Peas, Carrots and an Aston Martin: Sharp, funny, and deeply human - a truly uplifting British comedy (The Peas and Carrots Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
The good news: Eric's inherited his father's pristine Aston Martin DB4. The bad news? Everything else.
When Eric Sibley inherits his father's beloved Aston Martin DB4, he discovers there's an outrageous catch - he must tend to his father's allotment. Every week. For two years. For a London executive whose idea of gardening is buying pre-cut salad from Waitrose, this is nothing short of absurd.
Between cantankerous allotment holders, a catastrophic incident with a mini-excavator, and suspicious herbs that may or may not be illegal, Eric's life is careening towards chaos. His marriage is teetering on the brink, his career is hanging by a thread, and the allotment committee seems determined to make his life as difficult as possible.
Could there be more to this inheritance than just an aging car and an overgrown allotment, or is Eric's father playing one final trick from beyond the grave?
Perfect for fans of witty British fiction and anyone who knows that sometimes the best things in life start with a little chaos.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2018I loved this from beginning to end! I laughed out loud all of the way through it. I won't give anything away except I think the author is now one of my favorites! Love her writing style. Love the characters. Love the story. I couldn't put it down. This is part one of three. As soon as I was finished with this one, I had to find the next one immediately to continue the adventure. Finished that one in two sittings with the same satisfaction I had with the first - except the ending shocked me. I didn't see it coming. That said, part three will be out in January 2019 and I will be waiting impatiently for it to be out. Highly recommend!!!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2020I often do not leave a review for books I didn't enjoy ("If you can't say something nice..." was drummed into me during childhood) and i reserve 5-star reviews for those very few Pulitzer-level discoveries, so my very solid four stars here constitutes a ringing endorsement. I relished the many evocative turns-of-phrase with which the author depicted these charming characters and their surroundings ("...a scent of sodden autumn and manure pervaded his lungs" and the fact that we do not know whether the alarming feeling bubbling up inside a character's gut is an incipient heart attack, or a fit of irrepressible hilarity. When I downloaded this volume, I did not remember that I had previously downloaded the entire boxed set. Lucky me! Am definitely looking forward to the next one. One cautionary note...if for some reason you are reading or have read the stand-alone short story about "The Mole Incident", do not be put off by the lax copy editing on that (at least in the kindle version) I found the proofing in Aston Martin volume impeccable, so kudos to the author and editor for meeting that high bar so successfully. (And, as an aside to the author if you are reading this review: thanks so much for the timely reminder that i need to pay more attention to the care and cleaning of my own "Sally" :-)
- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2018My star rating for this book is 3.5
An intriguing concept of the very human condition of a man’s pursuit for luxury and status through possessions to the point of allowing his life – and that of his family – to be controlled from beyond the grave in order to attain them.
This is a light-hearted read consisting of a series of vignettes in the main character’s workplace, home and an acquired allotment where he interplays with a disparate group of characters that promise more humour and situations than the book actually delivers. For me there was something missing and I do believe this would work better as a screenplay than a novel, thus allowing the actors to fill out the characters whom I found underdeveloped – quite a shame as I was sad for the author since she has created a work with a huge potential, that just fell short for me.
There is an abundance of humour in the story that is mostly delivered in narrative metaphors and one-liners that would have greater effect coming from the characters out of their dialogue and situations.
