Out in the End Zone: MM College Romance (Out in College Book 2) Kindle Edition

4.4 out of 5 stars 982 ratings

The football player, the cheerleader, and an indecent proposal…

Evan-

Football is the best. I had high hopes to play in the NFL one day, however, fate had other ideas and accidents happen. But that’s okay. I’ve learned the hard way to embrace change, take chances, and try things outside of my comfort zone…like agreeing to play fake boyfriends for someone else’s senior project.

Mitch-

My senior project is going to be amazing. I need it to be fabulous to get into grad school and I think my idea is brilliant. Everyone loves a slice of reality TV and a chance to stick their noses in someone else’s business. I doubt anyone will believe the hunky football player is my new boyfriend, but it’s worth a shot.

Out in the End Zone is a low-angst MM romance, bisexual coming out story. When the lines between reality and fiction blur, it may be time to face old demons and come out in the end zone.

One part sports romance, one part college romance and a splash of fake relationship on the side ... kept my interest, and the side characters were well-crafted.

Lane Hayes lives in sunny Southern California with her amazing husband, who thankfully doesn’t mind cooking, and their fabulous fox red Labrador, George, who’s pure mischief. Both provide oodles of inspiration for the low-angst, humorous books Lane loves to write.

She’s been telling stories about sexy, funny, sometimes geeky and quirky men who find love for a dozen years now and loving every minute. In her previous life, she sat at a desk and dealt with numbers, so yes…romance is much more satisfying!

Lane loves tea, travel, and chocolate…in any order. Add a book and she’s set!

Evan + Mitch = an absolutely delightful MM romance

Evan + Mitch = an absolutely delightful MM romance
I unabashedly love Lane's writing. She perfectly balances sweet and sexy in a way that is always genuine and never trite. I enjoyed this addition to the Out In College series even more than 'Out In The Deep' (which I thoroughly enjoyed), I think because I loved Evan's unwavering support for his best friend's coming out experience in bk1 & getting to watch him embracing his true self now. His love match with Mitch was both adorable and sexy AF and I loved how they interacted with each other through their public personas and private relationship. I'm really looking forward to 'Out In Offense'. 4.5/5 stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌙

Beautiful story telling and wonderful writing that bring the characters to life and give them breath. i enjoyed every page. Mitch and Evans' dynamics really have a really authentic feel for me and i loved how the relationship grows slowly and develops this awesome connection.

One of my favorite quotes is 'I felt like i was running onto a field without a helmet and had no idea what i was up against. But da*n it felt good.

Evan the football player and Mitch the yell leader. Sounds like a match made in heaven right? 😏 Loved the premise of Mitch’s senior project which of course put these two on the road to their HEA.

I absolutely love Evan. He’s open minded and sweet, with some severe past trauma that had him a bit broken. Mitch is out and proud, but I wanted to smack him when it came time for the rubber to meet the road so to speak. I get where he was coming from, but I still thought it was a d*ck move.

I liked that this story is low angst. Sometimes I like a bit of bi freak out, but right now I’m more for chill vs no chill. This author does an amazing job writing books that are chill, so if that’s what you are in the mood for, this book fits that bill.

This is the second book in the series and while it can be read as a standalone it's a good idea to read the previous one, too. Evan is friends with his roommate Derek, who's friends with Chelsea. While at a party Chelsea is throwing he finally takes the chance to approach Chelsea's out and proud gay best friend Mitch. Mitch is having a great time talking to Evan and proposes a project to him, which would help him get a great grade. Evan is all for it because it means he can spend more time with Mitch.
I really loved Mitch and Evan's story. They are quite the opposite in looks and interests, but they seem to deal well with their differences. Evan plays American Football and Mitch is in a cheerleader squad. In between going to classes and playing their sports they find time to talk and get to know each other. It's sweet, it's hot and it has a HEA.

I must say that I found the first chapter of this book one of the most confusing pieces of narrative prose I have read in a very long time. The story had all the 'usual' elements of a typical coming out story. As such there was not a great deal of originality, with exception of a rather different college assessment project. A lttle too formulaeic for my liking. However, others may find it quite satisfying.

Like the first book, this one suffers from a lack of alternating POV, with Evan (on the cover) as the narrator and Mitchell as the one who is being pursued. What's more, there's very little interaction between Evan the tight end/fullback and his roommate, Derek, the star water polo player who was the narrator of the first book.

Both Evan and Derek were portrayed as either straight, bi or bi curious while Mitchell and Derek's eventual boyfriend Gabriel are openly gay. Even though I don't like that kind of scenario, this works in these two books, but barely.

