5-stars. Bill Howard for Readers' FavoriteThe suspenseful, thrilling plot of Massimo Marino's work in Once Humans is very well designed and is presented in great detail. The development of the characters, their emotions and the way they react, makes the story move in a way that appeals to all members of the human race. This is an excellent sci-fi thriller which is not only well thought out and very imaginative, but thrilling and captivating as well.-4-stars. Linda Tonis for the Paranormal Romance Guild group - I enjoyed this book, and was able to come back to this world, since the author with use of a prologue updated the reader on what transpired in book one of the series. At times it is very hard to follow a series when books can be months or years apart, so having an author update you is something all authors should do.-4-stars. San Francisco Book Review Magazine - "Once Humans" continues the complexity of the "Daimones Trilogy", plunging the reader deeper and deeper into the inferno of a story, giving some answers, but also posing more questions and wonders.-3.5 Ind'tale stars - 3 Kettles, Sarah Bradley for Ind'tale Magazine - This book has a solid story and interesting development. Fans of books like "Ender's Game" will enjoy this story, as much of the ideas behind it are similar, making choices that balance the need for advancement with the ideals of the human race. Overall, a good read!

From the Author

Why on earth Earth becomes Eridu in the "Daimones Trilogy"?Every name in the trilogy bears a symbolic meaning.

Eridu was long considered the earliest city in southern Mesopotamia, and is still today argued to be the oldest city in the world. Located 12 km southwest of Ur, Eridu was the southernmost of a conglomeration of Sumerian cities that grew about temples, almost in sight of one another. In Sumerian mythology, Eridu was originally the home of Enki, who was considered to have founded the city, later known by the Akkadians as Ea. His temple was called E-Abzu, as Enki was believed to live in Abzu, an aquifer from which all life was believed to stem.Eridu, also transliterated as Eridug, means "mighty place" or "guidance place".

I loved the story that this second book in the series tells. The surprise espionage of some of the good guys is compelling, and you don't know who all to root for until the very end. However, I kept wishing it was a movie so I could understand it better. The author (or translator?) is obviously not a native English-speaker, and it shows in numerous places in the book. Prepositions were missing in several places. During long conversations, no textual distinction was made between talking and mind reading, and often there was confusion about whose words were directed towards whom. So called synonyms or archaic words are used in ways that ended up with strange connotations, making me reread passages often to get understanding, or to give up and pass over hoping to catch on later. (Example: The cars were "wreaked" when their drivers died. And a "suppository" was used to tunnel into the mountain.") According to the author's website, a rewrite is in the works. It can only be a good thing.
Bottom line...good sci-fi story, but I'm not up for slogging through another book.

This book grabbed me and sucked me in. I felt like I was there, living the angst, the love, the mystery. The character development was spot on and the story compelled me to read late into the night. It was like going to a great movie when 2 hours goes by like 2 minutes.

While I do appreciate the authors style, I cannot get past the fact that, the human race has been culled twice. A third time means their extinction. This is all due to the fact that the aliens perceive humans as barbarically killing one another. But, the aliens are also fighting other aliens! Huh? What is the point? The premise of the plot is rediculous. I really don't care why what how or when. This is rediculous. I do not recommend such a silly read!

Much better than the first book "Daimones" in that the author has apparently learned not to go into so much detail on really unimportant elements of the story. I did not have to skip pages in this second book to finish it. I applaud the author for his imagination in visualizing this possible future for earth - it is a very interesting premise. Unfortunately it is told in a rather factual and flat first person style that lacks the richness of emotion. The characters are cardboard and mouth the words but don't feel the feelings that real people do. I think this second book tried to cover too much content which may be why there is so little in the way of character development. Had it been split into two books more time would have been available to make the characters seem more real, more human. I see his potential and I hope the author will keep working to achieve it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book, fantastic series, great read!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 17, 2013
This is the second book in series and it is another master piece. Quite connected with the previous book, this book takes its readers to the next level of excitement and adventure. The reader also gets the opportunity to observe and live the evolution of the characters. Massimo has done a great job in making you feel yourself a part of the adventure.

I mostly judge the books by the number of days I spend reading them - I finished this book in 5 days during an important conference :) I hope this explains why I have rated it 5 stars - great read, great setup, great story!!!! Massimo, if you read those words, please know that you have raised the bar really high - looking forward to the next book which I believe would be even more mind blowing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing after Daimones
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 28, 2013
Read Daimones and loved it. Once Humans was not as interesting or gripping as Daimones for me, I found it easy to put down. The book seemed a little rushed and quite a few errors appear to confirm this. Even so it is worth a read if you read the first book and enjoyed it. Once Humans follows on with the characters from Daimones, although I felt there was a gap between the two books. I was left feeling that Once Humans could have been so much more,

To be fair maybe Daimones was a tough act to follow, Fingers crossed for the third book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The plot thickens - great scifi story take 2
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 30, 2014
I enjoyed Daimones so much, I could not leave the trilogy unfinished.
The plot thickens in Once Humans. Humanity has started to settling in again but another dark shade is menacing the peace of the community.
Mr Marino delivered another great piece of science fiction that will make you turn the pages no stop.
Can't wait to put my hands on the Vol.3.
