One night stands are all he can afford. If anyone learned of his ridiculous issues, they’d never understand. Until Aven lands on his doorstep, boldly asking for a date, clearly seeking more. But if Finnley can’t open up about his past and his struggles, will Aven decide he’s too much and walk away? Or will he provide the strength and support Finnley’s been looking for to finally admit he needs help?

Owl's Slumber is a hurt/comfort MM romance with moderate angst. It is the first in the Trials of Fear series but can be read as a standalone.

Beautiful Sleepy Owl
Going into this book I knew that Nicky was going to have me in tears at least once. I went in prepared. In true Nicky James fashion I was crying before I finished the prologue.I'm not sure how to express how I feel about this book. I've sat here for twenty minutes now listening to my music and just processing what I've spent the day reading.🦉Let's Start with our Owl, Finn. I couldn't imagine being afraid to simply fall asleep. I don't want to go into detail about what happened in the book but I will say that his fear was deep. It was amazing to watch this incredible story unfold. To witness this debilitating fear over something I never thought twice about. Just simply falling asleep.❤️Aven was so strong throughout this whole book. I thought for sure that....dangit.... I want to say more than I should.....He was so supportive and loving. Aven is the perfect book boyfriend.Nicky has this incredible gift of making her readers think. Not only is she giving us these amazingly emotional stories, she's spreading awareness about things people don't normally think twice about or have never even heard of. Falling asleep. It seems so simple. Yet, no matter how tired Finn was, he just couldn't willingly do it. The fear was too great.Read this book.... You will probably cry, most likely laugh and will be frustrated as hell at times. But, I promise you....it's worth it.I'm so excited for the next book... We get a hint at the end of this one what it's about. You get nothing from me. 🙂 Reeaaadd!!!!

What a terrible imagery yet in this thoroughly written book sad, but true. Of all the careers a romantic character could have - funeral home director / owner is not the one that comes to mind. Just the thought of what he did downstairs with the bodies gave the other MC the heebie jeebies - me too. I grew up scared of cemeteries. In my city all the cemeteries were fenced in, with the gates locked by 6:00 PM. Imagine my horror when I went down South and none of the cemeteries were fenced in. I was shocked, scared, and teased mercilessly by my cousins.

I attended funerals at a young age (First & Second grades) I saw them put my grandmother in the ground. Of course she was the one I watched horror movies with so I could conjure up all kinds of terrible things going on in the cemetery when it got dark. But never did I imagine what it would be like to grow up with the ...& Sons meant you had inherited a Funeral business. NO WAY! But our sensitive dutiful son determined not to let down his father, especially when deathbed promises were made.

I don't sleep well (at night). And I can't nap or I won't sleep at all. Being scared of the dark or memories of a scary movie is one thing, but being afraid of sleeping. Doing everything in your power to prevent it happening is another. Being in control until you weren't. Having a bag of Stay Awake tricks that worked for a long time until they didn't. Concealing the under eye bags until it was impossible to hide exactly how tired he was & the business - and the mounting pressure his boyfriend and another caring friend forced him to evaluate things.

Still no one was prepared for the harsh truth. Not even himself. But love, persistence, outside help, and a reevaluation of his priorities made him see a future that wasn't full of misery, loneliness, tiredness, instead something he eagerly strove for versus something he'd been trying to avoid. This was a remarkable book.

    I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I couldn’t understand Aven’s devotion, love, and patience with Finn’s problem, but that’s because I have never had such a caring person in my life who would tolerate any phobia.

I read this book with both curiosity and confusion because I never knew that there actually were people who could offer so much love and tolerance.

I think there are many people like me who have family that perceive phobias as a weakness.

This is a good story to read for those of us who can’t imagine that there are people who do care and love people with difficult mental health issues.

Odd rating I know but it felt right.

I did enjoy this story however I wish there had been a bit more to Aven. We never really got to know a lot about him other than his deep devotion to Finn which, while very sweet, just wasn't enough. My heart broke for Finn repeatedly, such a sweet soul hurt so young in a way that will have life lasting trauma.

There were also a lot of editing issues that took me away from the story. Overall this wasn't a bad story, just needs some cleaning up and a bit more balanced between the two mains.

Enjoyed more than I thought. My one complaint was the repetitiveness of Finn’s struggles in terms of how many times we saw it. I realize that’s a huge part of him but would’ve liked the story to move a little bit faster. Otherwise well done

Finn is the owner/director of a funeral home, he suffers from somniphobia, the fear of sleep and falling asleep. Due to careless words by his father, Finn developed the phobia at a young age. The nightly panic attacks, exhaustion, ulcer, shame and fear of others finding out had stalled his life. He was coping poorly through a combination of extreme caffeine, his obsession with Friends, and makeup to hide the exhaustion. Aven's stepfather passes and he arranges his funeral, where he meets the Finn. As they begin dating it becomes more and more apparent just how deep this phobia runs and how much it affects his life. Aven was such a rock to help steady Finn, it's sweet how much his love shines through.

As with other Nicky James books, I appreciate that there is no magical cure. That things can improve, there will be setbacks, but that through treatment and hard work they can eventually hope to be in a better, if never perfect place.

I did love the story, and I almost had the feeling that Finn's problem was so sever he might have had to be admitted to a psych hospital. The only reason this didn't get five was because of the little problems that keep cropping up with word usage, reliance on autocorrect and comma usage. The Oxford comma is wonderful--but it doesn't take much to make it a Captain Kirk soliloquy :)

Owl's Slumber by Nicky James turned out to be a fantastic heart stopping, brilliantly written book that gave me palpitations throughout. I had not heard of this phobia, Somniphobia, fear of sleeping.

Nicky James comes out with such amazing books that boggles your mind and teaches you something new every book you read of hers. A unique and well researched book, with lots of angst and right amount of romance. Her insights and authentic portrayal of her characters makes all her stories come to life.

My heart pained for (Owl) an apt name for Finley, and cheered for Aven's dedication and love to help Finley through this debilitating illness which could drive any one crazy with exhaustion, due to fear and lack of sleep day after day.
At some point in the book, I got upset with Finley's stubbornness and not being open in getting the treatment he so badly needed, but at the same time understood where his fear was coming from. If his father was not already dead I would have socked him.

Hats of to Aven for sticking around with patience and love and helping Finley through the treatment which enabled him to have some semblance of control of his phobia and life.

Can't wait to read the rest of the Trials of Fear books in this series. Though I loved this book as much I love reading all her books, I gave four stars, would have given 4.5 if allowed, because of the heart stopping palpitations, the one he experienced in the ER was the final straw, in spite of that, I just could not put the book down.

What a gut wrenching book, reading of Finn's terrible struggles was agony, this book was as painful and made me cry as much as Broken by Nicola Haken. Finn was cruelly treated by his father and paid dearly for it, Aven was an angel sent to him just in time, an absolute sweetheart, so patient and loving. Beautifully written, my first with this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Encore très bon livre signé Nicky James <3
Reviewed in France on July 13, 2018

I always come away from a Nicky James book feeling like I have learned something in the best way possible. I totally loved it from the first page to the last. It has heart stopping moments, its intense while still having humor. Loving and hot!!. Just beautiful. Freaking awesome. Highly recommended. 5 star plus plus plus plus plus
