Only Human (The Human Cycle Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 54 ratings

Nathaniel Runnels isn’t a fan of life. He isn’t a fan of the news, which is a bust because he’s a reporter. He’s lost faith in journalism, in the truth, in civilization and in himself. So it’s quite the surprise when he gets swept up in a quest to save the world. Perception and reality collide as one man faces one question, would you sacrifice your humanity to save mankind?Only Human is a tale where the truth is revealed about vampires, about therians (make sure you don’t call them werewolves), about angels, about demons, the photogeni plant people and humanity as we supposedly know it. This isn’t your typical book, these aren’t your typical vampires and what has been said is fiction, may actually be truer than the history you’ve been sold.

After years working in advertising, JD Estrada decided there were better ways to write fiction. Born on August 13th, he shares birthdays with Alfred Hitchcock and Fidel Castro... an interesting coincidence since his mom was Cuban and he loves a good story.

Truth be told, he always dreamt about being an inventor, he just didn't know he'd end up doing it using words. Where some people choose to invent new products, he has chosen to invent worlds through words.

In college, he studied psychology for 3 years before he realized that if he finished, he’d need a psychologist for himself. Not being too enticed by the whole full circle nature of that equation, he switched to Marketing, Advertising... and Psychology. He just couldn’t let it go.

An avid reader of Science Fiction and Fantasy, throughout his life, he’s always loved writing and connecting with people. Mind you, although he loves those genres, his reading tastes are as eclectic as his musical passions. So, from rock to salsa to classical music, he also reads and writes in a variety of genres and is just as satisfied writing a review or a poem as he is working on his next novel. His blog is called For Writing out Loud and on which he connects with fellow readers who share the passions of writing and connecting.

This obsession with the human aspect of who we are is deeply embedded in all his work and his first book is no exception. Though still starting its journey towards the top 100 Amazon books, all in all, he’s released 22 books, including the Human Cycle urban fantasy series, a bilingual compilation of essays, poetry and short stories, and a wide variety of poetry collections. He has also published adventures for younger readers in both novel and short story form. You can find Estrada in most major social media platforms under @jdestradawriter.

His favorite band is Pearl Jam, he was born in Puerto Rico, he bodyboards and to him, playing a guitar is as therapeutic as a notebook. So visit, say hi, and connect.

He hopes you are doing well and that you enjoy your visit to any of the literary planets he has lovingly crafted.

