered such a gifted story teller as Lynne Fisherand I really loved her characterization which was full of detail andwell-balanced. I enormously enjoyed the setting, the vividly describedscenery, the plot and the psychological background of her characters...

With her debut book Lynne Fisher sets a high standard and I am certainlylooking forward to reading her next novel. And I recommend it to alllovers of fiction as "On Turtle Beach" has many treasures to offer!'(from Galya Varna - Book Reviewer, author of 'Dreams You Thought Were Lost'collection of poems, artist, and creator/editor of 'Doorway to Art'magazine. galyavarna.wordpress.com)

From the Author

On Turtle Beach is my debut novel, and it was inspired by my interest in human nature and family relationships, and by my love of the naturalworld, where the novel's setting of Dalyan in Turkey became a specialplace in my heart.

I often used to wonder how my sister and Iwould get on if we went on holiday together, just the two of us, and Iasked other women how they felt about this situation too. Most seemed to flinch at the idea, coming from the premise that they and their sisterwere too different, were like chalk and cheese and would probably bicker or come to blows. I thought it would be exciting to explore this.Holidaying in Dalyan, Turkey, gave me my beautiful setting for thestory, and the themes came in from there. I thoroughly enjoyed writingthis novel and sincerly hope readers enjoy it too.

I got pulled in by the promise of mystery in this novel, but I stayed for the psychological tension. I loooove psychological tension. Any novel that digs deep into a character via the past, the shadow side of the personality, or some other intricate layering of experience and behavior, has got me hooked. Needless to say, On Turtle Beach hooked me right from the first page.

The story begins innocently enough, with two sisters going off to enjoy a holiday together and to “get to know each other better.” Although they have very different personalities and seem to clash on every level, their dying father requested that they make the effort with each other, hence the holiday they’re on now. Things go downhill until the sisters hit a crisis point that blows the past wide open, and that past is filled with toxic secrets.

I was mesmerized by the way the sisters were written. Both Rhea and Lucy felt so incredibly real to me. I felt like I got such a detailed look into the way each of their minds worked. At times the incredible level of character detail reminded me of Anne Tyler—one of my all-time favorite authors—because the writing brought across so clearly these tiny, seemingly mundane character details that actually give brilliant glimpses into the depths of the character’s personality. The setting was also a huge part of the novel for me. The sisters take their holiday in Turkey, and I felt like I was quite literally THERE. The sounds, the smells, the natural landscape was described so vividly, I can still see it in my mind, and I have no doubt that if I traveled there I would be greeted with what now feels like a familiar place.

On Turtle Beach has my vote for the best literary fiction novel I’ve read this year. Brilliant work.

She had me at the first hint of a family secret and did not disappoint. With a complex tale of sisters and secrets, set in a tropical paradise, the author takes you right into the story on all levels. With a gift for description, you can not only see the scenery, but can also smell it and feel it. Just like on a deeper level, you can experience the impact of the dark secret on the two sisters' lives, both before and after it is revealed. I was struck by the power of a secret to direct our lives, as individuals and in relationship to others. So in addition to enjoying the entertaining tale, I was left to ponder the impact of secrets in my own life. And to examine my relationship with my own sister with this in mind. We live most of the time not in reality, but in the stories we tell ourselves and the stories others tell us about what is happening in our lives. So this is a book that not only tells a great story that will keep you turning pages well after you meant to be asleep, but also lingers after the book is finished, inviting you to consider some of the deeper questions of life. I read lots of books that I enjoy and then forget. I won't forget this one.

Liked the writing. Liked the plot. But the exhausting histrionics and bickering became too much after a while. At times, they both came off childish and churlish, taking away any sympathy for them. Wanted to like them more.

