From Partition to Solidarity: The first 100 years of Polish football Paperback – July 18, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
The book is split into six acts, each covering a different era of the country's recent history:
• "A Partitioned Poland" details the early years of Polish football, in a 'country' battling for independence from its three partitioning rulers.
• "A Reunified Poland" recounts the creation of league and cup competitions, and the early years of the national team, against the backdrop of a country struggling to both establish and identify itself in a vastly changed Europe.
• "An Occupied Poland" tells of how Poles, decimated and displaced due to the bloodiest conflict in human history, used football to keep spirits high - often despite the risks in doing so.
• "An Oppressed Poland" focuses on Poland being dragged under the wing of the Soviet Union, and the country's successes on an international stage at a time when oppression was rife back at home.
• "A Rebellious Poland concentrates particularly on the 1980s, and the role that football played in the fight to bring down communism.
• "A Free Poland" touches on Poland's transformation into a western-style democracy, and dealing with the problems which for years had been hidden by communist cover-ups.
Starting from its humble beginnings in Austrian-partitioned Poland, and ending a century later in a post-communist world, it is difficult to ignore the impact that 123 years of partition, two world wars and over 40 years of Soviet puppetry has had on a rapidly developing Polish game.
Through the stories of Ernest Wilimowski, Kazimierz Deyna, Zbigniew Boniek and many more, From Partition... tells the astonishing history of Polish football like no other book has done before.

5.0 out of 5 stars The tangled tale of Polish football
It is symbolic of the tangled history of Polish football that the first recorded game (and the first goal) took place in a city which isn't even part of present day Poland and viewed from a different angle is also the first Ukrainian game. Ryan Hubbard's study- a labour of love for a football culture with which he clearly deeply identifies- starts back when "Polish" clubs had to be founded in three different multi-national empires with very different approaches to Polish football. Austrian Galicia was relaxed (there was even an explicitly nationalist Polish football federation based thereat one point), the Russian Empire obstructive and hostile while Polish sides in Imperial Germany slotted into a more complex landscape of ethnically defined and works based teams. He takes the story through the resurrection of Poland after the First World War, the horrors of German (and Soviet) occupation 1939-44, into the hard and repressive days of Communist Poland, effectively ending with the collapse of Communism (developments after about 1990 are handled rather sketchily).
For readers of a certain age, it is fascinating to have a quasi-inside view of the roots of the great Polish teams of the 1970's and early 1980's. For those interested in social history, the ups and downs of the game offer intriguing sidelights on the development of Polish society, from allegations of refereeing bias against teams perceived as"German" during the inter-war years to the rise and fall of sides linked to the Silesian mining industry during the Communist years. In some areas one would have liked to know more. How, for instance, did clubs sustain themselves when a national league was set up in the 1930's, especially since the game was still supposed to be amateur (one suspects the origins of Communist-era workplace based shamateurism may have predated the formal linking of clubs to state enterprises then)? There were clearly club which were perceived as "German" in the inter-war league; given the strength of sides from Lwow/Lviv in that period, were there "Ukrainian" ones too and did they have similar gripes about the referees? How did transfers work in Communist Poland? Hubbard also skates rather lightly over the match fixing scandals which nearly cost Poland its chance to co-host the 2012 European championships and the hooliganism which has become an engrained problem. Nevertheless overall a very informative and revealing window into a unique football culture.

4.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful find on an interesting topic
As a history buff, football fan and now part of an extended Polish family, this book filled a real niche for me.
This book takes a snapshot at how football itself evolved in a country which was at the centre of every major development in the 20th century, and connects them seamlessly.
The journeys and famous victories of the białe orly and the way club football in Poland interacted with the many varied power structures us truly fascinating - if anything, I would have liked more of that- what were the politics of the different fan bases and how did their respective industries shape their culture?
I would say the final thoughts perhaps could be more profound, but that's more of a nitpick. I'm excited to see where Polish football goes and what Ryan Hubbard writes in the future.
A book truly written with love and rigour.
