Peri in Progress Kindle Edition

4.2 out of 5 stars 57 ratings

You know what they say about best-laid plans…

After a disastrous thirty-first birthday party where she gets stood-up by a man she isn’t supposed to be dating, Peri McKenna decides it’s time to change what hasn’t been working—which is pretty much everything. Her love life is going nowhere fast, she’s bored to tears by a job that makes her the office pariah, and the lifelong junk food addiction that used to be somewhat quirky is now positively problematic. To top it all off, her newly-purchased home is falling apart and wishful thinking hasn’t done much to fix the leaky roof.

It’s time be an adult now that she’s officially ‘thirty-something.’
But when the first step of Peri’s self-improvement plan backfires, she starts to wonder if change might be overrated.

Enter Milo Preston, an up-and-coming chef who’s in town to take over a local restaurant. When Peri and Milo begin working together, she finds it hard to ignore his easy charm and captivating emerald-green eyes. Since Milo is her best friend’s estranged brother, Peri has to keep reminding herself that he is completely off-limits. As they grow closer, Milo introduces Peri to new foods, the joy (and pain) of jogging, and makes her think her luck might finally be turning.

But when the past catches up with them, Peri finds herself back at square one. Will she be able to sort herself out—or will the roof cave in on her once and for all?

I started “Peri in Progress” in late 2015, and while this book is a quick-moving one, the times in my busy schedule I found time to pick it up–even for just a chapter or two–it was very enjoyable! Thankfully, I finished it, making it my first completed read this year, (“Peri in Progress” will definitely be on my favorite reads of 2016!).

Right away, I fell in love with Peri! She knows she’s got issues–her childhood is falling apart, she’s a little overweight, and her relationship isn’t what she’d like it to be–but I admired her for wanting to change the negative things in her life. Having a her friend by her side to help make these changes–one who was only there to help, not sabotage–was a major plus, and I loved how they interacted. As for her job, being asked to take some time off my well-paying job to work at a restaurant that is struggling, I wouldn’t do it, being tempted to stay home in bed the entire time, but Peri accepted the challenge. It was rewarding to see how Peri overcame learning something that was not ordinary to her–including being around a handsome man like Milo, who introduces her to running.

Near the end, I was holding my breath (sorry, no spoilers), but I was cheering for Peri all the way, and loved how it ended.

As one who’s read all of Cat’s books, her writing gets better and better, making me more of a fan of hers, each book she releases. If you’re wanting a quick, fun, delightful read, I recommend this brilliantly-written page-turner!

I give “Peri in Progress” 5 stars!

Another lovely offering of light-hearted escapism from Ms. Lavoie.

Peri attracts our immediate, heartfelt sympathy for her initial work humiliation, and her subsequent journey is a pleasure to follow. The walk-on part for Zoe from Lavoie's second novel added a nice touch. And I did enjoy the theme of life being a work in progress, instead of something we conquer outright.

Looking forward to the next book from this author.

Author Cat Lavoie has done it again and when I say "it" I mean she wrote a heartfelt, humorous, and difficult to put down chick lit novel. Like Roxy and Zoey before her, main character Peri is a protagonist ripe for character development and develop she does - from her taste in food (and men), finding her passion in career (and men), and learning to stand up for herself. The road was not without bumps, but I love a book packed with conflict. Another thing in common with all of the author's books is a moment when the main character humiliates herself to the point where, as the reader, my stomach aches in sympathy and my heart pounds wondering how she will pick herself up again. her characters feel real - like girls I would be friends with - and as my friends, I root for them to find their happily ever after. I truly loved this book and the author is on my "auto-read" list.

Not one I'll re-read, but it was OK. Not a lot of chemistry between the leads, but the storyline was decent. The writing was good as well.

