The Patient Man: Jackman & Evans, Book 6 Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

4.5 out of 5 stars 12,294 ratings

From number one best-selling author Joy Ellis, a totally absorbing mystery full of stunning twists and turns.

A mystery which will captivate you till the dramatic ending.

Jackman and Evans’ most dangerous enemy is back to finish things off.

The domestic bliss of Detective Inspector Rowan Jackman, of Fenland Constabulary, doesn’t last long. His old nemesis, serial killer Alistair Ashcroft, is back in town and ready to tidy up unfinished business.

Ashcroft sends a sinister text to DS Marie Evans. His opening move in what will prove to be a lethal game of cat-and-mouse. Yet for all his taunts, where is he? In a county crawling with police on the lookout for him, Ashcroft is nowhere to be found.

Everyone Jackman cares about is in danger. Alongside the hunt for Ashcroft, however, normal police work must continue. The separate thefts of six pigs, a thoroughbred stallion, guns and some oil lead Jackman’s crew to the notorious Lorimer family, ruled over on their farm by the fearsome matriarch Rachel.

Meanwhile, a seemingly routine break-in at the home of gun-club owner Kenneth Harcourt quickly becomes more complicated when the man long held responsible for having killed Harcourt’s young daughter in a hit-and-run is shot dead in a car park - by a sniper. A killer is on the loose in the quiet streets of Saltern-le-Fen, and he isn’t going to stop at claiming one life. But why is he focusing on young Kevin, so close to promotion to detective?

And the sniper, like Ashcroft, takes to taunting the police: they’ll never catch him, they need to respect him, they shouldn’t be sidetracked looking for their old adversary.

In a stunning conclusion, Jackman and Evans race against time to catch the sniper and track down their deadly adversary. A lethal game with a very patient man. Full of twists and turns, this is a crime thriller that will keep you listening until the shocking ending. Set in the atmospheric Lincolnshire Fens whose towns and isolated villages hide many dark secrets.

Featuring one of the most cunning and dastardly villains, this sixth in the Jackman and Evans series continues and finishes (I hope) the career of Alistair Ashcroft. Wonderful side stories and characters and a bit of a happy ending amidst the carnage, the body count and hunt that wends its way all over the Lincolnshire fenland. This is a wonderful saga of evil personified with some in depth abnormal psychology. Beautifully and seamlessly written. A winner!!!

This mystery is a complex network of apparently unrelated crimes that are all masterminded by one man. He’s had a go at them already in a previous book, injuring the Sargent and himself, but now he wants revenge and he’s upping the ante (in a way) by arming himself with firearms (he was actually scarier when he tortured victims in a previous installment).
While I like the Nikki Galena novels from the same author slightly better because she’s a more flamboyant character, DI jackman and his DS are also a well coordinated team.
We also get another view of the Lincolnshire Fens (Jackman and Co. work in another small town near galena’s base, in fact, they call on her to help them because the bad guy is so good at what he does). Likewise we learn what happens in the UK when the bad guys start shooting. The police are not normally issued firearms so there has to be a special unit for that. Not every police station has one, they are sort of like a US SWAT team. They are called out in this book but most of the shooting is done outside official sources. Anyway, a good read with some fine local color.

Joy ELLIS' thriller is a wonderfully written thriller that will keep your pages flying by, loaded with twists that you won't believe, and turns that will make your head spin! You get to know the same characters better but new ones are introduced also that round out the whole cresendo leading up to the finale! Alistar Ashcroft has so many aliases and disguises this time around, it's amazing! He's hard to keep track of! It looks like he is never ever going to get captured! He's so slick! Slicker than an eel! You've gotta read this one! Its to DIE FOR!

I'm a huge fan of Joy Ellis' works - starting off with DI Nikki Galena series (which I love most), then DI Jackman, and DCI Matt Ballard. Ellis' works have always been flawless for me - being able to avoid loopholes, answer all the mysteries, and maintain the excitement throughout the story. I also love the characters.

    ***Possible SPOILERS***
The main reason for the 3.5 star is that there's really nothing wrong with the story - meaning the flawless elements are still intact. BUT. And this is a big but. I was totally disappointed by the rundown of Jackmen's nemesis, Alistair Ashcroft. I mean, the author practically revolves 2 books (this one and its previous) around the man - building up the tension and creating a very terrorized state everyone was forced to be in because of Ashcroft - just to end in a kinda slapstick anticlimax. Shots in the kneecap by outsiders (points taken in the irony of the people he took for granted is the ones who can cause highest damage to him - but still)!!! Everything went limp and wane after that...

Another petty reason that is quite personal for me is I don't buy the chemistry between Jackman and his 'darling-loving-lovely' Laura. I think the relationship is totally lacking that it made me dislike Laura despite the fact that I was totally okay with her when she first appeared in DI Galena series. For me, there is no bonding, no stories of why the two are in love. Everything seems forced to the point that it made Jackman very stiffed and hard to like in this book. Gone was the gentle soul. This might sound petty, but it has become one of the major turn-offs for me.

I delighted in this story. Glad to see the villain was finally apprehended!!! And in such an inclusive finale. Having a family with intellectual disabilities so involved in the conclusion was genius. Very much appreciated. And heart warming "asides" balanced out the "thriller" aspects of this book. Congrats Joy Ellis on a well written book. 👏

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Jackman & Evans ever!

Jackman and Evan’s archenemy, the psychopath Alistair Ashcroft, comes back for his revenge, as he had promised. Being a Patient Man (the title eponym), he devised a very intricate plan. The plot unravels in a thrilling crescendo as Ashcroft strikes innocent people with the sole intent to torment Rowan and Marie, and with them, their team too, in particular a young copper just promoted to detective. Despite the tense climate, the author cleverly finds the way to develop personal and family relationships of several characters, perfectly combining daily life and police investigation and giving depth to the story, which therefore isn’t just a procedural drama as it deepens into the human aspect. The final scene – maybe just a little too short after all the building – offers a last surprise with the intervention of unforeseen allies who help to solve the situation in a quite unexpected way. And Marie is priceless when she takes her revenge on Ashcroft for her beloved Hayabusa!
The other famous Fen-based detective Nikki Galena is mentioned several times, so my hope to see a crossover between these two series flies high! Well, a girl can always dream, right??
So far, this is my favourite novel in the Jackman & Evans series, and I’m already looking forward to their next investigation!