This has all the elements of a great holiday read. Family secrets, intrigue, relationships, transformation, a gentle romance, a wonderfully woven story-line, adventure, danger, excitement, some exquisitely poetic prose. A woman's book, with a depth of understanding of emotions and how they drive us to do and say things. If you're off to Dalyan on the Turkish coast this is for you. If you're not you'll be wanting to book a holiday there. If you love snorkeling and swimming you'll be experiencing being in the water. You can tell its written by an artist as its full of pictures painted with words.. the plants, the colours, the heat, the effect on the senses, all vividly described. As an artist I found the difficulties that the artist sister Lucy was going through very familiar and when I came to the end I went straight into my studio and started creating. An inspiring book.

A great read with engaging characters and a story that makes you just want to keep reading. The relationship between the two sisters (the main characters) had me laughing in parts and rolling my eyes in others. The setting, Dalyan in Turkey was beautifully described and made perfect reading material for the recent hot weather, although I daresay I'll be giving this another read in the winter months to cheer myself up and to remind me what sunshine is like.
Family, relationships, life and everything in between!

4.0 out of 5 stars A promising debut
Reviewed in India on November 17, 2017
With more than half a dozen debuts that I’ve read this year, ‘On Turtle Beach’ by Lynne Fisher stood out of all of them and strengthened my faith on debut novels/books. Not very often do we come across promising debuts, more often than not the attempt in a debut looks like a novice attempt, which it is but the point is it shouldn’t reflect that. I’m nowhere demotivating anyone out there, I’m no one to do that, but we all need to understand one thing – as a reader, I know reading consumes a lot of time and if you want the reader to not to regret the time spent on your book and further expect to read your future works, make that first-time count; and as a writer, I know how important it is to be able to build a loyal audience, an audience that one can lose even before winning.

Back on ‘On Turtle Beach’. This book which, in the first glance, looks like a family drama, which it is, is also a book on adventures, adventures of Rhea and (mostly) Lucy in Dalyan. Ranging from hiking to snorkeling, Lynne has got successful in providing a vivid picture of these adventures through her words. I myself haven’t ever lived such adventures but this book expanded my imagination and made me experience them virtually. The depths of research that Lynne must have had done while or before writing this book, gets reflected in the detailing and descriptions in the book.

Now, the sisters – Rhea, the elder, and Lucy, the younger one. As much as possible and much closer to the reality, both the sisters, even being related by blood, were yin and yang. I’ve hardly ever seen siblings who are similar. Mostly, if one is white, the other is black. (Please don’t take the colors literally.) Lucy, who is an artist – a painter, and Rhea, who is into corporate and an aspiring entrepreneur, which she accepts later in the story, are reconciled by their deceased father’s last wish.

But a secret, a secret between the elder daughter and the father is one of the key factors that keep the reader hooked till the ending chapters. Lynne took good advantage of keeping the secret masked and bringing it up here and there frequently. For one it acted as a reminder, provided the reader had forgotten, and secondly, it pushed the reader to dive further and further into the depths of the book.

Though book had two main characters – Rhea and Lucy, there had been a couple of other minor characters as well, of which June , though an evil character, helped in harmonizing the sisters’ bond in various ways, which without her couldn’t have happened. Along with the main characters, all the characters are beautifully explored.

A crucial element – show and not tell – is also well used by Lynne. For instance, in the initial phase of the story, I felt for Lucy and found Rhea a staunch and too strong headed with little to do with feelings. But as I went deeper into the story I realized that Rhea is as sensitive as Lucy, perhaps more practical, but she, too, is soft. A situation where Rhea was found reminiscing about her childhood beach days, it shows that she, too, was considerate towards Lucy, their parents.

As for a debut, there had been remarkably low technical issues. Only at a few places did I have to take a pause and re-read a sentence because it felt a bit edgy. Also, Lynne has used variety of sentence structures with varied length. Long (beautiful or witty) sentences are my weakness and you will get to see a lot of them in here. Yes, witty too.
In a book of almost 500 pages, you cannot not expect detailing. But given so, detailing looks pleasant only if done well and Lynne did so like a pro.

There were certain phrases and sentences that felt so true to my ear. Like,

"That was the paradox of being an artist, any kind of artist - self expression, but also needing some degree of appreciation."

