Pay It Forward Kindle Edition

4.1 out of 5 stars 156 ratings

Troubled pasts, fresh starts, new love.

Forced to leave home as soon as he finished high school, Bailey McCreedy’s focus has been on earning enough money to survive. All he needs is a roof over his head and to keep his small mobile lending library running. Books are Bailey’s escape, and he loves to share the joy of reading with those who don’t have access to them.

Tom Brooks’s upbringing is very different to Bailey’s, with a loving family, a good education, and a high-flying job—that is, until things came crashing down. Tom opens a coffee shop, struggling to build his business and reluctant to accept help, operating under the misguided belief that he must pay penance for his sins. Watching Bailey work with the street kids opens Tom’s eyes to the reality that accepting help is not a sign of weakness, and that he is so much more than his past mistakes.

But as Bailey falls for Tom, with his charming manner, obvious care for others, and group of successful friends, Bailey’s own sense of self-worth threatens to tear them apart. In the face of intensifying challenges, he’s reluctant to confide in Tom, afraid he’s not good enough.

A bright future will require Bailey to heed his own advice—people aren’t defined by their failures or inability to live up to the expectations of others. It’s time for Tom to pay it forward, and Bailey needs to accept the help and love that Tom offers.

Pay It Forward is a hurt/comfort romance featuring found family and fresh starts.

Nic Starr opens the Giving Back series with Bailey, who hates his job, and Tom, a cafe owner with a chip. These MCs are surrounded by a diverse cast of interesting people over winter in Sydney. Stressed, tired and worried, seemingly unsurmountable challenges face the pair, who, with fortitude and perseverance, face them head on.

Anyone who thinks they can get along in life alone is mistaken. You might exist...but you won't live to the fullest!

These young men have been tough blows throughout their lives...and sometimes they come back to back and repeatedly. Luckily they have friends who step up and won't take 'no' for an answer. And then they find each other and life just gets sweeter.

The best thing about this book is that Nic reveals how each character ultimately relies heavily on his own strengths and keeps moving onward and upward. Often against great odds!

I liked the story idea, this was actually a lovely story about helping hands. Between lovers, and friends.
I liked the chemistry between the two main characters, but I didn't get enough time to enjoy their relationship. The friendship was great, the angst was a right portion.
This is sweet, enjoyable friends to lovers story. Not my favorite, but still okay.

Bailey works part time in a call center. He hates it, but it pays the bills, barely, and since he was forced to leave home after finishing high school, he’s hard-pressed to find anything better. In his spare time, Bailey also collects donated books for distribution to kids on the street. Tom is the owner and chief barista of Take Two, a coffee shop that’s his own second chance after a disastrous career in finance. This time he’s determined to make it on his own without risking dragging down anyone else if he fails. Both men are about to learn that we all need help sometimes.

“Pay It Forward” is a rather charming little romance featuring two very realistically drawn protagonists. Tom and Bailey are very believable characters, and the dramatic turns the story takes are quite relatable facets of everyday life as opposed to artificial. Both men are rather like-able characters, if far from perfect.

There are a number of secondary characters surrounding the two main protagonists, and many of them are quite well drawn. In particular, the street kids that Bailey works with are painted with special care to make them quite real. One suspects the author may have been trying to make a point, but if so, it’s done very softly.

If there is one nit I would pick with the story, it’s how everything turns out. While most of us may like our happy endings, things get wrapped up a little too neatly for everyone at the end of this story. It’s a little too much of a good thing, with everything working out for everyone.

They not only helped each other but helped those around them. I really enjoyed this book. It brought forward problems that are felt all over the world and just with the help of one man three others were able to start having a better life.

I liked the story and the moderately slow build of the romance. I did not care for some of the sex scenes but I guess they were there because that’s what some readers want.

Sat down to read to take my mind off what was happening in my world & this book certainly did that. I couldn’t put the book down. The characters were all believable & you wanted to know what was going to happen next in their lives. I really enjoyed reading the book & will certainly be reading more by the author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bailey and Tom to guys in a life who need someone

So this is about these two normal guys who have had a life hit them hard. They meet at Toms coffee shop and things go from there. Bailey is the prod that Tom need to move forward from a past issue that he has taken on board.
Bailey has his own problems swimming in life’s lanes and then getting dunked when work and life decide to hit him hard.
This books tells the daily life story we all have and how two men get through it and love each other more each day.
    Fab read loved it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read
Reviewed in Australia on March 2, 2019
This was an enjoyable read. The connection between Tom and Bailey is a slow burn at first but quickly catches fire - no only do they have a physical attraction to each other, but they also have a great friendship and level of comfort with each other from the outset. Both have had their hardships and are facing forward and working to a better future for themselves. It took Bailey a little longer to find his place and build his self-confidence but he got their in the end with the help of his friend Ryan, Tom, and also Tom's friends.

It was a light read in that there isn't a lot of background development or interaction with their families, and no angst. The story was mostly just about Tom and Bailey'sday to day lives and interactions, which were remarkably normal. Despite Tom not being on the outs with his family, they never enter into the story aside from a casual mention. Bailey has his weekly phone calls with his mother so we do see a bit more of his family than Tom's. Other secondary characters make an appearance, but again not in a lot of detail and we really only get to know the bare minimum about them.

    A sweet and fun read.
