    How can I adequately describe how excited I have been to finally get to the origin story of my favorite characters? This was everything I wanted and then some! I loved the slow build up of Vea and Nix’s relationship and seeing how they fell in love. And my hatred of Lux was confirmed a million times over. I knew he was evil but holy wow, he’s a true villain. This book was chonky and absolutely filled with the backstory I had been dying to read more of and I loved it so much!

    I don’t usually leave reviews but for this one I had to! This book was amazing! Saw the author talking about it on booktok and was curious enough to give it a shot. Hooked me right from the start and I can’t wait to dive into the rest. The characters were so interesting and not just the main ones. I was also fascinated by how the world and systems were set up and seeing the similarities to our own society currently.

    Charlie does amazing world building in the epic fantasy. Morduaine is my ideal world. I love Vea, the relationships she builds with those around her and the way she loves the people of her world. There were a few phrases that were over used and it took me a minute to figure out what phasing was, aside from that I loved this book and the story, can’t wait to read the next book.

    Angels, fae, immortality, and war, OH MY! You know the magic system and world-building is on point when you are telling your not-bookish father about the book, and he goes “sounds very Tolkien”. YES!! This is by far one of my favorite reads of 2021.

    The story starts out with a flashback to the past, showing a great mistake that sets events in motion for Véa and Nix—two children that are destined to grow up and sacrifice their own happiness for the good of their kingdoms. Forbidden love, old rivalries, and ancient magic make this tale perfect for anyone who loves an epic story of destiny and power interwoven with a slow burn romance.

    This book is also a long-distance prequel to another of Charlie’s series… and we know how satisfying it is to read interconnected stories!!

    If you’ve read From Blood and Ash, Lord of the Rings, or A Court of Thorns and Roses, you should give this a shot. I have no regrets except that I can’t force all of Booktok to read this :)

    Cannot wait for the sequel in January—counting down the days since that cliffhanger at the end!!

    I dont know where to start the first couple chapters are in like 3rd person or something I almost stopped reading but i didnt!! An boy am i glad i didnt. This is a perfect book to lose yourself in. Véa ends up married to a monster but I have a feeling in the next book that gets fixed! On to the next in the series! You should give this book a read by the end you love the characters!
