What I will say is that Jay McLean has once again provided a young love story where you can’t help but root for the characters. A story where so many forms of love are happening, and where you will feel that broad range of emotions and heart that Jay is a master of. Holden is someone that you’ve probably already half fallen for if you’ve read Leo (freaking go read Leo, right now!) and in ‘Pieces of You’ you will fall the rest of the way if you haven’t already. He’s the fun and carefree Holden we met in Leo, but he’s also so much more. We get another layer of him that we didn’t get to experience fully in Leo. Jameson. Sigh. Jameson. She is just such an easy character to fall for. Her strength, her wit, her reluctant softness. She has so much going on and really she is such a different person and has lived such a different life than Holden. All that said, I love the way these two are so effortlessly at ease with each other and how they come to be. It was trope-y greatness and just you wait. Anyway.     Really? The ending! I just can’t. It doesn’t even matter to me what comes next in book 2. I can not give this one 5 stars with an ending like that. I get it, you want to be sure I read the next one, and you’ve suceeded. But still, a heart can only take so much and still be able to gift 5 stars. Mine is just too battered after that. (Pun intended. Because bad jokes are my drawing.)

    Jamie drew me into this story right away. She is so broken, yet so strong at the same time. She is such a mystery and I really wanted to know her story.

    ”She's like... a riddle. A paradox. An incomplete picture. It's as if she only gives people fragments of herself. Pieces. I can't help but smile. Jameson Taylor is like a puzzle. And I've always liked puzzles.”

    Jamie and Holden start out insulting each other every chance they get. When forced to work together for a school project, they slowly start to get to know a little more about each other. Their non-friendship eventually develops into something more than friends when they can no longer resist the pull between them. I loved watching them get to know each other and their banter. Holden was so sweet for her, despite his normal playboy ways. Jamie has had to grow up and take care of herself so young and she finds it hard to let others in. She never wants to be in a place where she has to rely on anyone else. When Holden gets scared of his feelings they break things off. Weeks later, when they finally get a chance to talk, Jamie’s past comes back in a big way. I can’t wait to read where their story takes them next.

    I read this book last year and didn’t get around to my review, but I have just finished a reread in preparation for reading Pieces of Me and so figured I’d post a review now. Also, I am obsessed with the formatting of the pages at the beginning of the chapters in the paperback 😍

    “And there’s not a single piece of me that sees you the way you see yourself.”

    Firstly, Jay’s books seem to be the ones I can binge in a day because I find myself so captivated by the story and I absolutely love her writing and how she has intertwined the characters across her books. I loved the little references we got to Mia and that, if you’ve read Leo, you already know a little about Holden too.

    “I’d just created the backdrop so the birds had something beautiful to look at, somewhere to call home. I wanted to be the birds. I wanted to fly. Far away from everything in the world that kept me grounded.”

    Jamie was forced to grow up way before her time due to the loss and trauma in her past. Holden is dealing with his own issues as well as trying to be there for his best friend.

    “And maybe I had it wrong. Maybe Holden Eastwood isn’t the flame to my moth. Maybe he’s the moon. The light. Guiding me out of my darkness.”

    I remember that cliffhanger so vividly that I kind of wanted to just skip it to avoid the feeling of my heart being torn again and start straight on Pieces of Me.

    Definitely do not read this book if you hate enjoying a story so much you lose touch with your own reality, if you don’t love falling in love with characters, if you don’t want to laugh out loud, if you don’t want to be shocked and dying for the next instalment.     Pieces of You is truly a beautiful and heartfelt book. Jamie and Holden are two such unique and deep characters you don’t often encounter. Their love story is passionate and heartbreaking. It really is beautiful.

    The storyline of Jamie and Holden holds so much emotions and is so deep and heartfelt, I couldn’t stop reading. It truly is a masterpiece… and now I’m on to the second book in this duet… Pieces of Me, because this duet literally did take a piece of me.

    If there is one thing I would be able to absolutely guarantee, it’s that NOBODY writes NA/YA like Jay McLean. Pieces of You is book one in this brand new duet and to say I need book two, like, yesterday… is the understatement of the century. The cover of this books is absolutely gorgeous and any reader would be lucky to have this on their bookshelf.
    The way Jay McLean is able to capture the reader from the very first sentence of this book. Jay then pulls the reader slowly through her carefully crafted journey of emotion, angst, depth, hurt, humour, friendship, and love, which leaves the reader with a belly full of butterflies, a mind filled with vivid images of the story playing out like a movie or a tv series, and a deep, soul connection to her characters who will stay with you for the rest of your life.

    Pieces of You is an outstanding start to this new duet and I am so thankful that Jay has blessed the book world with Holden’s story after he had such a memorable impact and presence in her previous release, Leo. I adore him and everything he brings to this story. But for me, Jamie is the highlight of this book and I feel so emotional every time I think of her. Her character is so true. So sincere. Real and relatable. Beautiful. She is the girl you want to win. The girl you want to be your best friend. The girl who you want to hug and tell that everything’s going to be alright.

    This book is absolutely beautiful, and I cannot wait for the second book in this duet to complete the final piece to Holden and Jamie’s puzzle.
