From the Author
Eridu was long considered the earliest city in southern Mesopotamia, and is still today argued to be the oldest city in the world. Located 12 km southwest of Ur, Eridu was the southernmost of a conglomeration of Sumerian cities that grew about temples, almost in sight of one another. In Sumerian mythology, Eridu was originally the home of Enki, who was considered to have founded the city, later known by the Akkadians as Ea. His temple was called E-Abzu, as Enki was believed to live in Abzu, an aquifer from which all life was believed to stem.Eridu, also transliterated as Eridug, means "mighty place" or "guidance place".
From the Inside Flap
From the coldest climes to the deepest ocean floors, a cosmic conspiracy full of betrayal and fear is being hatched with the hope of pushing the world perilously close to the brink of self-destruction. It is up to Dan Amenta to journey through dark and deadly alleys--even into the depths of the planet--to unlock the shadowy logic of alien minds."Once Humans" starts seven years after the events narrated in "Daimones", Vol.1 of the homonymous "Daimones Trilogy".The story is a 'loss of innocence' for Dan and for the Selected. The events and the emotional trauma prepare the race of man to reclaim its place in the galaxy.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 15, 2013Great book! Once again Massimo has done it, kept me reading and reading and wanting more. And when Dan goes to another planet so goes my mind. Unfortunately I'm brought back to reality.... I with I was a Keeper... Nice plot, nice story, great imagination!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2013A good story, good premise... too bad we have to wait for the 3rd volume. It could use a tiny bit better character development...but the author is a physicist not an English major. Otherwise a good read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2015I loved the story that this second book in the series tells. The surprise espionage of some of the good guys is compelling, and you don't know who all to root for until the very end. However, I kept wishing it was a movie so I could understand it better. The author (or translator?) is obviously not a native English-speaker, and it shows in numerous places in the book. Prepositions were missing in several places. During long conversations, no textual distinction was made between talking and mind reading, and often there was confusion about whose words were directed towards whom. So called synonyms or archaic words are used in ways that ended up with strange connotations, making me reread passages often to get understanding, or to give up and pass over hoping to catch on later. (Example: The cars were "wreaked" when their drivers died. And a "suppository" was used to tunnel into the mountain.") According to the author's website, a rewrite is in the works. It can only be a good thing.
Bottom line...good sci-fi story, but I'm not up for slogging through another book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 24, 2018This book grabbed me and sucked me in. I felt like I was there, living the angst, the love, the mystery. The character development was spot on and the story compelled me to read late into the night. It was like going to a great movie when 2 hours goes by like 2 minutes.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2013This, the second book in the trilogy is a real page turner, better than book one which had a familiar first part and took a while to "warm up". can't wait for the third book in the series, what will become of the human race?
- Reviewed in the United States on February 27, 2014While I do appreciate the authors style, I cannot get past the fact that, the human race has been culled twice. A third time means their extinction. This is all due to the fact that the aliens perceive humans as barbarically killing one another. But, the aliens are also fighting other aliens! Huh? What is the point? The premise of the plot is rediculous. I really don't care why what how or when. This is rediculous. I do not recommend such a silly read!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 17, 2013Much better than the first book "Daimones" in that the author has apparently learned not to go into so much detail on really unimportant elements of the story. I did not have to skip pages in this second book to finish it. I applaud the author for his imagination in visualizing this possible future for earth - it is a very interesting premise. Unfortunately it is told in a rather factual and flat first person style that lacks the richness of emotion. The characters are cardboard and mouth the words but don't feel the feelings that real people do. I think this second book tried to cover too much content which may be why there is so little in the way of character development. Had it been split into two books more time would have been available to make the characters seem more real, more human. I see his potential and I hope the author will keep working to achieve it.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 22, 2013The second book of the trilogy was a great read too. I was half expecting an inspired book as often sequel is , but no , it is once again a great read, the characters deepened and you get attached to them , humans and aliens ! I hope I will not have to wait to long for the third book . Valerie

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, fantastic series, great read!
This is the second book in series and it is another master piece. Quite connected with the previous book, this book takes its readers to the next level of excitement and adventure. The reader also gets the opportunity to observe and live the evolution of the characters. Massimo has done a great job in making you feel yourself a part of the adventure.
I mostly judge the books by the number of days I spend reading them - I finished this book in 5 days during an important conference :) I hope this explains why I have rated it 5 stars - great read, great setup, great story!!!! Massimo, if you read those words, please know that you have raised the bar really high - looking forward to the next book which I believe would be even more mind blowing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing after Daimones
Read Daimones and loved it. Once Humans was not as interesting or gripping as Daimones for me, I found it easy to put down. The book seemed a little rushed and quite a few errors appear to confirm this. Even so it is worth a read if you read the first book and enjoyed it. Once Humans follows on with the characters from Daimones, although I felt there was a gap between the two books. I was left feeling that Once Humans could have been so much more,
To be fair maybe Daimones was a tough act to follow, Fingers crossed for the third book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The plot thickens - great scifi story take 2
I enjoyed Daimones so much, I could not leave the trilogy unfinished.
The plot thickens in Once Humans. Humanity has started to settling in again but another dark shade is menacing the peace of the community.
Mr Marino delivered another great piece of science fiction that will make you turn the pages no stop.
Can't wait to put my hands on the Vol.3.
