Marshmallows and Memories (Peridale Cafe Cozy Mystery Book 25) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,504 ratings

A body has been found in a time capsule...

"Like spending time with good friends on a chilly autumn afternoon. A wonderful addition to the Peridale Cafe series."

After a busy summer apart, the cold autumn nights and the wedding of Johnny and Leah brings Julia and her old school friends back together. And with hardly any time to go, Julia is struggling to adapt her home baking skills to the autumnal spectacular Leah has dreamt up for her big day’s wedding cake. Flavor is one thing Julia can nail, but the pictures last a lifetime.

The wedding cake experiments soon get put on the backburner when the body of one of their former teachers, Felicity Campbell, is found buried in a time capsule at the school. Along with her private investigator husband, Barker, her daughter, Jessie, and her best friend and fellow bridesmaid - and teacher - Roxy, Julia finds herself in the middle of a complicated unsolved missing person’s case from 30 years ago.

What happened in 1989 to result in Felicity’s burial in a time capsule, and why did everyone think she was living peacefully in Scotland? With those she left behind still in the village, and Barker officially on the case, they have access to all of the suspects, but not everybody is telling the truth about their last meeting with Miss Campbell. With the wedding creeping closer, Julia must juggle the cake and case, but can she close the lid on the mystery before the big day?

A FUN British village cosy/cozy mystery packed with HEART, HUMOUR, FAMILY DRAMA, and plenty of TWISTS and TURNS! The 25th book in the BESTSELLING Peridale Cafe Cozy Mystery Series. Standalone but will be enjoyed more as part of the series. A cat loving and cafe-owning amateur female sleuth set in a small village setting with quirky characters. No cliffhanger, swearing, gore or graphic scenes.

I have read every book in this series, some of them more than once. Always very well written with finely drawn realistic characters, its like visiting with old friends. In this book a time capsule is unearthed on the school grounds as workmen are preparing for the installation of new bathrooms. After the capsule is accidentally dropped, skeletal remains fall out instead of the things the school children placed there 30 years ago. The remains are discovered to be those of a beloved teacher supposedly living in Scotland for all these years. The victim's ex husband hires Barker to prove his innocence as he's the prime suspect just as he was when she disappeared 30 years previously. With very little to go on, the cold case seems daunting, but Barker, Julia and their daughter Jessie who assigns herself her dads apprentice dive in. Julia has very little time for sleuthing as she's knee deep in helping plan her friends wedding and also getting the wedding cake just right.

This is an entertaining, fast paced read. No blood, guts, gore or crude language. Just a very enjoyable novel filled with twists and turns that kept me guessing until the end. I highly recommend this book and this series. You won't be disappointed!!

    Kudos Ms. Frost...🎉🎉👏👏💞

I have enjoyed this series from the start. Reading about Julia's journey has been a lot of fun.
I'm so glad Jessie made her comeback in the last book.
Two things that I feel do not benefit these books, however, are Dot's personality and Barker's directionless existence.
Dot is flat out unpleasant. She used to be at least a little helpful where the mysteries were concerned, but now she's just a nosy judgemental irritant. She adds nothing of value to the story.
Barker is essentially an unnecessary character as well. He has police and private investigator experience but never seems to be able to figure things out crime wise.
He and Julia aren't even partners during investigations; she does all the leg work and comes up with the solution. Jessie is a much bigger help.

It would be great for these two characters to be retooled so they actually contribute something to the narrative.

“Marshmallows and Memories” is the latest adventure in Agatha Frost’s “Peridale Cafe” cozy mystery series. While trying to perfect a cake for an upcoming wedding, Julia is drawn into an unexpected murder mystery. Jessie and Barker are also involved in trying to solve it. For the first time, we see things from not only Julia’s perspective, but from Jessie’s as well. We learn a lot about her because of that. I enjoyed the change of perspective and the growth in Jessie’s character. It’ll be interesting to see her character development going forward. Highly recommend this book.

I cannot get enough of this series. I love all the characters and the stories don't drift off into the unbelievably absurd as some books I've read do. I can't wait for the next in the series. It's lucky I don't work Mondays as it's gone 1am and I couldn't stop until I'd finished the book.
