Summer Fling (PLAYERS OF MARYCLIFF UNIVERSITY Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 1,339 ratings

If Cinderella were a college student, this football player might be her Prince Charming ...

Lance Kane has a reputation. You know the kind—he's hot, popular, and doesn't take the same girl out more than twice.

And for some reason she can’t figure out, Abby has caught his attention.

She’s everything he’s not—a wallflower who’d rather be alone than at the party where she literally ran into him, emptying her drink on them both.

But when he offers her an escape from the party she doesn't even want to be at, she's not about to turn him down.

What should only be one night of innocent fun soon turns into a summertime romance for the ages. Despite their determination to keep their relationship casual and light, real feelings develop on both sides.

The problem is, like Cinderella, there's a ticking clock counting down the days until the fairy tale will all be over. What will happen to them when the proverbial clock strikes midnight?

If you love opposites attract romances with hot football players and snarky heroines that give you all the feels, download Summer Fling today!

I’ve been on a Jerica MacMillan binge lately. She’s a relatively new author, and I am loving her subtle style and beautiful voice. Everything about her books is lovely. The writing flows smoothly, the story is well thought out, and her characters are real people dealing with real situations. In a world where the onslaught of self-publishing has inundated the market with all manner and levels of talent and experience, it's also refreshing as hell to read a book that has virtually no editing errors! (on that note, please forgive my horrendous editing of this review.) The care and love Ms. Macmillan puts into her stories are obvious. This is a huge plus for me. I thoroughly enjoyed her Rebound Series (Rebound Therapy and Rebound Envy). But her writing absolutely shines in her New Adult series, Players of Marycliff University. I have a weakness for New Adult stories that revolve around campus life and this series promises to be great. Summer Fling is book one. Book two, Convenient Fall, releases May 16.

Abby would prefer to stay home and read, watch tv, or do homework than be dragged to another party by her BFF/roommate, Megan. But, rather than submit to one more lecture that will most likely include the words uptight, old maid, and live a little, Abby gives in. And, just as she predicted it’s the same old, same old. Loud, drunk, obnoxious people crowded into a house like sardines in a can. To top it off, some jerk just bumped into her, dumping her Jack & Coke down the front of her new tank top. Nice.

Lance is highly amused when the cute, petite blond tries to muscle him aside at the kitchen sink. She’s a spitfire; all business and snark as she tries to clean herself up from what looks like an entire Solo cup of spilled Coke. When she’s knocked against him, the remainder of her drink spilling all over his shirt, he uses the opportunity to put on the charm. He's used to girls falling all over him. He was on the football team at Marycliff until he graduated a few months ago, but the jersey chasers haven’t backed off. Lance has a rep as a player. He’s not interested in dating or seeing a girl more that twice. Which he sticks to even more now that his time in Spokane is almost up. He’s obligated to go back to Texas and take over his dad’s mechanic shop whether he wants to or not. And he’s not looking forward to it. He has time for one more fling before he leaves and this cutie looks promising. She appears to have no idea who he is, and doesn’t even seem interested! A challenge just might be fun.

Abby and Lance are an unlikely couple yet there's a strong attraction that goes beyond the physical. Ms. MacMillan writes it beautifully. It’s also handled in a very believable way. Abby is not one for flings or casual sex. Her home life wasn’t all roses and Barbie dolls. She’s still playing parent to her dysfunctional mom. School is her ticket out of that dismal existence and she’s not going to throw it away for some player/jock. On the other hand, casual sex is Lance’s norm. Initially, Abby poses a challenge. However, Lance finds himself wanting to spend more time with her, go on dates, the whole deal. He knows he’s leaving in a few weeks but there's something about this girl that makes him want to wipe away that serious look she constantly uses as armor, dig deeper and find out who she really is. Much to his surprise, Lance is beginning to develop feelings for Abby.

Summer Fling will melt your heart. It will also get your pulse pounding. It’s a charming page-turner that not only kept me riveted, it had me invested in Lance and Abby’s lives. As they work their way through real life obligations versus their desire for each other, I felt it all. I love that their romance is slow to build. It’s so true to character for Abby, and it’s fantastic to see Lance care enough to honor and respect her feelings. Abby’s and Lance’s roommates add humor and fun with their observations and advice. Summer Fling is a beautifully written, from-the-heart novel loaded with emotion, great dialogue, humor, and sizzle. I highly recommend you get to know Jerica MacMillan’s work!

Idaho author Jerica MacMillan is a romance writer who has published thirteen books and some sets or bundles of her various series of books. She lives in north Idaho and warms her self and her readers with sweet chick lit romances that infuse enough erotica to keep everyone happy.

