Agatha lives in the North West English county of Lancashire with her two cuddly beagles and one cat.

When Agatha isn’t writing, she loves reading head-scratching mysteries and thrillers, coffee, baking, and exploring her local countryside on long dog walks.

Barker Brown has spent several years on the waitlist for an allotment. When the former detective inspector finally receives the keys to his little dirt patch of heaven, he promptly finds a dead body buried among the carrots. When it is determined that the young man was murdered, Barker and his family take up the case.

Barker’s wife, baker extraordinaire and unofficial detective Julia, along with their daughter Jessie, and Julia’s irascible grandma Dot, immediately begin to study the clues.

In Carrot Cake and Concern, the 26th book in the Peridale Café Cozy series, we see the action from the points of view of not only our heroine Julia, but Barker and Jessie as well. The action moved faster than I remembered in prior books. This is a great edition to a cozy, heartwarming, and entertaining series by Agatha Frost.

I have read all of the Peridale mysteries. Very nice and comfortable to revisit the characters and locations. The story line was well written; however, the use of British terminology and slang was about 90% more than the other Peridale stories. It made me wonder whether Agatha wrote the book or just provided the outline. Im looking forward to the next book. I've enjoyed watching the character development from Book 1 to this current book (26) but each book is good as a "stand alone" book as well.

A body is found in Barker's new allotment, who is he and how did he get there? This is the start of a fast moving story that pits Julia, Jessie and Barker into a mess of suspects, lies and the uber rich. Who done it has never been so entertaining.

I love this series, I really do. I read all of them up to book 24 a while ago and waited till the next one came out. Now I have gone back to start reading the new ones and book 25 and this book 26 I just couldn't stay connected to the story for some reason. I don't know why. I read them all the way through but it jumps around and I just can't focus on them like I used to and I really want to because I love these books. I am taking a break reading other books before I go on to book 27 and I hope that I can reconnect with this author because I always enjoyed her books. Other than that the plot and twists are there and it keeps you guessing.

I have read and enjoyed all of the Peridale books, so when this one was published I was eager to read it.
Something is off about this story, however.
Another reviewer stated the same thing I thought: that somebody else wrote this book.
It simply did not have the same tone or rhythm as the others in the series.
There were strange inclusions that really weren't germane to the story, like the frequent references to Romeo and Juliet.
Some things were just downright confusing, as if the author had a certain train of thought but didn't let the reader in on it.
For example, part of the setting for the story was in what I'm assuming is a gated community of luxury homes. It took me quite awhile to figure that out though because the references to it were vague: 'behind the brick wall' 'the long drive' 'the mysteriously keyed gates'.
Then the parts that included Julia's sister, Sue, were very strange. Her behavior was off, she was having problems with her job, was involved with some group that had been compromised by another character maybe.
It wasn't a bad book, per se, but it was odd.
I guess we'll see how the next one is.
Hopefully it's more cohesive and closer to the other Peridale books.

I enjoyed this one more as the story had more twists and it was only towards the very end you really tuned into the who. Changes happening as well with the characters so not they are not too set in their ways. Why can't I get hold of the new one; banana bread and betrayal on kindle??