Only Human – Book Review

Only Human – Book Review
Only Human by J.D. Estrada is unlike anything I’ve ever read. Don’t be off put by the amount of chapters in here, each of them are exactly the length that they need to be. None of the reader’s time is wasted here and the chapter titles themselves are fantastically descriptive and entertaining which I really appreciate, I love myself a well titled chapter. From page one the scope is epic. Nathaniel Runnels is our main character; he is a writer gone journalist but he hates the news, the irony here is beautiful. As a writer he feels he writes best when he feels worse. As a writer myself I felt I could wholly identify with the main character. Estrada describes food in a mouthwatering fashion, which ranges from a line about spicy brown mustard to all kinds of different tastes and aromas. He has gone on record say he writes as if he were a food critic and I can’t praise that approach to writing enough. He also tackles creatures which could be seen as cliché such as vampires, werewolves, demons, and elves but they’re explored in new and interesting ways which have yet to see the light. I couldn’t believe my eyes as to the veracity that these characters possessed and the life that was breathed into them and their age old mythologies. Even tropes of fantasy such as war and battle have an important place in this story. At times it can be exposition heavy but to me all that means is that the narrative is detail oriented. There are details in the details, a feat which I imagine was hard to accomplish. There are also a lot of big words so you might want to brush up on your vocabulary a bit before reading. Nathaniel is often described as “the human” by the narrator which is a cool way to put the reader in the perspective of a monster’s point of view. The tone of the writer is reminiscent of authors such as C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and J.K. Rowling but with a darker twist. The main character’s dry sense of humor and pessimistic views on life are absolutely addicting to read about. This novel is like taking a psychology 101 class, you learn so much about what makes up the human mind in here. As I read it each monster or obstacle Nathaniel encountered can be viewed as another area of the brain. For instance vampires represent the soul and the questioning of one’s own existence. This plot device is used in many clever ways to ponder existential questions that have plagued humanity since the beginning of time. I don’t want to give anything away but the main character even gets to talk to god at some point, yes, God! I’m telling you… this story is not afraid to go there and the end result is truly a masterpiece. There are elements of Sci-Fi present within this mostly fantasy piece as well as flares of other genres, proving this story breaks genres like the best works of fiction do. A lot of thought and hard work clearly went into this piece. Daniel, a vampire who befriends Nathaniel along this epic journey, is also a welcome addition to the cast as he and Nathaniel create a relationship and bond is in the vain of great team ups such as Sherlock and Watson or Batman and Robin, well, in this case Daniel really is sort of a Batman, you know since he’s a vampire and all. There are even nods to Alice in Wonderland and the white rabbit in here which for a reader who adores Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland are always appreciated. My favorite character by far was the pirate captain by the name of Captain Jane, with her ship is called the Black Calico. She is beyond cool, and do you want to know why? She’s a vampire pirate, do I need to say that again, a vampire… pirate… what more could you want from this world? But also her personality is one that’s special and unique to the rest of the book. She is strong yet her sense of humor is utterly enchanting. Most of this book takes place whilst traveling among the freedom of the seas to many a location. It makes you feel like you’re globetrotting yourself at the same time that the characters are. Various songs and hymns are strewn throughout that perfectly set the scene and there are beautiful settings and destinations such as Seville, Lake Tana, and the Forest of Raelis, which are a must-read. A constant theme of equality and race can be seen throughout as well which I commend the author on for being so bold as to discuss those topics from such an inquisitive perspective. There are a LOT of characters in here which at times can be a little hard to keep track of so if you prefer self-contained stories such as a high school drama it may be harder for you to get into but if you like expansive mind bending stories which offer an the amount of detail that a proper odyssey entails than this is for you. It’s the ultimate road trip story and the best way to describe it is Pirates of the Caribbean meets True Blood meets Peter Pan meets Constantine. Even the ending is of epic proportions that doesn’t disappoint in the slightest. It holds up to the likes of ending battles in works such as the Hobbit, Narnia, and Harry Potter. This is one hell of a story which is filled to the brim with great characterization, edge of your seat action, infinite amounts of exploration, an in-depth look into humanity itself, and a passionate and well thought out story. What more could you possibly want out of a book? Reading this felt like I won an all-expense paid vacation and with that realization I give this novel, Only Human by J.D. Estrada, 5 out of 5 stars, hats off to Estrada for creating such an incredible piece of fiction which I highly suggest you read. As for me, I cannot wait to read the next installment in the Human Cycle Series!!!

When I first found out that J.D. Estrada was going to have a book of his published I was overjoyed as I have been privileged to read a lot of his work over the years. When I was told about what the book was about, I was instantly in love - vampires! Who does not love vampires? Anyhow, once I got the book and started reading it, it became apparent to me that the book, Only Human, was not just about vampires. The book is about so much more than that! The book in composes many different entities: angels, demons, vampires, therians, photogeni plant people, as well as humans.

The book is very detailed, but has an even and smooth flow. The book begins with an abduction of a human named Nathaniel Runnels who is bored with life. He is given two choices: help or die. Naturally, anyone with those choices would choose to live, as Nathaniel did. Nathaniel plays a huge role in the book and essentially (SPOILER ALERT): becomes the hero. I will not divulge how he becomes the hero or of what he is the hero of, but just know when you are reading the book and you are trying to figure out everyone's role that Nathaniel's is big!

You will encounter some unexpected references in this book. They are by no means out of place and fit well into the story and what is currently happening. References include: Pearl Jam lyrics, other book references, and 80s and 90s pop-culture.