Now, how true, honest and vulnerable was that?

Major part (which comes up to 85%) of the book is the story of both the sisters being on a two-week holiday in Dalyan. How the confrontations, fights and arguments with each other bring Rhea and Lucy closer and unmasks the long-hidden secret of Rhea and her father is an interesting journey with lots of focus on the ongoing adventurous activities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Poetically written, absorbing story of two sisters on a life-changing holiday
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 29, 2018
The first thing to say is that this book has an incredible sense of place, thanks to the rich and vivid sensory descriptions. I have been to this region of Turkey, though not Dalyan itself, and it evoked many memories for me. I could feel the languorous heat, the ecstasy and freedom of swimming in the sea, and the wonderful variation of landscapes and wildlife. The writing is lyrical, with an artist’s eye for colour and texture, as well as a writer’s observation of human behaviour.

The characters of the sisters were so skilfully drawn. I am the same age as the younger sister Lucy and I identified with a lot of their mid-life dilemmas. I related to both of them, despite them being very different, almost as if they represented competing aspects of my personality – the desire for adventure versus the need for security. The complexities of sibling relationships and their ambivalent feelings for each other made the story very engaging.

I loved that the author took her time creating atmosphere and exploring the interactions between the sisters, while slowly building the tension right up until the dark family secret is revealed – a scene so tense that it left me breathless. The other people on the holiday were equally fascinating. Brian and June were instantly familiar to me and were a great a way to introduce some humour while also, in June’s case, being rather sinister. I also liked the Turkish characters, Hasim in particular, who was also recognisable and believable without being a stereotype.

I thoroughly enjoyed this and look forward to reading more from Lynne.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved and hated this in equal measure (no plot spoilers)
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 2, 2018
Ok, so here goes...... Whatever you are about to read about my thoughts on this book, I would recommend anyone and everyone to read it.

I honestly loved and hated this in equal measures. All the exerts about Dalyan itself was written beautifully and really encapsulated the Dalyan that I know and love. However, the characters were awful! They came across as rude and obnoxious and I really couldn't relate to them! In all good stories there is usually a character whether a goodie or a baddie that you end up rooting for. Here this was not the case!!!

Now I know this is an easy read and perfect for holiday reading but I think there were two more points here! Firstly it came across as extremely negative about the turtle hospital on Iztuzu beach. This would have been such a wonderful opportunity to let the world know the amazing work that Kaptun June and her foundation do! Yes it is sad and difficult to see injured and distressed turtles.... I cry every time I go there, but without them, the turtles would die. Secondly the "old woman" who rows the boat is a real person and not a fictional character, "Meena Mumma" as I know her is so lovely and friendly and welcoming and not the rude person she was portrayed as.

Please do read this book and make your own mind up!!! Better still, get out to Dalyan and see it's stunning beauty for yourself! And whilst you are there, nip in to the turtle hosptal and see all the amazing work they do there!!! 💜💜💜

3.0 out of 5 stars OK, but middle of the road and predictable.

Quite well written, although too many repetitive phrases, would have been much improved by a professional editor. Neither of the main characters is particularly likeable, and you wonder what on earth is wrong with them, they are so weird about dealing with things. But in the end you don't care whether they sort themselves out or not. I did read it to the end, but I probably wouldn't have bothered if I could have got my kindle to sync where I was (middle of the Atlantic) and download something else. :D

Turtle Beach was a fabulously exciting and descriptive read , full of adventure, anticipation and intriguing relationships which I very much related too. The authors descriptive phrases made me feel I was actually there in person , and had met the characters personally. The Author was also able to convey the vulnerability of her characters through her highly creative and colourful descriptive phrases. As a reader I was immersed in the characters lives and looked forward to reading the next page just to find out how they all interlinked with each other. A very very pleasant , enjoyable book that I looked forward to reading and would highly recommend to take you away to a place with sun, sand , sea and warmth and intrigue , escaping from cold grey, dismal Scottish weather.
