“The mortality rate is one hundred per cent. No one survives…”
In the near future, with the world falling apart, Bill Reddings is forced to do whatever it takes to survive as his life is ripped apart and society crumbles around him.A new strain of a deadly plague appears in London, spreading like wildfire and infecting the entire nation. Martial law is declared, as quarantine and disposal of contaminated corpses become top priority.
As the disease continues to expand exponentially, bodies begin to mount up. Rumours of a vaccination being withheld circulate amongst the population, riots ensue and towns and cities are plunged into chaos. As quarantine locks down the entire United Kingdom, the watchful eyes of the United Government’s Marine Corps maintain an anxious vigil on the island.
The few left alive face slaughter at the hands of fellow survivors or an agonising death by infection: either way, the island will be their tomb.In a world that has fallen to a vile and deadly scourge, only a handful stand strong, pushing back against overwhelming odds, struggling to survive the pestilence that has descended on where they once called home.
Pestilence Reigns is the self-contained first book in the Black Undeath series, chronicling the fall and rise of a deadly plague destined to forever change the lives of the people it has snared with its tainted fingers.

Ben Black is the author of the Black Undeath series, featuring Pestilence Reigns, an epic tale following the undead rising in Britain and War Ravages, detailing the the continuing spread of the plague as it threatens global infection. He is also the author of Arachnocide, a sci-fi tale of space-faring colonists and unstoppable alien spiders. Both books are the first in a series, and mark the beginning of just some of the post-apocalyptic and science fiction tales to come. Each book is rich with gruesome body-shock and horror elements that he incorporates to all his work, something also evident in the short, Dying Memory. This short tale ties in with Black Undeath series and gives just a taste of the crumbling world it’s set in without revealing too much of the main story.

Living in the North East of England, Ben Black's passions in life include horror, science fiction and fantasy in all different media: movies, books, comics and computer games. He lives with his wife and daughter, both of whom are supportive of his eccentricities, if not fully understanding of the worlds in which he lives and works.

Also a bass player and lyricist in a band, Ben tries to keep the dark and visceral content running through his music, too, though his primary creative outlet is his writing.

Sate your thirst for the undead (or giant mutant spiders in space) with his work.

What an incredible story! It really gets the wheels turning in your brain. I could see this becoming reality all too easily.
We have a great cast of characters here. Bill, the man who survives the initial outbreak. Al, the marine who is left behind, Angel, the young college student, Garth, the out of shape trucker, Sylvester and Clive, Pam and Tara, rescued from a maniacal would be messiah.
In the span of just over three years soooo much happens to these people. And by the end of the book you feel like you’ve been there with them through it all.
I highly recommend you to take this journey too!

Totally immersed with the characters. It is a harrowing ride - if you need a bunch of happiness to get you through a fictional account of an apocalypse of the zombie, you’re probably not going to find out here. I laughed, I wept, I cringed a lot. Next book, please.

5.0 out of 5 stars A gritty apocalyptic vision
Reviewed in Canada on December 30, 2019
Ben Black wrote a mammoth of a book with an indepth lens of despair, grief, and the chaotic nature of people. The book combines elements of familiar zombie classics with original ideas that make it a solid read for a seasoned reader of zombie-lit. Some of the descriptions of the environs, Rots, and action-scenes were spot on and vivid. Black has a vision in his writing, and it makes it feel like every step is a visceral journey. After completing the book I felt exhausted, not in a bad way, but in empathy for the character's slog through Black's apocalypse. It all was so gritty and real that I felt like I was really EXPERIENCING this book and not just reading it. Dark themes and even darker atmosphere, this book is the closest thing I read to a modern depiction of a Romero classic.

My only qualm is the pace of his writing style. The writing is descriptive but often borders on excess. Black is a good writer, but he can be a fantastic writer if he whittled off some of the fat in his prose and adopted a 'less is more' approach to his writing. One of the reasons why this book was so large was mainly due to overbloated descriptions. Granted, this is a zombie epic at over 600 pages, but nonetheless the descriptions need a bit of trimming.

Ben Black is a superstar in the making. He has a vision all his own and he can only get better from here.

Fantastic debut novel by a very talented writer. Starts off at a fast pace and never slows up. The characters are strong and relatable, drawing you in emotionally leaving you laughing and scared for them, even a few tears along the way. Great book if it’s genre, I have recommended this book to everyone.

Got hooked on the characters straight away. Loved how the story and characters developed throughout. Some shockers along the way which demonstrated how well this was written. Looked forward to bed so I could pick this up again. Can't wait for the next one from Ben Black!

This is a very good book. At over 600 pages you really get your money’s worth for it. The characters are very well fleshed out and this story wouldn’t be out of place for a metaphor describing 2020.