As I said I was drawn in when I found out the book was about vampires, but J.D.'s writing makes you NOT want to put the book down. This book is part of a series and personally, I cannot wait to get my hands on the next book! I want to see where the author takes the characters and learn more about them. This book is highly recommend to anyone - get yourself a copy today, you will not be disappointed!

Only Human is the debut novel by JD Estrada, and the first in a series. The world-building here gets five of five stars. There's a very rich imagination churning through these pages which kept me reading when otherwise I might have fallen off. I was confused and uncomfortable throughout the first third, stumbling alongside our courageous protagonist, Nathaniel, a human minority in a world full of demons, vampires, angels, therians, and a conscious plant kingdom. The story is 'high fantasy'. An about-face for this career ad man turned author. You find yourself transported to various places (some on earth), from oceans to battlefields to forests to strange labyrinthine settings where shadows come to life and god knows what else. Step aside Naked Lunch, it's time for dinner! The characters are quirky. Some are clearly dark and demonic, while others are beyond good and evil, and have settled into a murky (and endearing) gray area. A few fallen angels. And good news: the tired old morality play is mostly shoved in the trunk. Estrada emphasizes questions over answers. But there is a ripple through his universe which demands that an alliance form between disparate groups to defeat a vile enemy force, if only they can all get along for a minute.

Many of the characters enjoy deep and abiding friendships, particularly the vampires who have lived long enough to form them. I particularly enjoyed the interplay between Liam and Daniel and Nathaniel. Wonderful, cheeky dialogue. The main characters are robust. They cover a lot of ground, both physically and metaphysically. There are an awful lot of periphery characters (I had trouble keeping track of them all), and yet there is an unspoken ground always beneath them, which has something to do with mother's lemon cake. The protagonist was endearing from the start, as he blunders his way through confusing new worlds and experiences; Nathaniel is an inquisitive human with a compelling sense of loyalty and justice. From the gate he is challenged by vampires who for some odd reason have decided to let him live (they will need him). He goes through many manipulations of body, mind and feeling, all of which are very well described. I got especially hooked when nature began to manifest around him in all sorta fascinating manner, just past the halfway point. Only as the story evolved did I begin to feel attached to his struggle in having to dig down deep to survive.

Nathaniel has to contend with the chaos and everyone around him, and when he exceeds everyone's expectations, it does not go to his head. You get the sense that what he really has to contend with is himself. < sigh > Don't we all? This is where he grabbed my heart. I really liked how loyal he was, putting his life on the line for his new friends. He has a wry sense of humor, I laughed many times. By the end I was pleasantly surprised by my own attachment to this story. I guess the emotional connect crept up on me. Which is good! I look forward to more adventures. This is an impressive and ambitious start for JD Estrada, and author with a talent for world-building and dialogue, and a most expressive imagination.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Epic Reworking of Myths and Monsters
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 31, 2017
Only Human is a fantastic fantasy novel featuring vampires, werewolves, angels, demons, and many other mythological creatures. It is as expansive as Middle Earth (even if the novel takes place on planet Earth), and features locations probably not seen in your average fantasy novel: I really appreciated the parts of the book set in Ethiopia, for example. I have to appreciate the author's depth of knowledge and the level of research that went into this, as it takes so many mythological creatures and stories from across the globe and spins them into a compelling, rich and philosophically profound tapestry.

All of this serves as the perfect backdrop to a story featuring Nathaniel Runnels, who is wrenched from his ordinary life and into a quest for the salvation of the Earth.

I thoroughly enjoyed Nathaniel's relationship with Daniel, the vampire who guides him on his new path, and their journey across the globe to warn the other creatures of darkness of the encroaching doom. Nathaniel is drawn into a dizzying abyss of weird creatures, sexy vampiric women, as well as a psychological and reality-bending narrative that will leave you in awe of Estrada's imagination. The novel also takes you on a trip of familiar myths and legends from the bible and spins them into original characters, many of whom have a fun sense of humour.

