Perfectly Adequate Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 2,100 ratings

Fans of The Kiss Quotient will love Perfectly Adequate, a heartfelt and hilarious journey along the “human” spectrum from USA Today & Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author Jewel E. Ann.

Dorothy Mayhem is a nursing student, patient transporter, reckless driver, and emu owner. She knows she isn’t like other girls. Neurotypical people are nothing if not predictable, though, and that’s why she has made a hobby of studying their behavior through books and TV.

It helps her fit in with her peers when she can emulate them.

But nothing can prepare her for Dr. Elijah Hawkins.

He’s a single dad. A brilliant pediatric oncologist. Widely agreed to be the sexiest doctor at the hospital. And entirely unpredictable.

Though getting to know the man behind the chiseled features and top-notch reputation would be her pleasure, Dorothy misunderstands one attempt after another to ask her out. Instead of dates with Elijah, she finds herself on a series of playdates with his son.

Roman is cute, sweet, and brings her unexpectedly closer to his father every day.

Dorothy Mayhem is about to find out that the only thing more unpredictable than a child—is love.

i absolutely loved this book
"The spectrum is human. It's not autism.""I don't mind being me. No one else can do it better."- Dorothy MayhemThis book! Wow! ❤️❤️For a Jewel book to move to pretty much the top spot (second spot cause nothing will ever surpass When Life Happened for me) says that this book was phenomenal. Which it one hundred percent was.Absolute perfection. The neurodiverse character Dorothy was stunning, like I cannot even describe. She did this character to complete and utter superbness!! One million times over my absolute favorite female character from a book now. I seriously cannot say enough how well this character was done. Gold! Pure gold. This storyline was oh so wonderful. Eli was absolutely amazing. Everything he goes through and is still such a down right good person. Made me melt. 🥰I am still letting this book settle in with me. I devoured it yesterday and I know it's one that will stay with me for a very long time. Just speechless. So f***ing good. And I don't say that lightly.

This book was such a breath of fresh air! This book was also an amazing preview on what my perfectly imperfect amazing eight year old son could be like in twenty-two years. Dorothy Mayhem in her matter-of-fact inability to lie and all around neurotic behavior was the most awesome heroine I’ve read in a long time!

“I don’t mind being me. No one else can do it better.”–Dorothy Mayhem

From an outsider's perspective Eli has the perfect life. Gorgeous, successful pediatric oncologist, adorable three year old son, fantastic family. He has everything right? Except... That whole, his wife up and divorced him a year ago for no reason and he’s having a real b*tch of a time getting over it. He has spent almost every moment since she walked out the door dreaming of a reunion that would allow his family to once again be whole. As if it wasn’t horrible enough to have been put through all this, he has to see this woman at work ALL.THE.TIME!! She is a renowned pediatric plastic surgeon.

Enter Dorothy. Dr Elijah Hawkins first meets the beautiful patient transporter and nursing student. She’s on the spectrum, so she’s wonderfully a little socially awkward at times.

“It doesn’t require in-depth conversation, which is good since conversation is not my best honed skill.”

She is also one of the kindest most caring people/characters ever written! She was unapologetically honest. It doesn’t matter if it’s an inappropriate time or venue, she does what most ASD people do and that’s just speak freely and say the first thing that comes to their minds. #WithoutFilter
There were so many quirky things about Dorothy to love. Her approach to dating, her fashion sense, her sweet bond with Roman. GAH! I literally loved everything! She is the most unselfishly loving person ever. I loved Dorothy and Eli together. In a world of imperfections they were absolute perfection. Told in dual POV this quick read is the perfect rom-com. It’s the sweetest love story.

This book gives me so many feelings. I loved it because it was sweet, and quirky and hilarious! As a momma of a precious eight year old on the spectrum, this book gives me joy, and hope and the giggles too! Dorothy in this book reminds me of my little Mikey and his “sweet savagery” in telling you exactly what he thinks about something as simple as how your food tastes or how the other player is doing in a video game. We need people like My Mikey and Dorothy’s in our world. They bring color to it, make us view it differently, if we just take a moment and look at it through their eyes, I think the whole world would start to change for the better. I don’t know what amazing thing I did to be hand picked to be his momma, but I’m forever grateful. God knew I needed that boy, probably way more than he will ever need me. Everyday with fail he puts a smile on my face and it’s usually because of some “truthgrenade” he’s pulled the pin and dropped at someone’s feet. Just like Dorothy’s character! Lol

I loved Eli and Dorothy’s story the MOST. I instantly loved everything about Dorothy Mayhem from her inappropriate sex moments, and disasters, the fondue OMG the fondue. DYING! Don’t miss out on this amazingly sweet new rom-com by Jewel E. Ann with its unconventional heroine and fantastic accuracy in giving better understanding of the amazing people with ASD.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️- I cannot possibly convey how much I truly love this book. It’s wonderful and sweet and hilarious! You just HAVE TO read this book!
🔥🔥🔥- The chemistry between Dorothy and Eli was crazy hot. They had some hilarious scenes because it’s Dorothy and something crazy always happens around Dorothy. Lol
🌪Cliffhanger Warning- No cliffhanger! So, Jewel might make you sweat for a few, but… This ending is #Perfection

Wow. I'm a little speechless. Let me gather my words. Okay. I think I got them.

