The Case of the Peculiar Pantomime (Caster & Fleet Mysteries) Kindle Edition

4.3 out of 5 stars 48 ratings

Now you see it, now you don’t!

When Katherine and Connie, proprietors of the Caster & Fleet Detective Agency, hear from an old music-hall acquaintance just before Christmas, they expect nothing more than a good night out. However, the eerie noises and mysterious figures at the Merrymakers Music Hall are causing consternation among audience and actors alike.

Meanwhile, Katherine and Connie have their own domestic mysteries to solve. Why is Katherine’s father leaving his belongings all over London? And why has Connie’s daughter gone silent? Add the difficulties of present-buying, and the detective duo are distinctly ruffled.

Can Katherine and Connie solve the mystery and calm all the restless spirits – including their own – before the curtain falls and Christmas is ruined?

The Case of the Peculiar Pantomime is a Christmas novelette in the world of the Caster & Fleet mystery series, set in 1890s London.

Liz Hedgecock grew up in London, England, did an English degree, and then took forever to start writing. After several years working in the National Health Service, some short stories crept into the world. A few even won prizes. Then the stories started to grow longer...

Now Liz travels between the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries, murdering people. To be fair, she does usually clean up after herself.

Liz’s reimaginings of Sherlock Holmes, her Pippa Parker cozy mystery series, and the Caster & Fleet Victorian mystery series (with Paula Harmon) are available in ebook and paperback.

Liz lives in Cheshire with her husband and two sons, and when she’s not writing or child-wrangling you can usually find her reading, messing about on Twitter, or cooing over stuff in museums and art galleries. That's her story, anyway, and she's sticking to it.

First time to read this series Will be added to my TBR list. Connie and Katherine are partners in Caster and Fleet Detective Agency . They are asked by Selina a player in the MerryMakers troupe to investigate mysterious and ghostly activities. These only happen during play performances .There is a comedic scene when all is revealed
Even though I had not met these characters before it eas guit easy to follow the story line

This kindle e-book novella is from Amazon

Katherine and Connie are part of the Detective Agency Caster & Fleet. They are asked to look into strange events at a play. They fall into the truth and with an adjustment save the play.

I would recommend this prequel to readers of British mystery novels. 2024

Katherine and Connie run the Castor & Fleet Detective Agency in 1890s London. Multiple mysteries are happening around them so need to get moving on this case. Family - a dad and a daughter - are driving them nuts, but a nice surprise awaits. Merrymakers Music Hall troupe are having an issue with noises and commotion during their performances. Possible ghost? They get involved with the troupe and even make it on stage to get a better handle on what is going on. A very quick, unique little mystery that was a lot of fun and had wonderful banter between all the characters.

Selena, a friend of Connie and Katherine, comes to the office of Caster and Fleet Detectives with a story about strange happenings at the theater where she and her usual cast were putting on a play about Cinderella. It's the Christmas season and she is worried that someone might be hurt by the strange happenings. While attending a performance that evening they see and hear the strange disturbances. They talk with Mr. T, who runs the plays, but he denies any knowledge of what is happening. After several performances, all with strange happenings, they decide to appear on the stage in costume to try and catch the culprit. It's a fun read as well as enjoyable. Good short story.

I received this book free from the authors for my review of same.

This is the first Caster & Fleet story I’ve read, and it will not be my last. I am adding the series to my To Be Read list. I am curious to know how the partnership between Katherine and Connie began. This story is an entertaining and clean whodunit set in the late nineteenth century London. The detective duo of Katherine and Connie are very likeable and amusing pair of characters. The short story was easily read in one sitting. It’s a book that I feel comfortable recommending for readers of any age.

I received a free copy of this book from the author via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. This gift did not affect my review of the book. This review is my voluntary and honest opinion.

Been awhile since I dove into a Castor & Fleet Detective Agency mystery. This one is a nice bite-sized read for the holidays. Back to the Merrymakers Music Hall to help Selina, an acquaintance from their first foray into the music hall. Strange noises are permeating the Christmas pantomime. Is someone trying to get the music hall closed down? Or is the audience enthralled by the possible haunting? Katherine & Connie don their actor personas to investigate. Meanwhile, Katherine’s father is acting strangely, even for him plus Connie’s daughter won’t speak to anyone regardless of possibly being on the naughty list. What is going on with this holiday season?

Friends Katherine and Connie are female friends and private detectives. When ghostly happenings happen at the music hall the friends are on the case. Not having read any of the author’s previous book there were a few confusing moments in the book. But overall it was an interesting Christmas book. I’ll probably read the past books of this author just to catch up.

A quickie from the Caster and Fleet series. It helps if you are familiar with the Victorian detectives and the cast of characters which make up their world.

In this story they go back to the Merrymakers Music Hall to solve a mystery of ghostly goings on, while trying to find the time to do their Christmas shopping and keep their families happy.

Recommended as a pick me up for those winter afternoons.
