A story where so many forms of love are happening, and where you will feel that broad range of emotions and heart that Jay is a master of. Holden is someone that you’ve probably already half fallen for if you’ve read Leo (freaking go read Leo, right now!) and in ‘Pieces of You’ you will fall the rest of the way if you haven’t already. He’s the fun and carefree Holden we met in Leo, but he’s also so much more. We get another layer of him that we didn’t get to experience fully in Leo. Jameson. Sigh. Jameson. She is just such an easy character to fall for. Her strength, her wit, her reluctant softness. She has so much going on and really she is such a different person and has lived such a different life than Holden. All that said, I love the way these two are so effortlessly at ease with each other and how they come to be. It was trope-y greatness and just you wait. Anyway.     Really? The ending! I just can’t. It doesn’t even matter to me what comes next in book 2. I can not give this one 5 stars with an ending like that. I get it, you want to be sure I read the next one, and you’ve suceeded. But still, a heart can only take so much and still be able to gift 5 stars. Mine is just too battered after that. (Pun intended. Because bad jokes are my drawing.)

    I read this book last year and didn’t get around to my review, but I have just finished a reread in preparation for reading Pieces of Me and so figured I’d post a review now. Also, I am obsessed with the formatting of the pages at the beginning of the chapters in the paperback 😍

    “And there’s not a single piece of me that sees you the way you see yourself.”

    Firstly, Jay’s books seem to be the ones I can binge in a day because I find myself so captivated by the story and I absolutely love her writing and how she has intertwined the characters across her books. I loved the little references we got to Mia and that, if you’ve read Leo, you already know a little about Holden too.

    “I’d just created the backdrop so the birds had something beautiful to look at, somewhere to call home. I wanted to be the birds. I wanted to fly. Far away from everything in the world that kept me grounded.”

    Jamie was forced to grow up way before her time due to the loss and trauma in her past. Holden is dealing with his own issues as well as trying to be there for his best friend.

    “And maybe I had it wrong. Maybe Holden Eastwood isn’t the flame to my moth. Maybe he’s the moon. The light. Guiding me out of my darkness.”

    I remember that cliffhanger so vividly that I kind of wanted to just skip it to avoid the feeling of my heart being torn again and start straight on Pieces of Me.

    Wow this book was so good. It takes you through a emotional journey between to young teens who never knew what love is. This book pulled me in after just a few paragraphs and had me laughing then pulling at my heart strings at what these two characters were dealing with. Fair warning this book ends on the most brutal cliffhanger possible. I can't wait for the next book.
    These characters were so complex the more the story evolves. You don't just have the big jock guy who likes to party and never wants to grow up that we first see. Also you don't have just a girl who dresses differently and uses words as her defense mechanism to everyone around her. No we get so much more like a guy who is scared to love because he seen to many things happen to the people he loves the most and doesn't think he can even love any more. No you get a girl who has faced unthinkable circumstances in her life only to keeping forward and holds so many walls up that if one breaks they all break. These two fall into a routine that slowly evolved into a relationship that neither seem to notice until it ends before they truly know why it's ending.
    This book has laughs, emotional moments, and a cliffhanger that will have you screaming no are you serious and needing more. I definitely recommend it if you want some complex characters with so many emotions that you won't want to put the book down.

    Be prepared. I mean, I know we should all be prepared bc this is book 1 in a duet, so of course it's the heartbreaking half. It's why I waited to read it until I had the second half, so I can go right into the next part of the story!

    Still, I wasn't quite prepared for that ending...

    Holden & Jamie are complicated. I love Holden's heart, and he's mature in some ways but very much not in others. Jamie has been forced to grow up in different ways so early in life. Together, they help each other begin to heal and learn, but it's definitely just a beginning.

    And now I need to run some errands & then dive in to part 2 of this heartwrenching story!!

    If there is one thing I would be able to absolutely guarantee, it’s that NOBODY writes NA/YA like Jay McLean. Pieces of You is book one in this brand new duet and to say I need book two, like, yesterday… is the understatement of the century. The cover of this books is absolutely gorgeous and any reader would be lucky to have this on their bookshelf.
    The way Jay McLean is able to capture the reader from the very first sentence of this book. Jay then pulls the reader slowly through her carefully crafted journey of emotion, angst, depth, hurt, humour, friendship, and love, which leaves the reader with a belly full of butterflies, a mind filled with vivid images of the story playing out like a movie or a tv series, and a deep, soul connection to her characters who will stay with you for the rest of your life.

I adore him and everything he brings to this story. But for me, Jamie is the highlight of this book and I feel so emotional every time I think of her. Her character is so true. So sincere. Real and relatable. Beautiful. She is the girl you want to win. The girl you want to be your best friend. The girl who you want to hug and tell that everything’s going to be alright.

    This book is absolutely beautiful, and I cannot wait for the second book in this duet to complete the final piece to Holden and Jamie’s puzzle.
