Out in the Deep: MM College Romance (Out in College Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 1,302 ratings

Maybe I’m a little too serious.

I’ve been called a type-A personality and I’m okay with that. But this is my last year playing college water polo and I’m going to soak up every minute before I move on. The only real kink in my plan is the new guy on the team… aka, my nemesis. Or is he?

Gabe has big Olympic dreams. His transfer between Southern California universities has nothing to do with scholastics. I should admire his intensity, but he drives me crazy. And yet, I can’t deny that he’s good looking and smart. I don’t get it. I’m straight. Aren’t I?

Out in the Deep is a low-angst MM romance, bisexual coming out story where unwitting friendship and mutual attraction collide. Derek and Gabe will have to decide if this is the real thing or if they’re about to lose it all in the deep.

Review

With very little angst, strong well-developed characters, and self-discovery, this novella packs a punch. ... I drank up Out in the Deep, envious of what Derek and Gabe have. I enjoyed being on the sidelines watching them grow and mature into a couple of pretty amazing young men.
-Kimmers' Erotic Book Banter

Out in the Deep is a solid, light, angst-free story about two guys falling in love. ... a good choice for an engaging read to wind down your summer.
-Joyfully Jay

A gorgeous college romance from Lane Hayes ... Just perfect for a summer's day of chilling out. Love the characters, and read the whole book with a smile.
-author RJ Scott

The author's opening salvo in her new Out in College series went rather swimmingly, if I do say so myself. This was a story about self-awareness and self-acceptance and how jumping into what may seem like the murky waters of the unknown can be worth it.
-Dog-Eared Daydreams

It's romantic and sweet and all around good.
-Love Bytes Reviews

Out and Out Perfection ... What could have been an angst fest was refreshingly played out with bravery and honesty. ... Watching them both fall in love was why i read this genre.
-Amazon Review- ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Wonderful feel good story about falling in love ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The perfect blend of sweet and intense ... ust the right balance between sweet romance and intense emotion, with engaging characters and crisp dialogue.- Amazon Review

I'm a sucker for both sports romances and new adult stories, and with a side of enemies-to-lovers thrown in, I couldn't resist. I ended up being very happy with my decision, too, because Derek and Gabe's story definitely had me smiling and swooning most of the way through.

Full content visible, double tap to read brief content.

Lane Hayes lives in sunny Southern California with her amazing husband, who thankfully doesn’t mind cooking, and their fabulous fox red Labrador, George, who’s pure mischief. Both provide oodles of inspiration for the low-angst, humorous books Lane loves to write.

She’s been telling stories about sexy, funny, sometimes geeky and quirky men who find love for a dozen years now and loving every minute. In her previous life, she sat at a desk and dealt with numbers, so yes…romance is much more satisfying!

Lane loves tea, travel, and chocolate…in any order. Add a book and she’s set!

This is a short college love story. A lot of angst that isn’t real angsty, if you take into account how they go at it as if no one’s watching (which they are, lol)! But a HEA always seals the deal for me. And Gabe was a bit different than usual, so it wasn’t a clone of the general genre.

I really enjoyed this book! It was honestly quite refreshing from some others I've read. There was no huge, life threatening poot line. It was simple, and realistic. Details were kept true to life. The characters were believable with normal lives and normal fears. It was a great book to just pick up and enjoy reading. There were moments where the writing felt a lot more like telling than showing, but that's the only thing that popped out at me. The writing was awesome. I enjoyed the resolution. One of the best things was that the plot was done well, with it giving some little hints towards the ending that kept me in suspense for a little bit. One can guess from the description that there's going to be a couple, and I really enjoyed that the plot focussed on other issues that went along with that instead of the entire book revolving around just them getting together.
If anyone is considering reading it, go for it! It was a great afternoon read.

I've been reading this series out of order and that is fine to do, but I can see reading them in order would be great as well.

Out in the Deep is told in single POV which helps the reader keep characters separated in scenes more easily, especially in gay romance. But many times I miss the other character's internal input. That said, I enjoyed this story quite a bit because I particularly like stories that happen between MCs that are both athletes, and in this instance eventually on the same team. The banter was good with just the right amount of sexy times. Love this series a lot!

