Pearl: Prairie Roses Collection - Book 16 Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 82 ratings

Man goes to mountaintops to pray. Woman, caring for hearth and home, stays too busy to climb, so God comes to her.

Because Pearl has no acceptable marriage prospects, when her father decides to sell out and join her brothers in Oregon Territory, she must go, too. Her father’s assurance that he plans to travel the safer Applegate Trail to reach the Willamette Valley brings little comfort. Her discontent increases when, not far from South Pass, a middle-aged widower and self-subscribed preacher with four children—whose wife recently drowned during a river crossing—walks down from a nearby mountain and informs Pearl that God decreed she is to marry him.

Pearl has no desire to marry the sanctimonious and overbearing widower. She reads her Holy Bible. She prays. She diligently strives to honor her father and bear her burdens with patience, but enough is enough. If God wants to tell someone whom she should marry, He can tell her. She has no time to climb mountains. Will God answer the prayers she offers as she performs the tasks of everyday life?

Michael Stanwyck has no room in his life for marriage and family. After the death of his father, Michael takes his portion of the inheritance and buys enough dry goods to fill three freight wagons he’ll accompany to the gold fields of California. Along the trail, the freight train he travels with encounters pioneer wagon trains, especially when bad weather and swollen rivers result in “bunching up.” He comes across one dark-haired beauty he cannot forget. Then he finds her on the trail several days past Fort Hall with her prairie schooner and a lame ox. Can he, in good conscience, continue to California and leave Pearl alone to return to Fort Hall where only an uncertain future awaits?

    From Ohio to Oregon 1858

"I don't want to go." Those were Pearl's thoughts as she and her father prepared to make the journey to Oregon, to be near her two brothers who had moved there. All she wanted was to stay in Ohio, but as a lone woman, she had no choice. But then she heard the voice " Go, I will prepare a way.".

At the same time, Michael Stanwyck is leaving for California with three wagons full of goods he will sell once he gets to the gold fields. He isn't looking for a wife, but sometimes God has other plans!

A story of endurance, trying to trust what God has in store and finding much more than you ever thought. As always Zina brings her stories alive by with her historical knowledge and well developed characters that always leave me with a smile and a hugh sigh at the end!

This is a great book by author Zina Abbott. She always puts so much research into her books and it shows. At times, I felt like I was right there on the trail with them. I loved how Pearl honored and took care of her father on the trail and never let her faith waver. If anything it became stronger, even though she had so much to deal with. She was a strong woman, that stood up for what she believed in, but was still a very caring person. I also liked Michael and his two helpers and how he stood by her. As a added bonus to the book, Zina has included part of her research, which is very interesting. If you like historical western romance, I highly recommend this book. I don't think you will be disappointed.

This was a very good story, that kept my attention until the end. Then it just ended, it felt unfinished. There wasn't an epilogue to finish the story of where they settled or if Pearl was reunited with her brothers.

I really liked how strong the main characters, Pearl, was! It made the story much more interesting & gave me a window into her thoughts about how women were generally treated those days. This book is a clean Christian romance.

Adventures on a wagon train as dealt with by an independent young woman who struggles to make her own way not forced by men folk and the rules they make. She succeeds in prayer and daily struggles. Good read.
