Poodle Versus The Butcher (Cottage Country Cozy Mysteries Book 5) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 78 ratings

Oh, deer! It moose be hunting season!

Falling leaves, clear crisp morning, early snow flurries in the forecast… Autumn has arrived in Williamsport and the annual hunting season has opened.

Zora Flynn, owner of the local newspaper, has planned a series of stories about hunting in cottage country. But when she stumbles on two corpses before the first interview, it’s obvious that more than wild game has been killed.

Sonny Rigg, a teenage delinquent with a long history of foolish shenanigans, is making a big effort to redeem himself. But he’s the number one suspect in the latest murder.

Zora is worried. She believes that, instead of being the culprit, Sonny is likely the killer’s next target. Against their better judgment, Zora and the reporters set out to clear Sonny's name and bring the real killer to justice.

Across all the crime-fighting, Zora and Rocco, her pampered prince of a poodle, end up homeless. A raucous moose-calling contest has unexpected results. And a murderer tracks Zora and those closest to her. You won’t want to put this story down!

I love writing every day and the result so far is four mystery series, and counting. I’ve been retired from teaching for a couple of years, and am totally immersed in my new career as a mystery writer. I hope you enjoy the results!

New in Spring 2023! The Elk Ridge Murder Mysteries follow Inspector Hilary Casgrain in a sensational new crime fiction series! It's a spinoff from my most popular books, the Port Alma Murder Mysteries.

The longer Poodle Versus… series is a reader favorite. Small-town action, zany characters, and a Nasty Small Poodle will capture your heart in these cozy mysteries.

The Murder In Season trilogy features injured detective constable Claire Beckett.

I have enjoyed Anne’s work. The plots are interesting with plenty of twists and turns. The mix of characters are downright fun especially Rocco. In this story, Zora and the reporters are supposed to attend the annual autumn hunting season in Williamsport. Since they are planning on a series of stories about hunting, they decided to go to the hunt cabin for interviews where they discover two corpses before then even interview anyone. Who was murdered and why? Sonny is trying to turn a new leaf with his life but gets thrown into the murder investigation. As Zora investigates, a storm brews, the newspaper office catches on fire, and knowing better, Zora and the reporters decide to help clear Sonny’s name. There are a number of suspects and Zora must rule out the innocent ones. This was an enjoyable book which you will not be disappointed.
I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

While the murder does focus on a death at a hunting camp, it adds to the scenes, but is written from the point of view of a local newspaper’s staff. They go to get the story of how moose hunting works as the season is opening, but, find a dead moose and a body. The staff is hilarious and the poodle doesn’t play as big a part as some fictional pets, however, he is always on the scene when there is trouble.
I read an earlier book in the series so was glad to grab this, the fifth for $0.99. It is a series worth following. The owner of the paper is an older woman and she is discovering love; something she had thought would never happen for her.

I'm really loving this series, and the latest book is another winner. The Poodle Versus the Butcher is funny, well-written, has a great plot line and further development of several regular characters. I also love that it's a clean book that keeps you interested without swearing, extensive murder descriptions or sex scenes. I'm hoping there's many more books to come.

I received this as an ARC book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Rocco always adds fun to Zora’s antics! Zora has planned to write a series of articles about moose hunting for the paper. When they go to interview some men about their hunting camp they find two dead bodies - only one of them is a moose! There are several twists and turns in finding the killer. There are some funny things that happen to them. All of the “Poodle Versus ...”books are fun to read. I think you will enjoy reading this book.

An interesting and exciting story. Likeable characters, a Superdog, beautiful scenery, and a clean romance with the emphasis on the crime and not the romance (who reads a murder mystery for the sex?). I've read the whole series and they just keep getting better and better. I can't wait for the next one!

A fun cozy starring Zora and her poodle Rocco. Friends share in laughter and solving this mystery of a victim.Zora finds herself joining in a Moose call contest and rescuing her four leg pal from a fire.

Zora Flynn, editor of the Williamsport Whistle, the local newspaper and her two reporters Olivia Park and Brady Kozak are at a Williamsport hunting camp to interview the members about the opening of Moose hunting week. Suddenly, Sonny Rigg and his girlfriend Tegan Jamison came running from one of the trailers. When they saw Zora, Sonny told her she needed to call Chief Kornhonen, that his Uncle Elmer (Gismo) Rigg had been killed.

This was the start of another mystery. Zora and her Poodle Rocco, along with her reporters and her special friend, Darius Bell on the hunt for the killers. Several events happen, a fire at the newspaper office where Zora had to rescue Rocco from her smoke filled apartment, a Moose calling contest and a car chase and crash of Zora's RAV to finally finding the killers.

It is another funny but great Cosy Mystery in the Poodle VS series. Can't wait for the next one.

I received this book free for my review of same.

Zora Flynn and Rocco, her poodle, are involved in another murder. When Zora, the editor of the Williamsport Whistle, and her reporters go to a local hunting camp to gather background for a story, they find a body or two. Gizmo, Sonny Riggs's uncle, is dead. Was our local troublemaker involved? Zora vows to find the truth. She doesn't think he did it. I was impressed by the change in Sonny. Our bad boy has changed. I always enjoy Zora's investigations. She's a savvy sleuth with a nose for trouble. The Prince is her perfect side kick. He's there to protect our heroine. I enjoy all the characters and the cases. The dialogue makes me smile. It's snarky and sassy. The setting may be picturesque but there isn't a dull minute in this small town. I can't wait to see what trouble they will get into next.