Out In the Deep by Lane Hayes is precisely the type of story I enjoy getting lost in. It's about two college athletes who are still closeted. While at first, they have a massive rivalry they soon have to find a way to work together since they both end up playing for the same team--> in more ways than one. :D

    Highlights:

-I love New Adult but admit to steering clear of them because sometimes authors throw so many problems that the angst feels unnecessary and forced. Derek and Gabe both have issues to resolve, but overall the story is low angst and has a feel-good vibe. I admit, I was worried there would be unnecessary ex-drama, but it didn't escalate to the point I thought it was going to. That would've ruined it for me so thankfully it didn't.

-Opposite personalities. Derek is type A and Gabe is more laid back, and I think they complimented each other well, both in and out of the pool.

-Bisexual. As a bisexual, I always love stories with bisexual representation.

-This story is cute, funny, and sweet.

-The chemistry between Derek and Gabe is palpable.

-The end, I bought into their happy ending; I felt it was believable.

    If you enjoy:

a sprinkle of enemies to lovers ✔
    sports romance ✔
    OFY ✔
    bisexual awakening ✔
    romance ✔
    feel-good vibe ✔

Then give this a go! Out In the Deep is a fantastic start to the Out in College series, I can't wait for the rest of the books.

    5 Stars!

A nice bi-awakening and coming out story between 2 college athletes. I love the writing, emotional and sweet. However the plot feels a bit formulaic. It's a standard falling in love and coming out story, with a touch of enemies to lovers trope, in a college sports setting. I can't help but wish there is more to the story and the characters. Nevertheless it's an enjoyable quick read.

This is a somewhat sweet enemies-to-lovers tale that takes place in the world of water polo, which we come to learn about and care about through the eyes of Derek (I think on the cover) and Gabe, his antagonist from another team who suddenly transfers to Derek's school to hone his skills for the Olympic trials.

That Derek is conflicted from the start by the fact that he starts to get these palpitations whenever he is in Gabe's presence, which he doesn't understand because he's always considered himself straight, plays right into the narrative that a lot of Gay4You tomes detail.

How he comes to realize he might be attracted to Gabe, and how Gabe comes to the conclusion that Derek is not an enemy but a possible boyfriend, is a bit convoluted but never without a smoothly detailed narrative. I thought the narrative could have improved, however, if we had some input from Gabe's POV, but whatever. This is a harmless and fairly quick read with lots of heat when it's called for.

I won't go into the synopsis much. Gabe and Derek are college water polo players who go from rivals to teammates to friends to soulmates. i was totally surprised at how much i loved Derek and Gabe's story. I don't read many college age books. Out in the Deep had a different feel though, ageless, timely, important yet never preachy. These two young men had reasons to be scared of being publicly out as gay athletes even in So-Cal where love is love is easily excepted. What could have been an angst fest was refreshingly played out with bravery and honesty. Derek and Gabe were perfect together, when they finally figured it out. Watching them both fall in love was why i read this genre. There was one point in the story though where you'll need tissue, my heart !!! Lane Hayes is a true story teller who never lets me down This book was romantic sexy, and heartwarming.
    Totally recommend.

Loved loved! I have never followed Water Polo but loved to see the dynamic of the sport. These two really had my heart. I loved the enemies to lovers vibe and first time awakening with these two. This is the first time I have read this author and ready to dive into the others!

As I was reading, I fell in love with Gabe and wanted his POV. Didn't get that but we got Derick's POV which was pretty great.
There was enough room for the story to include many things that were left out and I felt a bit shafted.
The characters were great! Both alpha and cocky. I enjoyed the dialogue.

The scenes were hot but would have liked to read Derecks experience to top.

Written from the viewpoint of the captain of the college water polo team this book traces his relationship with Gabe, another team member.

When competent, good - looking Gabe joins the college water polo team the team captain is initially jealous of the man's ability, he also secretly finds him sexually attractive. They meet at a party and alcohol fuels lust. The rest of the tale covers their mutual attraction and the difficulties associated with "coming out".
