The Adventures of Mycroft Holmes, Book 1: The Other Mr. Holmes Kindle Edition

2.9 out of 5 stars 4 ratings

Mycroft Holmes is not so unlike his younger brother Sherlock. Mystery-solving and clever solutions set in the eighteen-eighties are afoot in a collection of tales featuring "The Other Mr. Holmes". Tearing through London in hansom cabs and knee-deep in the twists and turns in pursuit of adventure alongside Mycroft is his plucky, crack-shot mistress Anna.

Mycroft and Anna pursue whodunits around every winding corner in three adventures:
<>"The Adventure of the Royal Revelations": Queen Victoria's personal diary goes missing and an equerry is murdered. Certainly the murderer must be found; however, the Queen's comments on some of her ministers must never reach the Continental press. Mycroft is just the man to find the murderer and save Her Majesty's reputation. Mycroft and Anna attempt to keep the damning volume out of the hands of dastardly foreign agents.

"The Adventure of the Flame of the Natal Retrospect": Mycroft and Anna set out to save the reputation of a leading actress and keep the unique gemstone, the Flame of Natal, from the grasp of audacious thieves.

"The Adventure of the Reuters' Agent Summer": Mycroft and Anna cross swords with one of the deadliest enemies of Mycroft's brother--Colonel Sebastian Moran.

Sam Bonnamy is married and lives in a village in the North of England. He likes country walks, trees, the garden and growing things, and is interested in history, literature, theatre, politics and philosophy. Apart from English he speaks two and a half languages (German, Spanish, and a bit of Italian).

Sam turned to writing after taking early retirement from teaching, and sees the internet as a major influence in the future of publishing. Sam Bonnamy is a pen name.

Favourite authors are P G Wodehouse because of his rich humour, his plot variety and his absolute mastery of the English language. To Wodehouse, add George Macdonald Fraser, whose Flashman novels inject a tidal wave of red blood into the insipid world of political correctness. Arthur Conan Doyle is obviously an influence, for without his work where would Mycroft be? And to Conan Doyle add Dorothy Sayers for her literary quality in the detective story, Thomas Hardy for his depth of feeling for the English countryside and people, and Anthony Trollope for his incisive eye. Shake in Jane Austen, Shakespeare, Chaucer, the Bible and the unknown authors of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle for good measure, and that gives an idea of Sam's reading scope.

Reviewed in Italy on February 8, 2017
