Mr West has a way of pulling me into his stories from the start-so knew I’d enjoy this book as much as the first one I read by him. Great suspense thriller which I highly recommend if your looking to be entertained.

A 3-star Rating for this book is mighty generous. Initial impressions after having read 1/3 of this story, though, is that The Author spends way too much time on the primary woman's insecurities following the break-up of her marriage, and the plot then moved forward at such a glacial setting that it's quite hard to be enthused with the plot. After further reading, the story-line didn't really improve much, and it's very hard for The Reader to stay interested OR think this is a good book. In fact, it turns out that this is NOT even a thriller or murder mystery, and if that's what The Reader is looking for -- you'll overall be very dissatisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant. Incredibly good writing. Awesome plot and a riveting ending. Loved it!

I LOVED this book so much! I read it and got no sleep until it was finished as I started the book at midnight (bad idea) as I was utterly riveted and invested. I was hooked.

I’m now about to start Mark’s new book, just published called A Killer Amongst Us, so check that one out too. I plan to read all of Mark’s books. He is an underrated writer in my opinion and I hope this review draws more readers to enjoy his quality writing.

God, where do I begin, it’s taken me a few days to crack on with this as I feel I have so much to say I can’t get it out. You know that feeling? This is incredibly well written with true talent and there is nothing I did not like. Nothing. High praise indeed.

So, our main character is Claire. She’s left her cheating husband and is starting a new life with her teenage son in a nice area with good neighbours. She’s a likeable and realistic character that I liked immediately. Very early in the book strange things to cross her path, weird messages, glimpses of a person, dressed in a specific way that Claire keeps seeing in different places she frequents.

Claire has a stalker. She doesn’t know who or who and no clue what they want. She’s not the type of person who does anything to piss anybody off. At first Claire is in fear, only natural but she keeps drawing on inner strength and looking for logical reasons thinking she’s reading into things too much.

Claire joins a local friendship group and a cast of characters enter her life. Mark writes characters extremely well. They are each very clear, delineated from each other, no blurry lines. You know each one, can recall each one as they are so distinct. There is none of that “who is that person again?” or a list of characters that you can’t keep up with.

Mark is good at smokescreens and red herrings. So many great moments that have you convinced you have scouted out her stalker. So many times Claire wonders who she can really trust. This is not a high octane super speed novel. It builds up the plot and tension really well. I was so invested early on. Mark’s writing, in my opinion is a cut above some much more famous and best-selling Psychological Thriller writers and I really mean that.

A huge strength I picked up on immediately is the clever, realistic style of dialogue. Conversations read like real ones. You are reading and hearing each unique voice as if they are talking in real life. There are few fillers like numerous “then he said..” or “she responded with..” if you get my drift. They flow. I picked up on that as a really strong feature.

Many great characters to like, love and detest. Even minor characters are brought to life. As more sinister things start to happen to Claire she graduates from fear to a sheer determination to find out who her stalker is and stop it all. She’s pretty gutsy I have to say. I was suspecting just about everyone! There are some unique and unexpected scenes in the book that give it an interesting edge.

Mark cleverly plants seeds of who it might be. I was sure over and over I’d pinpointed the stalker to be wrong. When I did think I’d worked out who even then I kept going back away from that person. The plot is so good. I was turning pages and definitely wasn’t putting it down to come back to. I was invested to the end.

The ending, in fact the last third of the book was thrilling. So much going on and some final scenes were like watching a really good movie. There was nothing cliche or expected at all. I felt it was really well done to say the very least. Mark is able to write so you are clearly in the frame.

The reason for why the stalker is targeting Claire blew me away. Totally unexpected, didn’t cross my mind despite moments where we “hear” a bit from the stalker’s mind and feelings towards Claire. Kudos Mark for keeping the motive well hidden.

I rarely rant on about a book I love unless I would confidently recommend it and buy it for other book lovers. This was not like other psychological thrillers I’ve read lately. Mark has a unique style and Id like to take some writing lessons from him.

Folks, this is awesome. I devoured it and am keen to read more from Mark. I think he needs a lot more exposure and one of the biggest publishers need to hook him up. This gets an easy five stars from me and I’ve not even done it justice in this review.

Ironically I was led to Mark and his books by an online stalker of mine who caught Mark up in petty actions very unfairly. So sometimes dark deeds lead to great victories. I would never of discovered Mark and his books if not for this bitter person.

Watch out for my review of Mark’s new release! I am starting it today. If you love a good book especially a psychological thriller with twists and plenty of wrong avenues to wander down in your deductions then this is for you. Highly recommended!

Calie is being followed. Things happen to make her feel targeted. The idea is chilling. I thought the book was good but the writing should have been sharper.

Mark needs to stop making every chapter perfect and a committee decision as he loses the thread. The story reads like a TV script. A fight goes for pages, perfect in every detail but the reader is in the moment and wants it to end . Why does Calie go to the police and only tell them half the story. There are too many extraneous events clogging up the narrative. She has a best friend. Let's make her a lesbian, obviously a committee decision.

You know how it is, you wait ages for a good thriller and then two come along at once, and both by the same author.

Hit on the heels of Mark West's breakout novel "Don't Go Back" is this second thriller in which Claire Heeley discovers she is the subject of unwanted attention by someone in a grey hoodie who is following her around town.
Only Watching You is a fantastic thriller which will keep you guessing right up to the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another cracking thriller from the pen of Mark West
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 10, 2022
Several months after Claire’s husband leaves her for another woman, her friend Amy convinces her to join a local ‘singles’ group at a nearby pub, in an effort to kick-start her social life. For the past months she has been living with her 15 year old son, trying to adjust to being on her own, and her confidence is low, so the invitation to join the group seems to come at the right time for her. The other members of The Hadlington Friends appear to be in similar circumstances and at first Claire feels a sense of belonging and an affinity with her new-found pals. However she soon begins to notice a strange hooded figure crossing paths with her regularly, and a man in a car whose presence begins to unnerve her. Someone is scrawling sinister graffiti on walls near where she lives. Someone with a very dangerous mind and a deeply disturbing motive…

Only Watching You arrives hot on the heels of Mark West’s previous thriller, Don’t Go Back, which was published earlier this year. West, whose success in writing is previously across the horror genre, yet again demonstrates that he is equally adept at working in different genres. The qualities that made Don’t Go Back work so well are evident here too; fast-paced prose and direct storytelling, with well-balanced chapters, populated with engaging characters. West has a keen ear for dialogue, and it’s difficult to remember that these characters are fictional, so grounded in reality is his writing. Actually, this particular novel has quite an array of different characters – especially the ones introduced from Claire’s visit to the singles group – and the author does a fine job of making each one distinct and separate, so you never feel confused about the different names that crop up. This is particularly important because – and this is no real spoiler to anyone who reads even just casually in the thriller genre – the malign and sinister figure stalking her is actually someone much closer to her than she realises. West skilfully misdirects us with the plot developments and the manner in which he shuffles the characters around, until we think we know who is behind this campaign of harassment, before he propels things into a different direction for the final act. The denouement is tense and suitably macabre, again highlighting how the author’s writing shares a cinematic quality, and he pulls all the strands of the novel together perfectly.

Whether Mark West ever returns to writing horror is a question no one but himself can answer. But it’s certainly not an understatement to say that if he doesn’t, the horror genre’s loss is most definitely the thriller genre’s gain. Recommended.
