About the Author
Hi I'm Brian and I've spent the last 20+ years helping companies large and small get better outcomes. During this time, I've learned, applied, and taught others the principles of process improvement and systems thinking. I've spent the last two years applying my experience, mental models, and methods in the entrepreneur space. I've worked with dozens of entrepreneurs who have successfully learned how to apply these principles to their own businesses. These entrepreneurs have been in all different stages, industries, and countries around the world. Chances are, I've worked with a business similar to yours and have already helped an entrepreneur just like you Optimize for Outcomes and get better results with their business.
I've helped brand new entrepreneurs figure out what to focus on when getting started and I've helped six-figure entrepreneurs scale to seven figures. More than anything I love helping others achieve their goals and make their business everything they want it to be.
When I'm not writing or working with entrepreneurs, you can find me working in the yard or working behind my smoker or grill.

About the author

Hello and welcome! I'm Brian and have been focused the last few years on taking the experience of a 20 year corporate career and applying learnings, best practices, and mental models to the world of small business and entrepreneurs.
I've worked for companies large and small, from 20 person startups to Fortune 5. I also spent five of those years working as a consultant, working with many companies in many industries.
I've held roles in leadership, project & program management, product management, financial analysis, and IT operations. While my career has been diverse from a roles perspective, every role I've had has had common themes around business process improvement and technology.
I love building new products, especially software (things in planning!) but also have a passion for helping people build good processes and systems to get more done.
I would love to hear from readers! Any feedback, questions, or needs - email me at brian@optimizeforoutcomes.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 26, 2020As I write this, I am a Level 2 Engineering Manager at a Medium-sized Enterprise. This is the book that I wish someone had given me when I was initially promoted into a Management position from being an Individual Contributor. While the book is clearly aimed at the Entrepreneur and Small Business Owners, it is important to remember one of the author’s key points: fundamentally, all businesses are the same. Meaning, all the lessons-learned in this book that will clearly optimize growing businesses apply for larger enterprises and it really helps established employees gain a perspective of all the moving parts of a business that they are not privy to. Especially once you hit 100+ companies and ‘Silos’ start to appear, most non-Managerial employees really have little visibility into what makes a business work and understanding all the Systems and Processes that are needed to run them – and how to optimize them. This book really helps provide this perspective and intro to Business Systems Thinking. I have learned the hard way many of the lessons in this book, which could have saved me earlier “growing pains.” A broad swath of topics is covered in this book to really get you thinking and identifying inefficiencies and using tools to optimize them. One thing that I appreciated was the author’s theme that you do not need to make Systems complicated or spend $$$$ on specialized software to achieve your desired outcomes and outputs. A lot of real-world use-cases and examples are set forth in this book to really help connect the abstract to reality as you can see the author is genuinely trying to help the reader apply these lessons in their domains. To that note, it’s interesting to note that the core topics of the book ends about ¾ of the way through and a succession of ‘Bonus Chapters’ unfold primarily focused on the author’s experience in real settings showing real-world problems and how he used Systems Thinking to solve them. Good read, and a good book to have handy to refresh yourself.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 1, 2021If you have a small business or run a department in a larger business and keep missing deadlines, have quality issues, don’t why costs are so high, have difficulty budgeting then this is the book for you. Brian shares how and when to use great powerful tools such as SIPOC (learn where things go wrong), RCA/5 whys (learn why they go wrong), and swim lanes (who was responsible for it going wrong). One small exception I take with Brian is I do believe the FMEA (what happens if it goes wrong) is mandatory for any process improvement initiative, but I do come from the risk side of process improvement. In short, Optimize for Outcomes is one of the best primers on the six-sigma approach of Y=f(x) without having to learn a lot of new math. - Viewpoint of a 20-year process improvement leader and Six Sigma Greenbelt.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 10, 2020Often in business, it takes a lot more than just putting out a great product or service to be successful.
This book arms you with the tools and perspectives you'll need to go beyond just being good at what you sell to improving the efficiently and ability to do so.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guide to building systems
I was already familiar with Brian's work and thinking around building systems which led me to the book. Im a disorganised person by nature which makes building systems for my business really hard. However I know they are essential for growing a business in the most stress free way possible so it has been a source of stress for me that I struggle to implement them
Brian's book breaks this methodology down in a very accessible way and has made building systems much more realistic for me and I've already started thinking about my outcomes when starting a project now and building the system around that. Strongly recommended for anyone looking to implement better systems in their business

5.0 out of 5 stars Make you pause and ask the right questions so you can measure the right things
This book starts with making sure you look at the right things and you understand what matters. It does make you think if you are putting your focus on the right parts of your business or if you are looking for the wrong parts to fix.
That really sets the tone and makes you pay attention.
It's both big picture view, WHY it's worth doing and zoom into the details and WHAT needs doing after that.
There's so much packed in there, a proper manual to read regularly and act upon. No excuses now for broken or wobbly systems anymore, you can't say you didn't know. it's all there for you to understand and implement.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn to look at your business through a different lens
Brian has a knack for making what could potentially be quite a boring and complex topic but delivers it in a way that is easy to understand.
Full of practical and implementation ideas to my business, definitely worth grabbing a copy to get you thinking about working ‘on’ your business as opposed to being busy in the business all the time!
I particularly liked the sections on importance of building company culture early on, as I’ve seen and been part of this not being done so well.
Also his way of explaining the efficiency, productivity effectiveness really helped my logical brain soak it up.
All in all a great book

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect the outcomes of your business
After having already seen some of Brian's work I knew I had to get this book.
Brian walks you through how to look at the processes and systems in your business and to optimise them to create better outcomes. The worksheet and resources on the website afford the ability to consolidate what you have read and learned as you go through the book. Encouraging you to assess, reflect and identify change in your systems in real time. For the price of this book you would be crazy not to buy it, as you will be revisiting the activities throughout your whole career.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simple systems
Having watched a couple of online seminars Brian had delivered it was a no brainer to buy the book as someone who is interested in creating systems and outcomes to solidify and grow my small business. The book provides plenty of resources to do that no matter the size of your business/company. Undoubtedly it will take time to implement all that I have learned from the book but I have started to take action on the content already. Excited to see how this impact that current and future of my business! JJ
