Review - Parental Guidance
Title Parental Guidance Author Avery Flynn Description from Amazon It wasn’t me.It was my team. But as almost co-captain I raised my hand to fix it. Never imagined they’d arrange a PR stunt to make me look like Mr. Right to someone my mom picks out on some new dating app. Then my salvation walks into the restaurant. Zara Ambrose. The five-foot-nothing redhead with more freckles than inches that I convinced to go on five dates with me for all the world to see. She’s got her own reasons for our set up–and her own rules. But somewhere between the couples’ obstacle course, wrestling matches with her Great Dane, and fights over mashed potatoes, Zara went from means-to-an-end to something so much more. What happens when you start to fall for the one girl you can’t have…on live TV? Initial Thoughts I was looking for a short rom-com and this popped up on either my Kindle Recommendations or possibly Instagram (I really don’t remember). Some Things I Liked Comedy and banter. I loved the back and forth between the main characters. I thought their openness and dialogue was hilarious. References to pop culture. I love when books reference other things I love. (Yes, I’m talking about Law and Order. Basically all I do when I’m not reading or writing is watch crime dramas). One Thing I Wasn’t Crazy About This book was not YA. Not even a little. It was definitely adult fiction due to some strong themes. It was a little too much for me and I would not advise this book for anyone under 18. Series Value This book was a spin-off of another series written by Avery Flynn. I have not read that and I didn’t think it was an issue here. From what I understand, the rest of this series is about other members of the Ice Knights hockey team so they could also be read as stand alone novels. I like that in a series. It makes me feel like I have options. However, if you are planning on reading all of the books, start with the first as there will likely be subtle spoilers in the other books. Final Thoughts I liked this book. I thought it was a relatively fun read. It was short and didn’t take me long to finish it. I’m not sure if I’d continue with the series. If given an ARC, maybe. Or even if it was one sale, I might. This story was cute and since it’s finished (the next book is about someone else), I’m ok with not continuing. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Recommendations for Further Reading The Christmas Countdown by Donna Ashcroft – if you like cute, rom-coms, check out this book. Coming Home to Glendale Hall by Victoria Walters – if you’re looking for a Christmas-y rom-com give this book a try. Please note, this book is much more appropriate for younger audiences.

This is a sweet and fun book - it's funny, emotional, sexy, and honest. The main characters are interesting and well-written. If I knew Zara and Caleb in 'real life' I'd want to be their friends. // Caleb is a professional hockey player, and Zara in an artist (a miniaturist). Those professions are well described. Also as another reviewer has mentioned the issue of 'boys will be boys' in professional sports is a major part of the story. The conversations this issue creates in the book also conforms to and enhances today's ideas about overcoming this issue in society. // The secondary characters are well defined too, especially the parents. As a reader I was able to relate to how Caleb's mother, and Zara's father have both shaped the characters and lives of their children. // Zara has a terrific best friend, Gemma. During the story with the help of the secondary characters such as Gemma, and Caleb's mother and team-mates the misunderstandings between Zara and Caleb are realistically resolved. Avery Flynn has a way with her characters - making them realistic and relatable. Now I have to go and find more of her books to read.

What a fun read! I’m a sucker for romcoms and all things sports so when Parental Guidance by Avery Flynn was chosen as our April #COYER Book Club read I knew I had to read it. This is the first book in her series Ice Knights which is a spinoff of two series Harbor City and The Hartigans. I have not read those, but plan to now that I’ve read this one. Parental Guidance is an unconventional romance featuring two opposites that have more in common than they realize.

The book opens with Caleb Stuckey, a defenseman for Harbor City’s Ice Knights, and he’s been called to the coach’s office, somewhere you don’t want to be. An unfortunate incident with some rookie players caught on camera has caused a PR nightmare for the team, and the coach places the responsibility squarely on Caleb’s shoulders. To fix it, the coach, their PR rep, and Caleb’s mom have come up with a solution. Caleb is going to join Bramble, a new dating app that gives the parents control, and do PR videos with the date his mom chooses after each of their first five dates.