Then there is the very first chapter where Mitchell confronts his jealous soon-to-be ex-boyfriend Rory, whom you immediately suspect will be an MC in the next book (yup, sneak peek at the end of this one). Then there's a subtle insight into to another football player in a crucial locker room scene that tips you off that he will join Rory in the next one. Yup, squared.

The plot is silly, and the fluidity of Evan's sexual feelings are a bit too much like Derek's (both are being pursued by the same two girls throughout the two books). But I stuck with it whenever I needed a break from another book that had too much angst.

I'll get the next one, and hope for the best.

Loved this book! It was so refreshing to see a storyline in which the closeted guy was so honest and free with his affection and feelings toward his love interest from the very start. Compared with so many angsty plots in which a lead character's constant internal dialog of shame makes me want to tear my hair out in frustration and junk-punch them. In this book, Evan laid it all out there for Mitch and dived in with both feet, making for lots of hot and steamy scenes. Love!!

So many of my favorite tropes are all in this amazing story. Fake boyfriends, athletes, and coming out. I’m a huge sports fan, football in particular, so I was excited that Mitch’s story would be the next in the Out in College series.

Mitch is a football player, and not totally straight. Admittedly he’s probably “bi”. Evan is a cheerleader and is out and proudly gay. Mitch and Evan have always had the same circle of friends over the years, but haven’t really connected until they get to chatting at a party. Mitch asks Evan to participate in a project for school, essentially being fake boyfriends. As Evan spends more time with Mitch, he realizes he doesn’t want to be fake boyfriends and is decidedly bi. While Evan wants to be with Mitch, he has his own reasons for wanting to wait to come out. Mitch respects the fact that Evan needs to be ready, but he doesn’t want to be Evan’s fake anything.

I got all the feels with this book, I loved it and didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait for the next book in this amazing series -
    Out in Offense.

I enjoyed the story itself, I just prefer to have POVs from both MCs and we didn’t get that in this one. I would have loved to get Mitch’s inner thoughts, doubts, fears, feelings, but all we got was Evan’s. I don’t know if that’s just this author’s style or the author thought we didn’t need to see/experience things from the out and proud character, which, I feel is just as important if we do.

“Something in me screamed that this was how it was supposed to be. I could have this forever if I was brave.”

Mitch is out and proud and Evan is bi and not so out. He and Mitch know each other through mutual friends and mostly see one another at the parties that their mutual friend Chelsea throws. Even at the beginning it's cute how flustered Evan gets around Mitch! Mitch is working on a data collection project and it requires him needing an online fake boyfriend and gaging whether people buy into it or not and even though Evan isn't out he dives right in, he just wants to spend time with Mitch! All very cute!

I was enjoying this one and at the same time I wasn't. I became so torn.
    Likes and Dislikes:
+ Maryanne deserved more page time she is wonderful!
    - Lane's need to write a very particular type of female characters with the exception to one or two. Amanda, Amanda's friend at the party, Amanda's friend Nicole. Please, there's gotta be another way of getting their character across whether they are good, bad, or inbetween without feeling so contrived. All of them with their "manicured nails", overly flirtatious ways, and ability to pop up where Ev was. I beg you to stop. There's gotta be a middle ground somewhere for these characters.
+ Cuteness. Mitch and Evan are adorable together. Candy and flowers and cookies and just wanting to be so connected with each other and not being afraid to admit that to each other.
    - Evan. Lawd. He began to frustrate me. I loved him but also wanted to throttle him. I was not frustrated with his fear of coming out at all. His need to ignore things that could easily be sorted out on the other hand... He never once told Nicole straight up he wasn't interested. He skirted around it. Just say the words dude. And then if she continued after you that's on her. But also, while I hurt for what Evan went through, the moment he reveals it to Mitch didn't sit right with me. I felt like Mitch was struggling with some emotions but he had to push it aside because what Evan went through was so sad.
+ The project! I was liking that part of the story but do wish we could actually delve into it more.
    - Lack of dual POV. I think there's some moments where it's really needed. Even in the moment between Evan and Mitch that I already talked about maybe it wouldn't have felt so bad if I got to see Mitch's POV.
+ Seeing Derek & Ev have the conversation around what both of them have been dealing with as their stories kind of go side by side.
    - Saying that though I'm still not convinced of their friendship. We see very little of it.
+ The call with Evan's parents. His dad had me tearing up a little! Wish we could have seen his parents meeting Mitch and maybe even Mitch's grandma too!
+ epilogue cementing their Happily Ever After!

Probably gonna take a step back from this series for a bit. Some of the same issues for me have already cropped up in the first two so I don't want to get frustrated and burned out on the series. I'm sure I'll come back to it at some point!