SUMMER FLING is Book 1 in her Players of Marycliff University and throughout this first book she gathers that spiky college attitude that makes for a fun read. We meet her main character Abby in medias res in the first lines of the book – ‘“Hey! Watch it!” The jerk that bumped into Abby didn’t even bother turning around when she yelled at him. He’d made her spill her drink, and now Jack and Coke was splashed all over her hand, bare legs, and new sandals. “Great. What a jerk.” Switching her cup to her left hand and shaking the excess liquid from her right, she started to weave her way through the crowd of drunken Marycliff University students to find the kitchen. She’d somehow let Megan convince her that coming to the party would be fun. She’d even made a token effort—a flowy lightweight tank with spaghetti straps, her favorite denim shorts that showed off her legs, and her new strappy sandals. Sandals that were now covered in liquor and soda, and would probably be sticky once they dried. Megan had abandoned her over an hour ago, shortly after they’d gotten their drinks. Abby had seen her doing body shots a little later, and the last time she’d seen Megan she had been making out with a guy against the wall in the hallway. Abby could only imagine what had happened since. She finally managed to get to the kitchen, which was just as crowded as everywhere else. A breakfast bar with cups and drinks laid out dominated the room. The real attention grabber was the keg and the idiot doing the keg stand. Abby elbowed her way through the crowd, trying to get to the sink so she could try to clean up a little. She didn’t feel like spending the rest of the night sticky….’

But the story is tight – ‘One summer is all they have ...Lance is a notorious player on and off the football field who never sees a girl more than twice. But with graduation now behind him, his days of carefree flirting are numbered. As soon as his summer internship is over, his parents expect him to return to Texas to take his place in the family business. He's done everything he can to delay the inevitable, and he's determined to live it up his last summer as his own man. Abby comes from a world where men don't stick around. Lance's interest does nothing but put her on guard, especially when she finds out he'll be leaving in less than two months. With two years left of college and a mom who relies on her for everything, Abby doesn't have the patience for relationships that are doomed from the start. But Lance's persistence wears down her defenses. Abby convinces herself they'll just have a summer fling, and she'll be able to come through unscathed. Will Abby be able to maintain her distance? Or will they both be heartbroken when the summer ends?’

Solid Chick Lit romance with enough steam to satisfy. Grady Harp, December 17

Summer Fling (Players of Marycliff University Book1) by Jesica MacMillon
    rated 5 stars

Summer Fling sucked me in from the beginning and didn't let go! I probably could have read it in one day but sadly I had to work and sleep a little.
I thought it was cute how Lance was insecure about Abby at the beginning. He had serious doubts in his head! I loved how gentlemanly he was towards her and always thinks about how he doesn't want to scare her away. I also enjoyed how he figured out how to get her to go out on a "date" with him each time. It left a little smile on my face! When she snubs him the first time he tries to kiss her....Lance is flummoxed! I mean who WOULDN'T want to kiss him? He is popular, good looking and from the football team!
Abby is kinda funny in how she treats Lance. She doesn't NOT like him but isn't sure she should either. So she treats him with indifference and he really has to work hard just to have a conversation with her. She also is quite snarky and sassy with him.
Her relationship with her friend Megan is so so girlish! I love how they help each other when it's needed. Then add in Chris and Matt, Lances roommates, and fun things happen. The boys look out for Lance and Megan looks out for Abby. I loved their group hug! It was nice to see the boys affected also.
I laughed, teared up and chuckled throughout this book. The writing flowed and kept my interest through the book. I have not read this author before but I will be checking out more from her!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow!!! Sweet, sassy and sexy all wrapped up in one heart-warming tale!
Reviewed in Canada on April 5, 2017
Ok, this was so sexy yet heart-warming, I'm literally a puddle of goo! I loved reading Lance and Abby's story. They don't expect much more than a summer fling, but they didn't account for their hearts getting involved.

This is my first book by Jerica MacMillan and I LOVED it! Her writing hooks you in and has you on an emotional roller coaster along with her characters. It's real, sexy, sassy and sweet all at the same time. Dual POV's help to capture Lance and Abby's voice and you'll either be swooning, laughing out loud or waiting with baited breath for what comes next! A definite must read for those who enjoy a sweet and sexy New Adult romance that depicts what happens when love steps in and "flings" are out!

I look forward to the next book in the series and seeing what's next for Matt, Megan and Chris!

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning to Trust & Taking Chances
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 27, 2017
Summer Fling by Jerica MacMillan is book 1 of the Players of Marycliff University series and can be read as a standalone.

“And that smile was enough to turn any girl on, which was why she kept being snarky at him whenever he flashed it at her. She didn’t normally react to guys like she did to him.” - Abby

Abby wasn't like any girl Lance had shown an interest in before and I think having to work to gain her trust and get close gave him the opportunity to get to know her better; this isn't something he'd ever really done with a girl before and getting to actually know her, made him want to hang around and be in her life. Lance’s persistence and caring nature towards Abby helped to show her that not all guys are the same and that there are some good ones out there who will stay around and give you the love you need. Abby and Lance are a couple who you will find yourself falling in love with and hoping they last longer than just the summer. You can see that they're destined to be together and need what each other brings to the relationship. I liked how they challenged each other, which allowed them to grow closer and become more than just a casual fling.

This is the second book I've read by Jerica MacMillan and I loved it just as much as False Assumptions, book 6 of this series. I love that each book of the series seems to deal with different subjects and isn't just a repeat of the same plots again and again like some series can be. I find Jerica MacMillan’s books enjoyable to read as they flow effortlessly and allow me to become involved in what's happening rather than trying to figure out the characters or complicated storylines. I love Jerica MacMillan’s writing style and will definitely be keeping up to date with the rest of this series.