I loved all the characters, especially how they speak to each other - so much fun. I particularly liked Bill, who features in some of Nathaniel's dreams, and enjoyed all the scenes he was in.

Estrada's writing is strong. Very descriptive with a powerful and dynamic use of language. His descriptions of characters, garments, settings and emotional states are great. His descriptions of action is also superb. It is a fairly long novel, but the language is fresh and vivid throughout.

The overall narrative works well and builds to a satisfying climax. Nathaniel Runnel's journey is compelling, interesting and surprising, and the vast collection of ancillary characters are strong and memorable.

Dive in and get lost in the madness!

5.0 out of 5 stars A trip around a supernatural world I'll always remember fondly.

This book made me laugh, made me cry, awoken my childhood sense of wonder, and overall provided an experience I won't forget. It succeeded in making me want to read more books in general and got me back into writing which I hadn't done seriously in over a decade.

For full disclosure, I read this book because I think the author is an excellent individual and wanted to support him, so with that, I may be kind of biased. This is also the first book review I've ever written.

I'd be hard-pressed to choose a genre this novel most fits into, but above all, it spoke to my sense of adventure. It has elements of mystery, drama, horror, action, fantasy, but adventure is what continually comes to my mind. As the reader, you join Nathaniel Runnels on a worldwide journey along with a collection of supernatural characters who may leave you asking, "How can Nathaniel hope to contend in this world when he is... Only Human."

The book isn't the next great American novel, but it hits all the notes for me required in a beautiful 'hidden gem.' Like a B-Movie that you cherish more than a shining Oscar winner, the book managed to charm me with its simultaneously roguish and sincere grin. At times I felt like the main character nearly became a "Mary Sue" in my eyes. In other occasions, the sheer improbability or absurdity of what I read risked taking me out of the story. Through it all though, the novel's enduring charm managed to keep me along for the ride until I fell in love with the adventure I had become a part.

The author touches on a variety of issues and struggles in the book and usually manages to do it in a subtle or engaging way. The author is also fond of pop culture references and various easter eggs. Some are gently woven into the tale and will only ever be known by a select few, others are dramatically obvious, and the reader can just imagine the enormous grin that must have been plastered on the authors face as he committed to including them into the story. That's okay though; they put a massive grin on my face just the same.

The book uses modern fantasy in a way that is most appealing to me. While supernatural beings and creatures of fantastic power exist, it is, for the most part, hidden and secret. Cars are still among the most practical forms of transportation and guns are just as potentially deadly in this world as our own. Magic exists, but not in the form of wizards casting spells with wands; it is something much more rare, organic and visceral.

Overall I found the writing was comfortable, I wasn't continually being assaulted with smarty person words that I needed a thesaurus attached to my hip, but the vocabulary was robust enough that my mind was able to paint vivid pictures of the people, places, and things I read.

Initially, the sheer amount of characters I was introduced to was a bit intimidating for me, especially as someone who doesn't regularly read fiction. By the end of the book, I found I enjoyed most of the characters, saw many of them stand out on their own and my biggest complaint in that regard was that each character, even the side characters hadn't been given more pages to shine.

Ultimately the books I read play like movies in my mind and inevitably I compare the books I love to the films I love. In that sense, I'd say Only Human played out in my mind like a delightful marriage of Big Trouble in Little China with Indiana Jones then enjoy with a biblical garnish and a dark fantasy dessert.

Only Human is the first in what I believe is currently intended to be a trilogy. The second book has been released, and I was just as pleased by the second. I'm confident I will enjoy the third and whatever bubbled up from the author's mind from there.

I'd heard so much about this novel that I couldn't wait to buy a copy and I'm so glad I did.
Mr Estrada is one of those rare breeds of author who are more like painters. Every word he writes is like a brush stoke of intense colour. His descriptions have the power to completely submerge you within each page.
The story begins with the protagonist and hero Nathaniel Runnels, a down and out disillusioned journalist. He is chosen by vampire Daniel to be the saviour, not only of humanity, but all the species who are only thought of as myth.
J.D Estrada then takes us on a whirlwind journey around the globe where we meet vampires, werewolves (known as Therians) , Angels, Demons and living plants. Each species is brilliantly written with a full and rich history and the demons are suitably hideous and frightening.
This is a powerfully woven piece of literature which is brilliant in both it's scope and depth.
I can't wait to start the second book in the Being Human cycle.