Dr Elijah "Eli" Hawkins is a good man. He's hot, intelligent, and loves with his whole being. He may just be a little too perfect. Trying to always do the right thing can bring on a lot of confusion, frustration, and hurt feelings but he finally worked out what he needed. Dorothy (awful name) was a riot. Being inside her head was even fun at times. Trying to understand her can be a challenge but Dr Hawkins saw past and accepted those challenges.

Dorothy's parents were awesome. Eli's mom was wonderful and helped our Eli through some rough times. Eli's dad was in the book briefly but we didn't really get to see him much. Then there is Dr. Julie "Jules" Hathaway, Eli's ex-wife and a real pain. Eli deserved so much better. I was not a fan of hers. I know there wouldn't really have been a story without her but I don't have to like her. 😁

The plot was well thought out and realistic enough to suck you into the story. Eli and Dorothy had chemistry and they just fit each other. I can honestly say that I have never read a romance book like this one. I found myself ugly crying. After all that fun I had reading about Eli and Dorothy falling in love I was plunged into some really deep emotional stuff. It was quite a ride and I'd do it again. Yes, I highly recommend this book.

I thought long on this. I can't quite give it five stars. There were a couple things that I didn't care for towards the end and I especially didn't like the very end. It was just a little too perfect. So, I am giving this one four and a half big shiney stars.

... save a life. She is my breath of life.”

Dorthy: “I smile, my go-to when things get really awkward— which happens way too often.”

Oh my heart! It’s completely and forever head over heels in love with this heroine! She owns me heart and soul. The adorably precious, one-of-a-kind Dorothy had me laughing like a loon throughout, with a big, goofy grin on my face and unicorn sparkles filling my heart. She's delightfully unexpected and everlastingly enchanting. Dorthy will keep you off kilter, because no one's brain works like hers, so expect the unexpected – a bit of mental whiplash with a deadpan delivery.

In addition to my undying adoration of Dorothy, I have a new girl crush on an author who earns herself a spot at the top of my Must Read list (and this book may have just captured the spot for my number one read of 2019). I can’t even begin to imagine the kind of mind that can create these amazingly unique characters and fill the pages with so much laughter, love and heart, but it’s brilliant! Pure genius with a side of dazzling wit! Brava, Jewel. Brava.

Dorothy Mayhem is a nursing student and works the weekends as a patient transporter at the same hospital where the gorgeous pediatric oncologist, Dr. Eli Hawkins, works. Dorthy is on the spectrum (the human spectrum, she likes to say) but as I see her, she's highly focused, blatantly honest, and lacks even a hint of a verbal filter. See? Completely charming and endearing, and more than a little entertaining.

As for Eli, I really liked him, having a ton of sympathy for his past hurts and baggage, until he turned into a fickle, lily-livered coward. Apparently he needed to learn that doing the right thing for the wrong reasons isn’t the right thing to do. And when he finally sorted himself, Dorthy, being Dorthy, didn’t make it easy on him. (That’s my girl!)

Do yourself a favor and read this one ASAP. You'll laugh till it hurts, fall irrevocably, head over heels in love, and come away with a new appreciation for a very special segment of humans who fill the world with a million unexpected blessings every day. Those who are a light in the darkness, a breath of fresh air, and if you’re very lucky, your life might be touched by the perfectly unique and priceless love they have to give.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Rom-com
Reviewed in France on April 10, 2020
I had immense pleasure in reading this book. From the beginning, I had a smile plastered on my face while I enjoyed the interactions between Eli and Dorothy. The most enjoyable was that she always said what was in her mind and never lied. Eli couldn’t find a better match after being dumped by his high school sweetheart. How could a 38 years-old single dad who never had dated manage in the world of Tinder? Only Dorothy could make him trust a woman again. It appeared so evident to me that our inability to be forthright makes relationships so complicated.

Although the book starts as a sweet, funny rom-com, I shed tears multiple times in the second half.

I started a book challenge in February, and this month I had to look for a story with a neurodiverse character. I already read the two Helen Hoang's novels and Graeme Simsion’s Rosie project. I was surprised to find so easily another romance with a character with ASD. Luckily, these writers have a great imagination, and it was the only common point in these novels. In particular, with The Rosie Project and Perfectly Inadequate, I found myself very close to the ASD characters, the way they don’t understand the “normal” people. I loved that Dorothy called neurotypical what is generally expected.

If you’re looking for a good book, try this one.