The cover is eye catching and appealing and the star of the show is a DB4 Aston Martin.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 21, 2019I was expecting a cozy story with slightly sloppy editing and an ultimately predictable story that would fill the minutes between turning of the light at night and passing out. What I discovered is a delightful, quirky story with a cast of characters that are all too human in their frailties and, for that reason, wholly engaging. Eric, the hero, embodies so many of the hopes, fears, and ambitions that many westerners have embedded in them by the culture and by parents who were themselves stumbling through life. His wife is longsuffering and supportive while Eric wrestles with his insecurities and tries to live up to his multitude of obligations. So many of the characters' struggles and joys struck chords with me - my tummy clenching with tension, shoulders relaxing with happiness in unison with their challenges. The writing is sure and delightful - far from what my grumpy self anticipated. A real pleasure to read ... so much so that I immediately bought the second book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2019I adored this story which I listened to as an audiobook. The main character, Eric, is self-obsessed with career and while he loves his family, they sometimes take the back seat to his drive to succeed, provide, and make money in the busy world. This all comes crashing down around him when he receives an inheritance after the death of his father. The inheritance is a classic Aston Martin with the stipulation he must spend time each week at the garden allotment in a community garden or he loses the car. This brings up a lot of feelings in Eric with regards to the relationship between he and his father and the impact on "his" life. The story explores his feelings and his relationships (old and new) as he tries to meet the demands of the inheritance. The narrator did a wonderful job with distinguishing character voices and their personalities and the pacing was good. While the book can be read as a stand-a-lone, there is lead-in for next book in the series, I look forward to reading or listening to other books in the series as the characters grew on me and I am curious to where things go next. I received a free copy of this audiobook at my own request and have left this review voluntarily.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 17, 2023Loved it! Read it the few days I was off work for my father-in-law's funeral. It really struck a chord with me, especially as I was processing my grief. Loved the gardening angle, it is really something I'm passionate about.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 18, 2023This book is the first in a new series. The story is set in England. A young man has recently lost his estranged father. He inherits a classic car, with conditions. This is a humorous story as well as the story of family and well-being. It starts off a bit slow, but I was loving it by the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Peas, carrots and a host of hilarious mishaps
Having read Hannah's other books, I was initially unsure about the change in genre; saying that, I enjoyed sharing Eric's journey immensely. The cast of characters who accompany him on the way are described in such vivid detail that at times I felt I knew them as well as I know my own friends.
You almost feel the book has run its course and a neat ending will be presented, when it becomes apparent that not yet all is revealed. I'm impatient for the feather boa follow-up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Who knew gardening could be so entertaining?
“You may not see it now, but what I have left you is worth more than money, more than the house.”
Eric Sibley has it all; a great job, a big house and a beautiful wife and daughter. When his estranged father passes away, Eric is aghast to learn that instead of the house, paintings and his mother’s jewellery, his father has bequeathed him an overgrown allotment and his prized 1962 limited edition Aston Martin, affectionately known as Sally, on the condition that Eric maintains the allotment on a weekly basis for the next two years or risk the ownership of his car being rescinded.
Now Eric must somehow juggle a hectic career and family life in the city, with regular visits to the small riverside town of Burlam. Life for Eric quickly turns into a chaotic kaleidoscope of grumpy pensioners, muddy Wellington boots, gardening mishaps, drug raids and missed deadlines, which leave his marriage, job and sanity hanging in the balance. Will Eric come to understand his father’s message from beyond the grave before he risks losing all three?
Peas, Carrots and an Aston Martin is the first quintessential British novel in what looks to be a promising series. It was also my first introduction to the author. Told with wit and charm, the story centres around a man’s journey of self reflection and realisation following the death of his father after he’s bequeathed an inheritance with an unusual stipulation. While attempting to fulfill the requirements of the will, he comes to appreciate the important things in life.
Eric’s journey and awakening as well as the relationships he forges throughout the book are a revelation. When we first meet Eric, it quickly becomes apparent after he scoffs at his father’s last letter to him before he died, that Eric needs to re-evaluate his priorities. As time goes on however, he changes and although we don’t see him acknowledge this, we as readers know that his father could not have left him a greater gift.
The secondary characters were quirky, charming and endearing. One of my favourites was the irascible, cantankerous Norman, an old friend of his father’s, who initially gives Eric a hard time when he first arrives at the allotment. The two eventually reach an understanding which makes the ending all the more poignant and bittersweet.
The interactions between Eric and and the young man who works at the DIY store were particularly hilarious as Eric’s attempts to take shortcuts end in one disaster after another, causing him to lose the deposits on the heavy gardening equipment he hires.
All in all this was a lighthearted, charming read that will leave readers chuckling and crying tears of joy as well as sorrow. Warm witty dialogue and colourful distinctive characters will stay with you long after the last page. I can’t wait to see what the author has in store for Eric and his family in the sequel.
