One Night in Madrid: City Nights Series: #8 Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 3 ratings

Danny left Dublin for Madrid two years ago, but still scans the crowd in the Irish pubs for the face of someone from home. Though doubtful he'll ever recognise anybody, one evening he sees Aisling, a girl he'd known - or wished he'd known - at university. Beautiful but haughty, she'd always ignored Danny, and though he'd fantasised about making love to her, she'd never so much as smiled at him.

To his amazement, Aisling is extremely friendly when she meets him all these years later and away from home. She is still snobby and condescending, but Danny decides to make her night as enjoyable as he can, hoping for one last chance to impress her and make his teenage fantasies come true. As the sultry Madrid night progresses, mere lust grows into affection, and Danny begins to see her snobbery as something else entirely. Will Aisling see Danny as more than just a way to pass her night in Madrid?

JD Martins has been called Spanish, Mexican, Chinese, Philippine and English and Australian. He is none of these.

He's lived in four cities in three countries on two continents, but he doesn't feel like he's travelled very much. His life in each city was rather mundane and he didn't get out much - tending to move his pen more than his body.

He still aspires to see much more of the world - probably when his wife becomes rich enough to let him retire from day jobs.

He would like to live like Ernest Hemingway: periodically sending novel manuscripts to his publisher from various far-flung corners of the world, though he's not sure the quality will be quite the same. Until then, he has contented himself with living like Robert Graves - in a pleasant part of Spain with a quiet life - and being able to do some things that Hemingway did - trout fishing in Spain, game hunting in Africa, watching bullfights and running with the bulls, - and a few that he did not get to do - surfing, skydiving, bungee jumping, and publishing erotic stories.

The quality of writing is wonderful in this novel. JD Martins lets you in via his descriptions to allow the reader to learn about the main characters. Yet, when he could expand more on the story and the characters, the scene turns to day dreams of erotic sex that Danny had thought about having with Aisling back in college and even while they are catching up in multiple bars. I felt that there was a great deal to the story that could have been written and that would have made it a true novel of substance without taking away from the building of the friendship, the sexual daydreams (although I found those repetitive in thought and nature) and the one night and day they had together. As they move from bar to bar, the reader again is provided with a bit more of the actual personality of each of the main characters. And again, they are able to see more into the characters during their actual day of sex.

If one is a reader who mainly wants a book filled with actual or imagined erotic sex where substance is little and knowing more about the story and characters is limited, then this is a 5 star book.

As a reader of multiple genres and authors, I felt that just as the story was becoming a story and we were learning more about the main characters and their stories, both individually and together, it was stopped to incorporate daydreams of erotic sex Danny would like to have had with Aisling. And this was a continual pattern. The reader learns a bit more about each character as they travel from bar to bar drinking endlessly and once they truly have sex with one anolther. The ending is almost the most insightful view the reader is provided of the characters.

I felt this novel had wonderful potential to be character based with an actual story behind it while still encorporating the sexual daydreams and actual sex within the novel. There were a few times I believed it was getting there when it just stopped and changed focus.

Would rate at a 3.5, if possible.

Even though Danny left Dublin over two years ago, he still scans the crowd in the Irish bars of Madrid for signs of a familiar face. One night, to his surprise, he spots Aisling. A girl he always had a thing for back in University. He always fantasized about making love to her. However in Uni, she had nothing to do with him. Here in Madrid it's a different story, she is friendly and smiles at him. For one night he decides to show her the best night of her life. Will she see Danny as more than just a one night in Madrid.
This book is HOT from the start. It is like a condensed one night stand in hot words. The descriptions are very real and very erotic. Danny stole my heart. I was a little less forgiving of Aisling, she was stuck up and snobby. Although as the book goes on and you get to know her a little more, you do warm to her.
The story takes place over one night, although it does seem much longer than that. By the end of the book you are willing the sun to stay down and not rise at all. You want Danny to get his girl.
Does he? guess you will have to read the book to find out. Beautiful but steaming hot book by this author. I loved it.

This novel is intense in its descriptions of the interactions between Danny and Aisling. The reader is rooting for Danny the entire time and is hoping that this extended one night stand can turn into something more. Aisling, who at first seems to be such a strong, powerful woman, drops her facade to show how fragile she truly is. The backdrop of Madrid is beautiful and JD Martins does a wonderful job relating the breathtaking nightlife that belongs only to Madrid. This is a very short read and can be read in one sitting, but there is so much action that takes place within these pages. Be ready to have your world rocked when you read this excellent novella.