5.0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary story that crossed all to smoothly from fiction into reality. That's scary!

I love it when find a book which takes me completely by surprise. I read Vampire and usual thoughts spring to mind, that will teach me to jump in with preconceptions.

This isn't a standard any other kind of story. Nathaniel, might be an ordinary man, yes like many he is disillusioned with pretty much everything. Of course I knew when he got himself kidnapped by Daniel a sarcastic, intelligent, scheming Vampire it would end or change his life eternally. A thought provoking, challenging, and wonderful unusual story transpired.

As I joined Nathaniel on his journey, slowly and steadily the story enticed me, and gently whispered to me "are you sure that is the truth." I started asking myself questions, yes I do that, a lot but these were questions I have never thought of asking myself before and the fact a book inspired me to do that was amazing.

As this tale ideas skillfully drew me in, I found myself loving characters I really shouldn't, wanting to playing chess with a monster is a castle (and yes I am sure I would win), heartily wishing to slap Elliot into the ground, he is that obnoxious and then there is Bill. If he leapt out of the book to join me, I wouldn't be surprised, I would offer him a beer and endeavour to keep him here for as long as possible, although I may just regret wishing for that!

Do I like a work of fiction that makes me stop and think, honestly, I do, it's a little scary, but I like being scared.

Only Human is skillfully seductive ... don't say I didn't warn you.

5.0 out of 5 stars 🚨GENIUS OF AN ADVENTURE & A MUST READ IN OR OUT OF ISOLATION!🚨

Not sure what else I can add that hasn't already been perfectly reviewed by others..but I'll try. :)
The storyline gets off to a slow start but don't let that fool you! This book and the follow up novel in this trilogy are nothing short of pure genius. J.D weaves tales so impeccably that the reader is immersed into the world of each character flawlessly. Ya know.. The kind that you laugh, cry etc with each one, as well as cry going into a semi depression when you've turned the very last page. And what a delight that is! Not to be left out is that these books also make you think about your life and the importance of what you do with it.
Everyone has books they read once and loved, and books they loved and re read countless times. Only Human and Shadow fall into the countless. Picking up many things one may have missed the first time, the second time and in my case the 7th time. To me that is what I always hope for in books,,that it'll be one that I'll still be reading as a beloved old friend in my 70's.
DON'T MISTAKE this story as just another vampire, fantasy etc as that would quite literally be like comparing bananas to eggs benedict. You can't!
Yes, I could add other authors such as Gaiman or Tolkien for example of writing style, however JD Estrada is in a league of his own and ahead of his time in many, many ways. And again, impossible to compare to other authors which is exactly what makes a brilliant story teller.
The first time I read Only Human my brain was screaming that this story needs to be on the big screen worldwide and there's very few books that I've felt thus or can honestly say that. I still predict that someday this story will gain the attention and recognition it truly deserves.
Not sure if he still does them but in the past JD has attended with his own booth, spoken on panels, meet and greets etc at Puerto Rico and a few other Comic Cons. Obviously no Comic Cons this year but in the future if you see his booth go meet him. A more kinder, loving and hella funny person you will not find! His blog For Writing Out Loud is fantastic as are his socials.
    Don't sleep on this author!!
I cannot recommend his works enough which for me is the highest compliment I can give an author and doesn't happen often.
To JD himself, thank you for continuing to gift us with your insane talent!
That's it from me but I'd encourage you to read the other reviews as well because they cover many things that I didn't.
If you are currently sheltering in place during these tumultuous times, do yourself a favor by going down the JD Estrada rabbit hole. I can PROMISE you'll never want to leave his world!
