She is also the acclaimed editor of Gothic, Fantasy and Horror anthologies (e.g. Among the Headstones: Creepy Tales from the Graveyard) and author of the bestselling Writer’s Craft series for advanced-level writers, including and the bestselling Writer’s Craft series e.g. Writing Gothic Fiction Writing Scary Scenes, Writing Vivid Settings, Writing Vivid Dialogue, Writing Vivid Characters, Writing Deep Point of View.

Her lucky black rescue cat Sulu often accompanies her when she explores spooky derelict buildings. He delights in walking across shattered roof tiles, scratching charred timbers and sniffing at long-abandoned hearths. He even senses the presence of ghosts… but that’s another story.
Rayne has worked as an investigative journalist, development aid worker, museum guide, apple picker, tarot reader, adult education teacher, belly dancer, magazine editor, publishing manager and more, and now writes full time.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2023Rayne Hall’s books are always well crafted with quick examples, deep dives into topics, explanations that make sense, and the do’s and don’ts of self-editing your novel.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 9, 2021Although this book is very short, it is equally concise and well presented. The tips are appropriate and easy to apply. Well done.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2022Very insightful as always with Rayne. One of the things I was still struggling with was pacing and this helps it make sense that slow and fast work together just in the right places.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 24, 2020I enjoyed reading this. The pages flew by. Everything was kept short, simple, and digestible. I've written a science-fiction action novel prior to reading this, and on my own I seem to have hit the majority of the hints and tips provided. It's good to see what I did instinctively has a good underlying foundation. And I read about a couple of ideas I did not know about, or know too well.
I'm reading another book in this series, and plan to get my hands on a third. Would recommend.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2019This is the type of Rayne Hall book that I like the best. It is more a writing workbook designed to help stretch our writing muscles than a focused collection of tips to read. The book is short in terms of pages but long in what it can teach you.
Ms. Hall concentrates on pacing, and unlike many other authors of how-to-write books, she has you grab one of your already written manuscripts rather than create something new. After all, this is about improving your writing and investing in something you have already created is time worth spending. Each chapter takes an element of writing (sentence length, flashbacks, euphonics, etc.) and then teaches us how each tool can positively (or negatively!) affect the pacing of a novel. Be ready to get your hands dirty as you work on improving your fast- and slow-paced scenes.
Ms. Hall issues a caution in the Introduction, informing us that the book is intended for advanced writers (her concern is that less experienced writers may concentrate on the techniques and neglect the storytelling). If you are not sure or don’t feel you may be ready yet, she has plenty of other books and I am sure you can find a number of them that will apply directly to whatever you like to write about.
I have been a devotee of Rayne Hall’s books for a while now, and have yet to find one that is a disappointment. “Fiction Pacing” deserves five stars and more.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2019The way to use words - verb, nouns, adverbs and so one is very enlightening. Can't miss with this book or truthfully any of her other books. No long drawn out stories before telling how to use something to write better. Just information that improves your writing so your imagination can come through readable.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 18, 2020The author gives some good techniques for judging and correcting the pace of a work in progress at its first rewrite stage. Read it al before starting to rewrite sections because it delves into the integrtaed pacing of your WIP. I write paranormal and speculative fiction, so the pace varies from thrillers, romance, and mysteries.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 16, 2019A common problem as you become more skilled with your writing is most "how too" books are geared towards newbies. After a while, you find yourself reading dozens of books just to glean a single useful new tip. Unless you want to cough up serious cash to attend an MFA program, at some point, improving your skillset becomes a touch-or-go prospect.
Rayne Hall has tackled this problem by gearing this latest installment in her "Writers Craft" series towards practical, hands-on exercises to tackle any pacing problems, along with dozens of workshops to help you improve your latest W.I.P. I've been struggling with revising a flawed (pacing wise) manuscript for a while now, so I got to put a lot of the exercises in this book to good use and finish my revisions. Recommend!

5.0 out of 5 stars Eccellente.
Certamente me li procurerò tutti. Da non perdere.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book on pacing of novel.
It’s given me an understanding of in depth concepts in pacing of a novel.
It’s one of the best books I read in the last half a decade on the subject of writer’s craft.
There is no match for the suggestions given in this book. If we can follow them, we can definitely convey best messages to the world thru our novel crafting skills in positive sense.
Sincere thanks to Mr. Rayne Hall for writing this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars This will have a huge impact on your writing.
I have read a number of books in this series now. Although some of the content does overlap, each book has really helped me to hone specific skills. This series is the most practical I have come across.

5.0 out of 5 stars All the pieces in a row
It's important to know how to pace out the story, and each section in this book outlines it clearly and well. The purpose is clearly defined and the results are measurable.
It's short, but once finished you can get back to storytelling fast and put it all into practice where it's needed.
I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to a writer who's in the throes of refining a work.
