An enjoyable read!
I initially chose this book because the blurb reminded me of books I’ve really enjoyed in the past, including the Shatter Me series and the Project E.L.E. series. The idea of a “super” teen is very appealing, especially one designed for nefarious purposes who rebels against her makers. The book is set in first person so it’s a fairly simple matter of slipping into the mind of the main character, Ashe. Made in a lab and trained to be an unfeeling killing machine, she revolts and her ‘family’ escapes into the slums of a city known as Luca. Now Ashe might inexperienced with life, but she is a certified badass chimera and responsible for three other lives so she does her best to care for her own in a place where people are starving. The initial “us against the world” vibe is altered when the MC does a terrible deed against those who don’t deserve to suffer and guilt sets in. Once the guilt exists, the rest unfolds. She joins the Phoenix Project, those she wronged, to fight for what is right. Soon it’s a family affair, and, of course, there are a couple boys. The good looking Nick is also part of the Phoenix Project, and he’s got his own grudge against the establishment, while Gabe, her childhood love haunts her every day. It doesn’t take long for everything to go wrong and for Ashe to face a terrible choice: to allow her family to risk themselves to save their new friends, or run and hide, a chance for Ashe and her family to live another day. Of course, no good story would be complete without the main antagonist, the Institute, the very place where Ashe was created and fled with her family into hiding. Once she joins the Phoenix Project, she comes face to face with her oldest nemesis, Adam. Not only is does he seem void of emotions, he is eager to recapture Eve and bring her back to the Institute. The story continues on with action and suspense. There are flares of romance and passion. Soon she has to return to the place that created her to fight the destiny in order to make the choices she believes in. The conclusion, as part of a trilogy, leaves a cliffhanger, but good news, the rest of the The Phoenix Project Trilogy is available now. While there are a few punctuation and sentence flow issues another editing pass would easily fix, overall I found the story to be well-written and a quick, fun adventure. Although there were a few emotional scenes, this book is fast-paced, and I am sure anyone who picks up The Phoenix Project: Book 1: Flight will enjoy the time they spend in Katherine Macdonald’s world.

This. Was. AMAZING! Like a rollercoaster that you don't want to get off. This author has such talent. Action, scifi, romance, a tough heroine, witty banter, and a touch of existential dread. I was practically heartbroken for a character that's already dead before the story starts, and that takes skill
The characters are all diverse without it being thrown in your face.
The pacing was just right, now I usually always lean towards liking faster paced books but I thought this had the perfect balance of slow and fast.
It has the found family trope in it and it's done very well. I LOVE all these characters so much. Ashe is tough and bada** and the witty banter between her and Nick is just so funny. Mi's character is absolutely hilarious and I love his sarcasm. Ben is precious and Abi is interesting, I hope we get to see more of her. I also love that a lot of tropes that are seen with heroines are being turned on their head here. Ashe is by far stronger than her love interest, and she's not shy about her body for example. And her personality isn't dulled by meeting the love interest, nor is she suddenly weak. There's a lot more focus on the action and political drama than the romance, and I prefer that.
Now the ending. That ending, rarely do endings leave me wanting to scream and speechless at the same time. It IS a cliffhanger and while I love cliffhangers when handled well(this one was definitely perfect) I try to avoid books that have them unless the entire series is out because I get impatient. I have a feeling the sequel to this will be worth the wait and I already plan to buy it as soon as it's out.
Now, there is some typos throughout and the formatting was a little off in places. It probably could've used a proofreader or a second one if there was one, but definitely don't let those turn you off from checking this out as the story is amazing and more than makes up for it.
I'm looking forward to book two now!

I read The Phoenix Project book 1: Flight awhile back for the the first and was super excited to hear the books were being revised! This review is for the revised version.

What an amazing cast of characters here - Ashe, Nick, Scarlet, Mi, Abi, Ben, Harris, Julia, Rudy, Pilot... I could go on! One of my favorite things in all of Katherine Macdonald's books is how deep characters are built. We really get the know levels of so many characters and that just added to the depth of the story itself. I really felt a connection to so many characters here - beautifully done.

I'm not going to give a plot synopsis in this review other than to say if you like dystopian NA novels - read this book! It made me fall in love with dystopian books again after having read some ho-hum series in recent years. Amazing characters, detailed settings, and emotional connections galore make this book hard to put down.

The best parts of this book:
Hands down number 1. Mi. You cannot read this book and not love Mi! I'd read 10 books just about Mi he's so lovable. He is the scene stealer every time he appears on the page!
    2. Nick. If ever there was a H to love, Nick is it. Selfless, humorous, brave, confident, and caring - Nick is the real deal. 'd read 9 books about just him. ;)
    3. The plot - well thought out and intricate - you don't know where you're going until you get there.
    4. Ashe and Nick together - I loved watching how Nick brought out emotions in Ashe that she didn't even know she had. He helped her fight the fear it brought out in her - they were a perfect match.

All in all an amazing book and I can't want to read the revised remaining 2 books in the series! Squee!!

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great characters. Worldbuilding is excellent.
Reviewed in Canada on October 2, 2021
The Phoenix Project is a dystopian novel centered around a genetically altered human named Ashe. She and three others escaped from a prison where they were being trained and experimented on. Ashe is tormented by her history and would like nothing better than to get revenge on her captors.

I quite liked the world building and the characters. The writing is strong and I was able to visualize the scenes clearly. Ashe is particularly good, as she has a great mix of humor and determination.

I enjoyed the first half of the novel more than the second half. The second half was good, but focused quite a bit on a budding romance with a rebel named Nick that Ashe rescues early in the novel. The first half felt faster paced to me.

Over-all, The Phoenix Project is a great novel and I recommend giving it a read.

I work full time doing long hours, but I finished this trilogy in a week.

This series had me utterly gripped the whole way through. There's daring raids, near misses and tension galore. But its really (to me) a book about relationships. If you enjoyed Kate's inter-personal tension in Rose and Thorn, you'll love this. In many ways its a book about family and first love, it just happens to have a massive government conspiracy, very well written action sequences and hand grenades in there too.

Also...want characters with disabilities? Want LGBTQ characters? Want characters with drug addictions? They're all here, they're all rounded, engaging characters, but its not a book *about* any of those things. Kate just has a very rich cast in her novels.

I'm also going to chuckle and think of this trilogy every time I play I-Spy from now on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Immensely enjoyable and surprisingly relatable dystopian action!

I enjoyed this book so, so much!

It's very reminiscent of The Hunger Games, which I love, as well as Dark Angel and to a certain extent, The X-Men.

Katherine Macdonald's greatest achievement, though, is her immensely relatable characters. From Ashe, the protagonist, to every member of her 'family' and The Phoenix Project, you get really involved in their stories and believe everything they are feeling.

The story itself is fast-paced, action-packed and marvelously told.

If you want something which deals with virtually every facet of human life, from family to freedom, 'Flight' has it.

Can't wait to read the sequel!

Echoing other reviews here, I found the characters in Kate’s novel to be fantastic and by far my favourite part of the book. They are distinct, well developed and considering they are super humans, very relatable. There is a familiar human element to them despite their genetic prowess. I look forward to Mi’s character development in particular.

The story itself was engaging and filled me questions throughout. I found the pacing of the story spot on, with enough time given to character relationships but also plenty of action.

I don’t normally read any YA but I think you’ve converted me, Kate. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

I couldn't put this book down.

It's gritty, raw, and heartbreaking in places. The characters were beautifully created, with a realness that made them all easy to connect with.
This book is exciting, fast paced, and the descriptions brought the world alive.

Wholly recommend everyone give this a read.