Poor Caleb! I adore him. He is genuinely an all-around good guy. He worked hard for the position he has on the team, and this has thrown him. He isn’t a relationship kind of guy. The last thing Caleb wants going into preseason is dating a woman he didn’t choose. However he’ll do what is necessary for his fellow teammates. Caleb wants to fit in after enduring years of teasing while in school. He has dyslexia, which made him a target when he was young. This anxiety still follows him as an adult which made me want to reach through the pages and hug him.

Zara Ambrose is a miniatures artisan and conned into joining Bramble by her best friend and dad. She’s a workaholic who doesn’t trust easily. She has no time for men or dating, especially when growing up she couldn’t rely on her own father. With her own issues to work out and a big auction to work on, Zara has zero time for a real relationship. At first, I was a little concerned that I wouldn’t like Zara. She comes across harsh at first, but I quickly fell in love with her snark.

Zara and Caleb strike a deal during their first date and set up boundaries for their Bramble dating. Caleb needs her to help the public forget the viral video, and Zara needs her cobwebs cleared if you catch my meaning 😉 Rules are meant to be broken, and I love reading their interactions. The chemistry between the characters bounces from steamy to sweet and back again. I really rooted for them right from the start. Flynn’s writing style drew me into the story, and I really enjoyed the dual POV.

Overall, I really enjoyed Parental Guidance. The unique circumstances the characters find themselves in and how they resolve it left me smiling. This was my first Avery Flynn book, and it won’t be my last. I highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys a little comedy with their romance.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! It was cute, it was funny, and sexy where it needed to be.

Zara...such a sassy and snarky, red-headed spitfire...not afraid to tell it like it is.

Caleb...so sexy, caring, looks at the bright side of everything... and he says the swooniest things!

Both of them sign up for the Bramble dating app.
Their parents get to choose who they go on five dates with.

    Five dates.
    That’s it.
    Five and done.

Both are using those 5 dates as a way to get something... not a relationship though. No way. Not gonna happen.

Their relationship was adorable to watch. Neither really cared too much in the beginning, only wanting to get the five dates over with. Get what they needed. They even made rules.

    Rules schmules.

Little did they know, their connection was strong, the chemistry present and sizzling. They both fought hard against it.

Watching these two act like they didn’t want each other was fun, watching them fake their nonchalantness was entertaining. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough.

This was my first read from the author (shame on me!) and I can’t wait to read more. Reading this one definitely makes me want to go and read The Hartigans Series, and it most definitely makes me want to read the next book, Awk-Weird!

A sweet contemporary romance, the characters keep you reading. Hockey plays little part in the story and there's no great plot events or surprises, but there's no need for the happy book escapism.

Three stars for a good contemporary romance.

The premises of story well familiar. H&h joints online dating , arranged - to save H image as professional athlete, a little twist that this dating app involves both their parents ( which H & h came from single parents house holding )

Anyway this book make me laugh from the beginning , not to mentioned the sassy attitude from h which I have to add she is very independent, know what she want and have a backbone

NO DRAMA - see this is very important, since it’s only suit when you find Drama on your mascara volume

I do hope h father’s could have lots of endorsements of how giddy he compliments everyone

Great Epilogue - it’s like a dessert for me , so pretty important

Reviewed in Germany on June 4, 2020

I fell in love with these characters. Parental Guidance is one of those books that will have you laughing out loud, sexy banter and have you rooting for these two. Avery Flynn never disappoints!! I always feel so happy and smiling after reading one of her books. These stories that she creates, really just hit you in the heart. I couldn’t stop reading once I started. Seriously, I stayed up way past my bedtime to get to the end. Caleb is just funny, sexy and swoony, it’s that simple and Zara well, she was the perfect person for him. Their witty banter, their sarcasm and the passion you felt between them was just jumping off the pages. This will go down as one of my top favourite from Avery Flynn and as well as my best reads for 2019!! Overall, five boundless stars!! Was an absolute pleasure to escape into this book. Just happy reading everyone!!