Cat Lavoie had my attention from the very first page. Again! I have read all her books and I can definitively tell you that each one was an absolute pleasure to read. In Ms. Lavoie's latest novel, we meet Peri on what should be a happy occasion -- her birthday. However, the night takes her to the darkest of places since her life is nowhere near where she would like it to be. In the cold light of day, she takes a look at her crumbling house, uncertain career, addiction to junk food and penchant for choosing the wrong men and decides to make some much-needed changes. Her journey of self-improvement takes her to some truly hilarious, heart-warming and downright steamy places, which Ms. Lavoie handles with great skill. I was so enthralled with Peri's adventures that I read this book in one day -- I literally couldn't put it down.

This is a fun, fast read by Ms. Lavoie.

We meet Peri McKenna on her thirty first birthday, and though she survived turning thirty, is barely surviving turning thirty-one. As a result of a rather underwhelming year in her life, Peri decides it is time for epic changes. EPIC. As she sets the changes in motion she soon discovers the fall-out of some of her decisions. With no choice but to proceed, Peri continues to sweep the cobwebs out of her life, and for that I truly loved her. She doesn't question her decision to make major, she works her way through her pain and her enormous list.

Just past halfway I thought, "All the pieces are in place... something's gonna happen." And that something is spectacular. Ms. Lavoie delivers an absolutely charming book that one can completely disappear into. It's the kind of book you keep on your shelf, so that you can pull it out and read it over and over. A definite must read.

Cat Lavoie has become that author that I always automatically buy her book upon release, because I know it's going to be great. Peri in Progress delivered! It was warm, fun, engaging and the cast of characters were charming and you can't help but root for all of them. I had a serious book crush with the hero of the book, Milo, and I enjoyed watching the romance between he and Peri bloom. I thought Cat did a great job of highlighting the not so great truths about restaurant life, but also some of the reasons why so many people end up loving hospitality. Overall, another win by Cat Lavoie! Looking forward to the next read!

It's only January, but I'm predicting that 'Peri in Progress' is going to be one of my favorite books of the year. Author Cat Lavoie rather masterfully combined my three favorite genres (women's fiction, chick lit, and romance) into one story. The supporting cast of characters was charming, it was easy to like Peri and want to cheer her on, and the ending came just too darn soon. This is an all-around lovely book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely fun chick lit

I really enjoyed Peri in Progress; it was fun, fast-paced and romantic with plenty of humour, too. I've really enjoyed all of Cat Lavoie's books - a great chick-lit writer.

4.0 out of 5 stars I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Peri is a very relatable heroine (not only because of her homeownership experiences I understand all too well :-p). What I really like about her journey is that she indeed makes progress throughout the story, and even if her life doesn't quite turn out how she envisioned it in the beginning, I feel it's truly a happy ending for this story.

Milo is not a perfect romance hero, and I love him all the more for it.

Elsa is a terrific best friend, even if she's dealing with her own issues, and everyone should have someone like her in their corner.

This was the first book I have read by Cat Lavoie, but I already have two more on my Stack of Unread Books (I'm looking at you, Matilda and Zoey!).

5.0 out of 5 stars Peri in Progress--Wish I Could Give it Ten Stars
Reviewed in Canada on January 27, 2016
"Peri in Progress" opens with heroine Peri's disastrous 31st birthday, and carries the reader through a journey of hilarious and often touching self-discoveries as earthy, honest Peri does her best to clean up her life. Parts were so funny, I literally burst out laughing. It was the *timing* of the lines: "When I woke up the next morning, a chocolate bar wrapper was stuck to the side of my face. Why don't I remember eating this?" that cracked me up -- merely including an excerpt, here, doesn't do it justice.

This book transcends the romance genre, because in the end, it would have been a triumph even if Peri hadn't landed her man. Her best friend's dysfunctional family and their dramas, the new friends she makes, the old rat of a boyfriend she shakes free of and the new dream guy--I fell in love with all of them. (Particularly the bit where she dumps the old rat.) The call center, the restaurant--all scenarios I could relate to (and have lived). If you want to cheer yourself up, read this book!

I wish I could give this book ten stars, because I would.
