- Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2019Straight from the off, Tom Benson had me hooked on the first story in this collection and importantly I stayed on the hook right to the end. It took me a while to get to this book and it has been one that I anticipated would be good, given I have read several Tom Benson books already. Not being a fan of short stories generally, I make an exception for this author as he manages to inject the right amount of tension, intrigue and ties it all together through theme and superb pacing. I think what I liked most about this collection was the dramatic tension and the connective themes. A superb book, I was justified in anticipating a quality read. I particularly liked Dealing with Conflict and The Hostage, but it would be hard to separate them from the rest given the fact that unlike many short story writers, Tom Benson maintains a high standard of story telling throughout. I'm Only sorry I didn't keep this for my holidays as it would make the perfect travelling read. Excellent read, highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2019Having read several of the author’s previous short story collections, it was a certainty I’d be picking this one up. If anything, they just keep getting better and better. The excellence of the writing style and elements of the opening story put me in mind of Frederick Forsyth’s ‘Fourth Protocol,’ i.e. a well-constructed story with superb attention to plot and detail. Following on, there is quite a variety of themes and scenarios, like in 'The Hunter,' where again, the tone and characters, though quite different storywise, had me thinking back to Jack London’s classic ‘White Fang.’
While every story is full and complete in that they provide the reader with a coherent plot and conclusion, many also read like snapshots of wider scenarios, ones that could easily be expanded on in all manner of ways thus allowing the reader to exercise their own imagination too. Needless to say, several stories finish with the classic ‘twist in the tail’ conclusion that makes you either smile or gasp, thinking ‘yes, neat ending, I like that,’ as in ‘The Meeting,’ where the twist really does hit you out of the blue (one of my favourites I might add).
Although the stories are quite varied in the style, location, and even time, as with most of the author’s previous books there is an underlying sense of justice running through most of them, of things coming good and working out, as in Changing Tides, a real ‘feelgood factor’ tale, and another particular favourite. I liked too that several stories, where appropriate, gave a nod to the author’s military experience, adding to their authenticity. All in all, another cracking short story collection from Tom Benson … enough variety to keep you guessing and intrigued as to what’s coming next, but a semi-consistent theme, and absolutely consistent in their quality.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 25, 2019This collection of short stories reflects, to a great degree, Mr Benson’s military background as recorded in “about the author”. This gives a strong flavour of authenticity to what might otherwise seem unlikely tales. Just what does go on in our name without our knowledge? It left me wondering!
The variation between the daughter of an English racehorse owner and a UN activist in the African jungle ensures readers a surprise with every new title and they all have a twist in the tail it’s impossible to see coming. One thing holds good – the characters may break the law, but they all uphold the author’s innate sense of justice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost addictive as you read just one more story
This book is another good showcase for Tom Benson's eclectic writing style. This is an easy book to pick up and read and almost addictive as you read just one more story.
Tom writes novels in different genres: action, intrigue, thriller, military valour, sci-fi, and erotica as well as poetry. Of these, I think my favourite is his action & military based stories. This collection starts off with a excellent action based story of surveillance and deception and closes with four stories of bravery, action and valour.
Escape & Photographic memory are both inspiring military tales with great characters which could easily be expanded into full novels. However, it's good that they have been presented in a short format because it is enough to fire up your imagination.
Poison Ivy gives you a taste of the authors favourite kind of female protagonist: cool, calculating and pretty all round lethal.
Pawnee Express is a American western tale of positive payback for a kind act. The Hunter is a story told in a similar vein, except the payback is intergenerational an ends with a promise of another ripping yarn.
All in all, a pretty damn good collection of short stories. Take your pick and wash it down with one of his full novels.
